Description / Table of Contents: Modelling of the Glaciers-Ocean-Atmosphere system by M. Ya. Verbitsky and D. V. Chalikov presents an earth's climate model based on one-dimensional non-steady thermohydrodynamical equations for the atmosphere, ocean, glaciers, and the asthenosphere. The model takes into account the main mechanisms responsible for the formation of global climate, but it is simple enough to allow simulation of climate evolution for a period up to one million years. The present climate is reconstructed, sensitivity of the system to changes in the initial conditions is investigated and evidence for non-uniqueness of climate for the present distribution of the continents is obtained. Climate sensitivity to changes in the isolation is calculated. Oscillations of climate similar to the Pleistocene ice ages are modelled. Climatic conditions for the Late Mesozoic and Late Pleistozoic are estimated. The book is intended for specialists on climate, oceanologists, meteorologists, glaciologists and also for students of appropriate specialities.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Stone glaciers (glaciers) are widespread in many mountain systems of the world. They are formed in conditions of permafrost and deep dissection of the relief. Until now, these periglacial landforms remain extremely poorly studied in all respects, but this is especially true of their internal structure, genesis and evolution. Little attention is paid to them in Russian literature, although they are found in some mountainous regions more often than glaciers. The history of study, distribution, external appearance, internal structure, nature of movement, genesis and evolution of stone glaciers are described in an entertaining form. Their influence on various natural processes in the mountains is considered, considerations are made regarding the relationship of stone glaciers with human economic activity. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, including students and schoolchildren.

Description / Table of Contents: An understanding of the changing relationships within systems is an integral part of the study of a variety of disciplines. The second edition of Dynamic Modeling gives a thorough introduction to modeling by teaching the reader both to build and to use a wide range of models, including those for biological, physical, social and economic systems. In conjunction with the STELLA software provided with the book, the reader has an easy-to-use tool to visualize all types of dynamic systems. Even more examples of theory and applications from the modeling community have been added to the second edition. For example, the authors have expanded their treatment of population cohort models and then applied it to the dynamics of the U.S. population. They have enriched the discussion of positive feedbacks, enlarged the section on genetics, and provided more applications to the study of diseases. The economics section of the book includes models from game theory and market dynamics that result from the combined effects of inventory changes and producer expectations. The set of engineering models of gravity and acceleration also includes examples of mechanical amplifiers, which are illustrated by the workings of a playground swing. With each model discussed, the book emphasizes the need to learn the concepts and tools of the model for the purpose of generating new insights, streamlining the problem-solving process, and fostering creative thinking and modeling in other areas in inquiry as well. In addition to the new topics, many chapters have been revised and updated to make more extensive use of the new model-development features of STELLA. All models and a run-time version of the STELLA software are included with the book on a CD-ROM, which is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Description / Table of Contents: A conference dealing with ‘Early Tertiary volcanism and the opening of the NE Atlantic’ was held at the Geological Society of London, Burlington House, London, on 18 and 19 March 1987. The meeting was supported and promoted by three of the specialist groups of the Society (Volcanic Studies, Marine Studies and Petroleum groups), and carried the endorsement of the Norsk Petroleumsforening. This broad-based support reflects the truly multidisciplinary nature of the meeting, which saw contributions from geophysicists, geochemists, geochronologists, volcanologists, petroleum geologists, structural geologists, petrologists, sedimentologists and biostratigraphers. The conference was attended by over 180 delegates from throughout the N Atlantic borderlands, who enjoyed the presentation of 34 papers and five posters, and contributed to a number of lively and spirited discussion periods. This volume contains 37 papers, four of which appear as extended abstracts, and some in forms very different to that presented at the meeting. For practical reasons some authors have combined manuscripts, some contributions presented at the meeting were not available for inclusion in this publication, and some papers have been included despite not being presented at the meeting. The papers have been grouped into six categories, essentially on the basis of structural and geographic setting, but these categories also serve to emphasize the multidisciplinary approach of the current research. Volcanic and tectonic framework The first group of papers deals with the volcanic and tectonic framework on which the subsequent regional studies are based. These papers deal not only with the regional plate-tectonic setting during the Palaeogene...

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Did Robert Peary and Frederick Cook reach the North Pole? Who are they - falsifiers or deluded? Was Admiral S.O. Makarov wrong? Did Umberto Nobile fly over the North Pole or away from it? Who was the first to reach this symbolic point on a surface ship, dog sleds, hot air balloon, airship, airplane, submarine? The author of the book answers all of these questions far from the spirit of existing encyclopedias, textbooks and periodicals. The reader can learn these and other questions of the history of the centuries-old "race" to the North Pole from this book, in which the motives of Man's aspirations to the top of our planet are revealed step by step in a fascinating and unconventional form.

Description / Table of Contents: Now available in paperback, this wide-ranging account of the life of the tundra provides a fascinating insight into the ways in which animals, plants and climate interact in an inhospitable environment. Although the tundra is not rich in species compared with habitats in the tropics or even in temperate regions, it is an area of great interest to ecologists, botanists and zoologists alike, as an excellent example of nature contending with extreme environmental stress. As a biogeographer and ecologist the author has used his first-hand experience of the Eurasian Sub-Arctic to present an overview of life on the tundra of the Soviet Northlands that has become a classic of ecological literature. The tradition of interdisciplinary studies is very strong among Soviet tundra scientists. The present work, which was the author's first to be translated into English, provides a broad view of the complexities of life in the Soviet Northlands and makes a strong plea for its protection. This important book is a valuable guide to the life of the tundra and will interest all those interested in the conservation of its flora and fauna.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: In November 1969, a group of young specialists from the Arctic and Antarctic State landed on an ice island drifting in the north of the East Siberian Sea. A 35-meter-thick Qsrut was 14 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. It seemed that no force in nature was capable of crushing this giant ice monolith. But something happened that no one could have expected ... All the vicissitudes of the SP-19 expedition were described by its participants in the book "Ice Island Underfoot", published in 1972 by the "Young Guard". The new edition includes original notes preserved in the diaries and archives of the authors and for one reason or another were not included in the first edition. For a wide range of readers.

Description / Table of Contents: The book first shows the results of system oceanologic studies carried out in the Arctic by the Russian scientists with the use of large ships-floating research institutes. Physics, chemistry, biology and geology of the Arctic Ocean are considered in the interrelation based on the samples taken in the same localities at one and the same time and processed in ship-board laboratories. Many kinds of studies were undertaken for the first time (lithology and geochemistry of sea ice and snow, marine aerosols, sea snow, hydrooptics combined with satellite observations, internal waves, organic carbon cycle and its role in climate variability of the environment, ecosystem studies, matter and energy fluxes, etc.). The book is intended for the physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, teachers and all those who are interested in the Arctic problems.

Description / Table of Contents: Professor Frenkel's book on the theory of liquids deals with a wider subject than that of liquids alone. Liquids are in his view much more closely akin to solids than to gases, but have a structure in which the long-range order of the solid has been lost. The book therefore includes a discussion of all types of disorder in solids, of the purely thermal displacements of the atoma, of the motion of interstitial atoms and ions, and of many types of transition from an ordered to a disordered state. The theory of these transitions, which has been developed fully, is discussed at length in this book and forms an introduction to the problems as yet unsolved of the transition to the liquid phase. There are also sections dealing with the specific heats of liquids, diffusion in liquids, and similar subjects.
