Notes: Summary Instead of becoming lower during the day, the serum iron level rises when a person is fasting, and this all the more when this person is active. These facts suggest that some iron may be attached to the reserves (glycogen, fat), since the serum iron diminishes during the formation of these reserves (nourishment) and increases during their utilization (fasting, activity, night), unless the effect of fasting increased by activity be one of stress.

Die Produkte (I) bzw.

Notes: Summary The isomerisation of 5-hydroxy-benz(cd)indoline (I) to 5-keto-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benz(cd)indole (II) over a palladium catalyst has been studied systematically. Besides (II) varying amounts of the dehydrogenation product (III) are formed. This side reaction does not occur when the isomerisation is carried out in a hydrogen atmosphere. The above isomerisation can be reversed by treatment of (II) with acetanhydride and potassium acetate.

Notes: Summary The ATPase activity is inhibited by Colchicin in concentrations of 10−3 m and 10−4 m at a rate of 40 to 20 %, but in no way in the range of 10−7 m and 10−8 m, where Colchicin exerts its typical spindle-blocking action on the mitotic cell division. It is therefore no evidence, that Colchicin acts by influence on the energy yielding ATP-ATPase system, which was proposed to be responsible for the spindle contraction.

Notes: Summary and conclusions Four commercial preparations of vitamin K were evaluated for their fungistatic activities on the following dermatophytes:Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, andTrichophyton Schönleinii. Table 1 lists the maximum nonfungistatic and the minimum fungistatic concentrations of each vitamin K. The fungistatic activities of the vitamins K are higher in the liquid than in the solid medium. VitaminIV was the most active on all the dermatophytes in both, the solid and the liquid medium. The fungistatic activities of the other vitamins K vary, in each medium, according to the dermatophyte. Sodium bisulfite decreases the fungistatic activities of vitamin K. Epidermophyton floccosum was the most sensitive to all the vitamins K used.

Notes: Summary A determination of the ascospore producing potential forHansenula mrakii of several vegetable media, showed celery and tomato media to be much superior to all others tested, and with celery slightly better than tomato medium. The stimulatory effect on ascospore production, at least in the instance of tomato, appears to be due to a neutral substance which is not extractable with ether, is destroyed by heating under pressure in the presence of acid, and which can be removed by norite adsorption at pH 6.8 and by precipitation with silver nitrate or basic lead acetate.

Notes: Summary One hundred thirty-one cultures of anascosporogenous yeasts isolated from the human body late in 1947 were all typical members of the genusCryptococcus when examined in 1947 and early in 1948. No mycelium was produced in repeated tests in corn meal agar scratch plates or in beef peptone gelatin stabs. By 1950, 17 of the 131 cultures had definitely become morphologically identical with members of the genusCandida, showing typical pseudomycelial growth with blastospores sprouting from the mycelium on the above mentioned media. It is concluded that some species ofCandida can be morphological dissociates ofCryptococcus. The status and the varied phylogeny of the genusCandida is discussed.

Notes: Summary Eighty-four samples of Minnesota soils were collected in the spring of the year. All samples yielded yeasts, and a total of 180 cultures were isolated of which 117 were studied taxonomically. Twenty-five cultures were black yeasts. Approximately one-third of the isolates were spore forming yeasts and members of the oxidative and film forming generaHansenula, Pichia, andDebaryomyces, of which a new species (D. mrakii) has been described. Not a single culture ofSaccharomyces was isolated. Perhaps later in the season when fruit was abundant members of this genus would have been present. The greatest number of imperfects belonged to the genusCandida (32 cultures), althoughPullularia (25 cultures),Rhodotorula (20 cultures), andTorulopsis (16 cultures) were well represented. The cultures ofPullularia darkened very slowly if at all, in the asbence of excess sugar. Under these circumstances they were very similar toT. pullulans. A single culture ofTrichisporon cerebriformis was isolated. The culture isolated formed both blastospores and arthrospores.

Notes: Summary The author follows the formation, the resting features and the further development of the peculiar hyphal bodies ofDelacroixia coronata. By the microscopical examination of colonies grown in Couch medium on cover-slips, he distinguishes various schemes of development and septation in the hyphal bodies recorded above and, after having mentioned the uncertainty of some other denominations (azygospores, parthenospores), he states that they are to be considered chlamidospores in the sense ofLangeron.

Notes: Summary The clinical history of a fatal case of acute disseminated Histoplasmosis in a 3-month-old infant is described. A liver biopsy performed ante mortem revealed numerous encapsulated organisms which were identified at H.capsulatum. This suggests the applicability of this technique as a diagnostic tool. An autopsy showed extensive involvement, the organisms being found in the lungs, thymus, mediastinal and retroperitoneal nodes, liver, adrenals, spleen, and kidneys. A portion of emulsified liver was inoculated into Swiss mice andH. capsulatum was recovered from the mouse tissues 4 weeks after inoculation. A study was made of the cultural characteristic of this culture and it conformed to those previously described for other strains. A study of its fermentation properties disclosed no acid or gas production in media containing glucose, sucrose, lactose, maltose, mannose, rhamnose, trehalose, dulcitol, sorbitol, mannitol, and xylose.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary After the subcutaneous injection ofCoccidioides immitis Stiles, twenty rats showed a giant cell, fibroblastic granuloma; no general infection was observed. Treatment with DCA or Artisone did not modify the course and the histological pattern of the infection. On the contrary, in rats treated with Cortisone the infection was more severe, the subcutaneous granuloma showed larger necrotic and essudative foci, no fibroblastic tissue was formed, the fungous growth was conspicuous and visceral lesions were observed. These results are in agreement with the inhibitory effect of Cortisone on the allergic and immune responses and with the catabolic effect of the hormone on protein metabolism.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper, the Author justifies the generic denominationParacoccidioides and theSplendore's speciesbrasiliensis to designate the South-American blastomycosis agent. He states that the speciesbrasiliensis is perfectly valid and does not infringe any item of the international rules of the botanic nomenclature. He shows that the binomialLutziomyces histosporocellularis must be rejected as superfluous and illegitimate.

Notes: Summary 1. The so-called “macroconidia” observed onMicrosporum-infected hairs “in vivo” is an animal cell and not of vegetable origin. 2. The cells described as “macroconidia” in the parasitic stage of the genusMicrosporum are typical cells of Henle's layer of the internal root sheath of the hair. 3. Whether these spurious “macroconidia” can be seen in a preparation or not depends entirely on the mode of epilation. 4. The cells of Henle's layer can be easily differentiated from true macroconidia by a number of criteria, such as refractivity, staining properties, cultural characteristics, comparative measurements and last but not least, they have no connections with any mycelial elements. 5.Sabouraud correctly recognized these spurious “macroconidia” as epithelial cells. 6. One of the basic laws of mycological observation that dermatophytes do not produce any organs of fructification in their parasitic life cycle, remains unchanged.

Notes: Conclusion Our conclusion may be that a symbiosis may come into existence because the absence of antibiotic influences makes it possible and the presence of one or more symbiotic influences makes it necessary. Once a symbiosis has been formed a genotypical adaptation by means of natural selection of spontaneous mutants occurs. Because of this adaptation the association becomes obligatory and an ideal mutualism is reached in which only so many antibiotic influences are active as is necessary to benefit the association as a whole.

Notes: Summary 1. Methane fermentation of Ca-acetate is about as sensitive to phenylhydrazine, hydroxylamine and azide as it is to sulphite (inhibition by 10−2 m 70, 83, 94 and 95 % resp.; by 10−3 m 0, 39, 49 and 31 % resp.). 2. The sensitivity to dimedone is much less, 10−2 m inhibiting 17% only. 3. The process is much more sensitive to cyanide, 5.10−4 m giving already ±90% inhibition. 4. The sensitivity to sulphide is much less, as 5.10−2 m is necessary for complete inhibition, whereas 10−2 m does not inhibit at all. 5. Cultures of methane bacteria on Ca-acetate can be accustomed to 0.15 % formaldehyde which is fermented to CH4 and CO2 in presumably equimolecular proportions. 6. The results are discussed in the light of data on the action of these toxic substances in biological systems in general, with special reference to anaerobic bacteria.

Notes: Summary An epizootic of rabbit pox among laboratory rabbits is described. The animals were probably infected by neurovaccinia used in laboratory experiments. The disease appeared after intracerebral inoculation of cerebrospinal fluid from patients suffering from various disorders of the central nervous system, which indicates, that non-specific stimuli may give rise to a clinical manifestation of a latent infection, evidence of which was obtained experimentally. The virus isolated possessed the pathogenic and immunologic properties of neurovaccinia virus.

Notes: Summary Three strains of tubercle bacteria, two belonging to the human type and one of avian origin, were made resistant to 4-acetylaminobenzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Conteben) by being grown in progressively increasing concentrations of the drug using a Herrold agar medium. It could be shown that within four months the strains may be adapted to grow in the presence of 500μg/ml of thiosemicarbazone, while at the beginning of treatment the bacteria were susceptible to an amount as low as 1μg/ml of the substance. The impression was gained that resistance to streptomycin may be produced more readily than to thiosemicarbazone, and to the latter substance more easily than to P.A.S.

Notes: Summary It has been shown that amongst 19 strains of 16 differentPseudomonas species four formed an appreciable amount of acid on a solid medium containing maltose, whilst six did the same on a solid medium containing lactose. ForPs. calco-acetica it was proved that this species brings about a rapid conversion of lactose into lactobionic acid (yield±85–90%). The same was found to hold forPs. quercitopyrogallica (yield±90 %), which species, moreover, is also able to convert maltose into maltobionic acid (yields varying between 65 and 80%). An investigation of later phases of these cultures showed that the primarily formed bionates slowly disappear. The two species in question are, therefore, able to spring the oxygen bridge between the two constituent parts of the bionic acids, and this makes it very likely that they are neither entirely devoid of the ability to split the disaccharides into the constituent hexoses.

Notes: Summary The influence of the trace metals Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Mo — known to be essential for the growth of the mouldAspergillus niger van Tieghem — upon the fungitoxicity of tetramethylthiuram disulphide (t.m.t.d.) and of 8-hydroxyquinoline was investigated using the same mould as the test organism. It was found that none of the metals upon addition to the medium reversed the toxicity of t.m.t.d. to any perceptible degree neither when the mould was cultivated in a state of being very sensitive to t.m.t.d. (on a synthetic medium) nor when it was grown in a state of being about a 100 times more resistant to the agent (on a malt agar medium). Addition of Zn, Cu, Mn and Mo did not counteract the antifungal activity of 8-hydroxyquinoline. Fe effected a reverse only when the mould was cultivated in a resistant state, whereas this metal had no influence upon the toxicity of 8-hydroxyquinoline when the mould was cultivated in a sensitive state. The iron salt of 8-hydroxyquinoline showed about the same antifungal activity as free 8-hydroxyquinoline only when the test mould was cultivated under conditions favouring a high sensitivity. Most phenomena encountered in the reversal of toxic action of antimicrobial agents by addition of heavy metal ions are satisfactorily explained by the „availability“ factor. It was concluded that the antifungal activity of tetramethylthiuram disulphide and 8-hydroxyquinoline cannot be attributed to their capability of precipitating essential heavy metals.

Notes: Summary Methionine, xanthine and thymine replace para-aminobenzoic acid as a growth factor for the para-aminobenzoic-lessE.coli mutant strain 273. The same substances were able to antagonize non competitively the bacteriostatical activity of 2000 mg/l sulfanilamide completely. It was further shown that the observed differences in sensitivity of the reaction chains leading to methionine, xanthine and thymine are not due to a difference in sensitivity to sulfanilamide but a difference in sensitivity to para-aminobenzoic acid. This seems to indicate that there exists only one reaction which is inhibited by sulfanilamide.

Notes: Summary 1. A case of fermentation in sugared fruits (equilibrium relative humidity about 0.82) was studied. 2. The causative yeast wasSaccharomyces Rouxii. Concentrations up to 70 wt% of levulose in 0.5% yeast extract solution did not prevent its fermenting. The strains showed visible growth on 65 wt% levulose-yeast extract agar and grew weakly and without fermentation in 30 wt% sucrose-yeast extract solutions. 3. The yeast was also isolated from beet molasses, and from bees found in the factory where the fruit was made.

Notes: Summary 1. The genusGnomonina was described by v.Höhnel (1918) to accomodateSphaeria alnea Fr., the type of the genusLaestadia Auersw. (non Kunth); he described it as a member of theGnomoniaceae with completely closed fruiting-bodies. But when ripe these fructifications, which are buried in the substratum, lying parallel to the surface, develop an apparently lateral perithecial beak which erupts to the exterior. Ripe ascospores are two-celled. The fungus is, thus, a typical member of the genusPlagiostoma Fuck, and must be namedP. alnea (Fr.) comb. nov. 2. Sphaeria pustula Pers.=Hypospila Karst.=Chalcosphaeria v. Höhn. is distinguished by the presence of a hyaline, apparently crystalline envelope, but agrees in all other structural details with the genusPlagiostoma and is identical withP. subspecta Fuck. It must be namedP. pustula (Pers.) comb. nov. 3. Hypospila Rehmii Sacc. is also aPlagiostoma. 4. A general description of the familyGnomoniaceae and a key of the genera is given; the nomenclature of the genera and their type-species is briefly discussed.

Notes: Summary 1. One phase of morphogenesis (production of resistant sporangia) in the life cycle ofBlastocladiella has been investigated experimentally in some detail, and the underlying biochemical transformations have, in part, been elucidated. Conversely, morphogenesis has been made to serve as a tool in physiological studies. Elevated concentrations of CO2 sources induce R.S. spores to develop directly into resistant-sporangial plants instead of gametophytes. The phenomenon, furthermore, is dependent upon additional factors found in a non-standardized peptone, but not in vitamin-free casein hydrolysate. Such factors can be effectively replaced by certain Krebs-cycle intermediates (e.g.a-ketoglutarate and citrate) and oxidative-decarboxylation inhibitors or carbonyl reagents (e.g. arsenite and semicarbazide). Biotin completely eliminates the effect ofa-ketoglutarate in inducing the formation of R.S. plants; this offers strong indirect evidence for the role of biotin in the oxidative decarboxylation ofa-ketoglutarate. Blastocladiella is heterotrophic for thiamine. The remarkable fact that it can be replaced by a combination of bicarbonate, acetate, and pantothenate is suggestive of the substitution of a Coenzyme A-dependent acetylation reaction for the decarboxylation of pyruvate during growth. It has been concluded that retardation of the oxidative decarboxylation ofa-ketoglutarate, and simultaneous accumulation of its precursors back to the citrate stage, is directly or indirectly related to the formation of R.S. The strong lactate production, the thiamine heterotrophy, the supposedly weak C2-forming mechanism associated with it, the probably-functional Wood-Werkman reaction, and the by-passing of the B1-deficiency with a source of CO2, acetate, and pantothenate are further discussed with relation to the biosynthetic mechanism underlying the morphogenetic pattern. 2. The germination of resistant sporangia, a very precise mechanism, is separable into two distinct phases; one, a period (e.g. 60 min. atca. 20° C.) terminating with cracking of the thick pitted wall, and the other, a subsequent period which leads to the final discharge of spores. Relatively low concentrations of anions, as well as different temperatures, exert a pronounced differential influence on the two processes.

Notes: Summary The effect of ultrasonics (800,000 c/s, 0.3–2.4 W/cm2; beam of 1 mm diameter applied directly on the apex of the cochlea) on the electrical response of the inner ear was investigated in guinea pigs. The results obtained in ten experiments indicate, that ultrasonics cause a selective diminuation of the cochlear microphonics and a consequent secondary depression of the action potentials.

Notes: Summary A simple method for the determination of histamine—using inverted pieces of isolated guinea pig intestine—is described, whereby amounts as small as 0,2 ml of solution may be employed. The difference between this and other methods is that the solution is merely filled into the lumen of the inverted intestine instead of—as is generally done—bringing the solution into contact with it from the exterior. Since the response and sensitivity of the intestine towards histamine are not impaired by this technique, the determination of histamine in much smaller amounts of fluids than hitherto possible is now assured.

Notes: Summary 5,5-Dimethyldehydroresorcinol-dimethylcarbamate although only slightly toxic to warm blooded animals, has remarkable insecticidal properties both on ingestion and on contact. In higher concentrations the compound is effective against a wide range of insects, in very low dosages it only kills aphids. In dilutions of 0.01–0.02% the substance is efficient against numerous important aphids and does not affect the predators and parasites, e.g. the useful insects of the orchard fauna; it has, therefore a definite selective action. The substance is translocated through the plant in the organic and inorganic sapstream and thus has a certain “systemic effect”. It acts mainly on the central nervous system of the insects and produces tetanus-like muscular convulsions which occur at short but regular intervals.

Notes: Summary The behaviour ofBlattella germanica in the maze is subject to great variations according to different wavelengths, of the same energy. No learning in red, green, and yellow; significant learning in blue. From the red to the blue, augmentation of errors may be observed; learning varies as the sum of the errors. White light gives a particular phenomenon: with the same energy as for blue light, the sum of errors is less, and also the run time. Elytra play a role in stimulus reception; the sum of the errors is greater after their varnishing. Ocellae play the most prominent role; learning is abolished after their varnishing. They seem to apprehend light intensity. The role of general excitement and particular stimuli is discussed; if the general excitement is low (varnishing of the elytra) and stimuli are high, there are many errors, and the run time is very long; however, learning may be observed; when the stimuli are at a low level (varnishing of the ocellæ) and general excitement is normal, there are few errors, but no learning.Blattella do not enter their feeding box after varnishing of the eyes and ocellæ; their motivation, consequently, is greatly disturbed, and perhaps learning is impossible without this motivation. Learning establishes an equilibrium between general excitement level and stimuli to the ocellæ.

Notes: Summary After cutting off the tail-tips ofTriton alpestris larvae, the nuclei of the surviving tail-tips, placed in isotonic solution (Holtfreter), become considerably enlarged. This enlargement is approximatively the same after 20 minutes and 16 hours and does not appear after 25 minutes if one adds to the Holtfreter solution 0.5 volume % ether. The similarity of this phenomenon to narcosis-effects of histamin-experiments is pointed out.
