Description / Table of Contents: This volume examines the processes responsible for sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments, and how such modern studies can be used as analogues in the interpretation of ancient glacimarine sequences. Sediments released from glaciers grounded in tidewater, floating ice shelves, ice tongues, icebergs and sea ice form complex sequences governed by glaciological, oceanographic, sedimentary and biogenic controls. Ten per cent of the world’s oceans and epicontinental seas contain such active glacimarine environments, but during Cenozoic glacial periods this area was doubled. This book will, therefore, be of relevance to all scientists concerned with high and middle latitude marine environments. The early chapters are concerned largely with processes of sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments; examples are drawn from Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard and Antarctica. Studies of ancient sequences, both Cenzoic and pre-Cenozoic, from the Barents Sea, Greenland, Sweden, Alaska and the northwest European continental shelf, form the latter part of the book.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: Marine biota show latitudinal gradients in distribution, composition and diversity. Most studies of latitudinal gradients in organism biology and ecology are based on between-species comparisons and hence are hampered by taxon-related variability in the parameters under investigation. To reduce taxonomic noise and to minimize the risk of otherwise misleading generalisations I used species from one single bivalve family (Pectinidae, scallops.Ecological (e.g. age, growth, productivity) and physiological (standard metabolic rate, enzyme kinetics) parameters of three scallop species (Adamussium colbecki, Aequipecten opercularis and Zygochlamys patagonica) were measured and combined with data extracted from literature. The resulting database comprised 226 studies of 26 species living over a temperature range of 28°C. The overall growth performance of scallops increases with decreasing latitude, i.e. it is strongly coupled to annual solar energy input but weakly coupled to average annual water temperature. Mean annual water temperatures and annual solar energy input by themselves can explain only a small part of the variability observed in growth performance. An analysis of 82 published studies on standard metabolism provided no evidence for metabolic cold adaptation at the organism level. In contrast, mitochondrial proliferation caused a rise in oxygen demand in the Antarctic scallop indicating that metabolic cold adaptation does occur on the cellular level. It must be assumed that energy savings occur to counterbalance the cost of cellular MCA. At which organisational level such savings may occur remains unanswered so far.The present study indicates that many scallop species have developed strong life-history adaptations to the particular conditions of both alimentation and temperature they experience. In addition, the established pectinid database (ScallopBASE) provides a good basis for the evaluation of evolutionary adaptations and constraints.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: The book of the historian-journalist S.F. Vinogradov is dedicated to the famous Soviet polar explorer G.A.Ushakov. The creation of the first settlement on Wrangel Island and a three-year winter stay there would have been enough for Ushakov's name to remain forever in the history of Arctic exploration. But he was also the organizer of the Severozemelskaya expedition, which in a short time in the most difficult conditions explored and mapped the vast archipelago - Severnaya Zemlya. Ushakov participated in the rescue of the Chelyuskinites and in the first high-latitude expedition on the icebreaker 'Sadko'. He also did a lot to turn the Northern Sea Route into a functioning waterway. The book is intended for the general reader.

Description / Table of Contents: The spectrum of physical and chemical dating methods now covers the entire range of earth history. But there are so many methods that it is becoming increasingly difficult to select those that are appropriate for solving a specific problem. The objective of this book is to cover the whole spectrum of methods and to give examples of their applications. Thus it is addressed to everybody interested in the application of physical and chemical dating methods to the geosciences and archeology. It is especially valuable as a concise, but comprehensive reference for students and practitioners.

Description / Table of Contents: Iwan Papnin.

Description / Table of Contents: To understand the global oceanic carbon budget and related climate change, exact measurements of organic carbon flux in all oceans environments, especially the continental margins, are crucial. In fact, data have been available for some time on organic carbon sources, pathways, and burial for most of the world's oceans, with the notable exception of the Arctic. With this book, the editors remedy this gap in knowledge, presenting an overview of organic-carbon sources, pathways, and burial of the circum-Arctic continental margin and deep-sea areas. Data from each Arctic shelf and basin are collates, presented in common and parallel formats, and related to the global carbon cycle. The book is suitable for lecturers, graduate students as well as scientists interested in the organic-carbon-cycle and Arctic Ocean (paleo-)environment.

Description / Table of Contents: This comprehensive text and reference work on numerical weather prediction covers for the first time, not only methods for numerical modeling, but also the important related areas of data assimilation and predictability. It incorporates all aspects of environmental computer modeling including an historical overview of the subject, equations of motion and their approximations, a modern and clear description of numerical methods, and the determination of initial conditions using weather observations (an important new science known as data assimilation). Finally, this book provides a clear discussion of the problems of predictability and chaos in dynamical systems and how they can be applied to atmospheric and oceanic systems. Professors and students in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, hydrology and environmental science will find much to interest them in this book, which can also form the basis of one or more graduate-level courses.

Description / Table of Contents: Over the forty years since the invention of the laser, optical and electronic technology has made great strides, enabling the practical use of lidar in many fields. As lidar technology moves from being an object of research to providing data for other types of researchers to use, it becomes increasingly important to have a resource that explains the topic simply, yet thoroughly. Intended as a handbook for researchers, graduate students, and lidar users, Elastic lidar : theory, practice, and analysis methods bridges a twenty-year gap in the lidar literature and brings its subject into the twenty-first century. Focusing on elastic lidars, the most common type of lidars in use today, the authors, both researchers in the field, provide a comprehensive discussion of practical elastic lidar methodology and inversion techniques, data analysis methods, and the construction of elastic lidars. The book provides lidar professionals and students alike with clear and simple explanations of how lidars work, data inversion techniques, construction of elastic lidars, how to extract information from the data lidars provide. Based on their own professional experience, the authors provide readers with a straightforward explanation of what lidar technology can and cannot do with the methods currently available, while providing alternate viewpoints so that readers can draw their own conclusions.

Description / Table of Contents: The book by M. S. Krass and V. G. Merzlikin "The Radiative Thermophysics of Snow and Ice"- the new point of view with usage of methods of light-scattering media theory is realized as working of theory of radiative thermophysics of snow and ice. The statements of new class of thermophysics problems are presented, snow and ice are supposed as light-scattering media with volume reflection and absorption. For the first time this method have helped to explain some noted effects of metamorphic evolution in upper active layer of snow-ice medium and to correct lows of their mass-energy exchange. Optical and physical models for different kinds of snow and ice were studied. The models take into account snow and ice-atmosphere interaction by means of convective heat transfer, solar flux and long-wavelength reradiation, and also phase transitions in medium and at boundaries. The model realizations of various native cases of forming heat regime within snow-ice covers are considered. For all that the way of practical use of theoretical results is shown. The range of the problems makes the book to be interesting for experts in glaciology and planetology, physicists, mathematicians, geographers, climatologists.
