Beschreibung: Earthquakes have been the cause of the deadliest natural disasters over the past century, with the first decade of the 21st century as one of the most devastating periods. Due to the high number of factors that contribute to earthquake occurrence, their prediction is extremely difficult. At the moment, large efforts are being lavished by the international community in scientific and economic terms, in studies for the probabilistic short-term and long-term earthquake forecasting and for simulation aspects of the generation process in order to reduce the risk and to mitigate the damage and its impact. The project aims at the implementation of innovative prevention approaches to consistently link prevention measures to preparedness and response needs. To support the decisionmaking, several projects have already been developed, like seismic scenario simulators, vulnerability assessment of buildings, non-structural components, critical assets, lifeline (critical) infrastructures, and others. Despite these many efforts, neither functional interdependencies (propagation effects) nor intervention strategies or priorities have been incorporated as final tools in the support of decisions for riskreduction policies. In this project, tools that are specifically devoted to the identification of priorities have been delivered. First, a new concept of global disruption measures is introduced, with the objective to provide a systematic way to measure earthquake impact in urban areas. Then, a framework is provided where urbanized areas are seen as a complex network where nodal points have roles as sources and sinks, interacting together in an interdependent fashion. Here, each player (urban functions and physical assets) has its unique dependencies and interaction behavior. These properties are then used to identify which nodes are likely to introduce major disruption in the whole urban system, and also which one of them suggests greater risk reduction if intervention takes place.

Beschreibung: We present a time-independent gridded earthquake rate forecast for the European region including Turkey. The spatial component of our model is based on kernel density estimation techniques, which we applied to both past earthquake locations and fault moment release on mapped crustal faults and subduction zone interfaces with assigned slip rates. Our forecast relies on the assumption that the locations of past seismicity is a good guide to future seismicity, and that future large-magnitude events occur more likely in the vicinity of known faults. We show that the optimal weighted sum of the corresponding two spatial densities depends on the magnitude range considered. The kernel bandwidths and density weighting function are optimized using retrospective likelihood-based forecast experiments. We computed earthquake activity rates (a- and b-value) of the truncated Gutenberg–Richter distribution separately for crustal and subduction seismicity based on a maximum likelihood approach that considers the spatial and temporal completeness history of the catalogue. The final annual rate of our forecast is purely driven by the maximum likelihood fit of activity rates to the catalogue data, whereas its spatial component incorporates contributions from both earthquake and fault moment-rate densities. Our model constitutes one branch of the earthquake source model logic tree of the 2013 European seismic hazard model released by the EU-FP7 project ‘Seismic HAzard haRmonization in Europe’ (SHARE) and contributes to the assessment of epistemic uncertainties in earthquake activity rates. We performed retrospective and pseudo-prospective likelihood consistency tests to underline the reliability of our model and SHARE’s area source model (ASM) using the testing algorithms applied in the collaboratory for the study of earthquake predictability (CSEP). We comparatively tested our model’s forecasting skill against the ASM and find a statistically significant better performance for testing periods of 10–20 yr. The testing results suggest that our model is a viable candidate model to serve for long-term forecasting on timescales of years to decades for the European region.

Beschreibung: After the April 6th 2009 MW 6.3 (ML 5.9) L'Aquila earthquake (central Italy), we re-measured more than 100 km of high-precision levelling lines in the epicentral area. The joint inversion of the levelling measurements with InSAR and GPS measurements, allowed us to derive new coseismic and post-seismic slip distributions and to de- scribe, with high resolution details on surface displacements, the activation and the slip distribution of a second- ary fault during the aftershock sequence that struck the Campotosto area (major event MW 5.2). Coseismic slip on the Paganica fault occurred on one main asperity, while the afterslip distribution shows a more complex pattern, occurring on three main patches, including both slips on the shallow portions and on the deeper parts of the rup- ture plane. The comparison between coseismic and post-seismic slip distributions strongly suggests that afterslip was triggered at the edges of the coseismic asperity. The activation of a segment of the Campotosto fault during the aftershock sequence, with a good correlation between the estimated slipping area, moment release and distribution of aftershocks, raises the opportunity to discuss the local seismic hazard following the occurrence of the 2009 L'Aquila mainshock. The Campotosto fault appears capable of generating earthquakes as large as his- torical events in the region (M N 6.5) or as small as the ones associated with the 2009 sequence. In the case that the Campotosto fault is accumulating a significant portion of the current interseismic deformation, the 2009 MW N 5 events will have released only a small amount of the accumulated elastic strain, and then a significant hazard still remains in the area. Continuing geodetic monitoring and a densification of the GPS networks in the region are therefore needed to estimate the tectonic loading across the different recognized active fault systems in this part of the Apennines.

Beschreibung: The Italian seismic catalogues contain information about earhquakes occurred in Italy; nevertheless only for a few of them it was possible to draw isoseismal maps. The aim of this work is to define for the events lacking of these the mean propagation patten of macroseismic effects by means of model derived from the available maps. The Italian territory was divided in 11 zones with similar seismotectonic characteristics. For each of these zones a mean azimuthal propagation model was computed by means of digitized macroseismic maps with epicentral intensity (Io) greater than or equal to VI degree of MERCALLI-CANCANI-SIEBERG scale (M.C.S.) for homologous isoseisms. These models were applied to those events for which it was not possible to draw maps. Italy was subsequently subdivided in elementary cells (0.1 x 0.1 degree) for each of which some parameters were evaluated, using the available isoseisms or the models, such as the number of macroseismic fewlt effects for each intensity degree, the maximum felt intensity and a synthetic index (C) summarizing all the previous effects. Each parameter was included in a map covering the whole territory to obtain more complete information for seismic hazards problems. Finlly the approach was applied to three important cities such as Milan, Bologna and Florence.

Beschreibung: Identification of fungi and the International Code of Nomenclature underpinning this process, rests strongly on the characterisation of morphological structures. Yet, the value of these characters to define species in many groups has become questionable or even superfluous. This has emerged as DNA-based techniques have increasingly revealed cryptic species and species complexes. This problem is vividly illustrated in the present study where 105 isolates of the Botryosphaeriales were recovered from both healthy and diseased woody tissues of native Acacia spp. in Namibia and South Africa. Thirteen phylogenetically distinct groups were identified based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) rDNA PCR-RFLP and translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) sequence data, two loci that are known to be reliable markers to distinguish species in the Botryosphaeriales. Four of these groups could be linked reliably to sequence data for formerly described species, including Botryosphaeria dothidea, Dothiorella dulcispinae, Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae and Spencermartinsia viticola. Nine groups, however, could not be linked to any other species known from culture and for which sequence data are available. These groups are, therefore, described as Aplosporella africana, A. papillata, Botryosphaeria auasmontanum, Dothiorella capri-amissi, Do. oblonga, Lasiodiplodia pyriformis, Spencermartinsia rosulata, Sphaeropsis variabilis and an undescribed Neofusicoccum sp. The species described here could not be reliably compared with the thousands of taxa described in these genera from other hosts and regions, where only morphological data are available. Such comparison would be possible only if all previously described taxa are epitypified, which is not a viable objective for the two families, Botryosphaeriaceae and Aplosporellaceae, in the Botryosphaeriales identified here. The extent of diversity of the Botryosphaeriales revealed in this and other recent studies is expected to reflect that of other undersampled regions and hosts, and illustrates the urgency to find more effective ways to describe species in this, and indeed other, groups of fungi.

Beschreibung: The main purpose of this study is to obtain the damage scenario for residential buildings in the occurrence of a destructive earthquake (M= 7+) in the city area of Catania, Eastern Sicily, and to illustrate the comparative performance of two alternative methods used for this purpose. The methods are representative of two different approaches to estimating the seismic vulnerability of structures, i.e., an empirical approach based on statistical score assignments (widely used in Italy and other countries) and a more recent, mechanical approach that uses displacement limit states associated with well-defined thresholds of structural damage. A special concern for seismic vulnerability in Catania is caused by the fact that earthquake design norms were enforced in its municipal area only since 1981. We emphasise some typical problems encountered in earthquake scenario work, such as the difficulty of assembling a reliable building inventory, and the uncertainties inherent in the vulnerability assessments through different probabilistic assumptions. Different criteria for the representation of damage are applied and discussed. It is shown that the main scenarios obtained by the two methods are in reasonable agreement, provided a suitable percentile level for damage is chosen in the statistical score assignment approach.

Beschreibung: We investigated the seismicity patterns associated with an earthquake recorded in the Aeolian Archipelago on 16, August, 2010, by means of the region-time-length (RTL) algorithm. This earthquake triggered landslides at Lipari; a rock fall on the flanks of the Vulcano, Lipari, and Salina islands, and some damages to the village of Lipari. The RTL algorithm is widely used for investigating precursory seismicity changes before large and moderate earthquakes. We examined both the spatial and temporal characteristics of seismicity changes in the Aeolian Archipelago region before the earthquake. The results obtained reveal 6-7 months of seismic quiescence which started about 15 months before the earthquake. The spatial distribution shows an extensive area characterized by seismic quiescence that suggests a relationship between quiescence and the Aeolian Archipelago regional tectonics.

Beschreibung: Here we use continuous GPS observations to document the geodetic strain accumulation across the South-Eastern Alps (NE Italy). We estimate the interseismic coupling on the intracontinental collision thrust fault and discuss the seismic potential and earthquake recurrence. We invert the GPS velocities using the back slip approach to simultaneously estimate the relative angular velocity and the degree of interseismic coupling on the thrust fault that separates the Eastern Alps and the Venetian-Friulian plain. Comparison between the rigid rotation predicted motion and the shortening observed across the area indicates that the South-Eastern Alpine thrust front absorbs about 70% of the total convergence between the Adria and Eurasia plates. The coupling is computed on a north dipping fault following the continuous external seismogenic thrust front of the South-Eastern Alps. The modeled thrust fault is currently locked from the surface to a depth of ≈10 km. The transition zone between locked and creeping portions of the fault roughly corresponds with the belt of microseismicity parallel and to the north of the mountain front. The estimated moment deficit rate is 1.3 ± 0.4 × 1017 Nm/yr. The comparison between the estimated moment deficit and that released historically by the earthquakes suggests that to account for the moment deficit the following two factors or their combination should be considered: (1) a significant part of the observed interseismic coupling is released aseismically and (2) infrequent “large” events with long return period (〉 1000 years) and with magnitudes larger than the value assigned to the largest historical events (Mw≈ 6.7).

Beschreibung: The Mw 7.1 earthquake of November 12, 1999 severely damaged a 2.5 km long viaduct on a stretch under construction of the Istanbul-Ankara motorway, 18 km W of Bolu. The fault rupture crossed the viaduct with an observed offset close to 1.5 m; the viaduct deck suffered large permanent displacements but did not collapse. Seismic hazard at the site appears to be governed by characteristic earthquakes occurring every few hundred years both on the Düzce fault and on the main stretch of North Anatolian fault (NAF). Smaller active faults near the site also contribute to the hazard. We investigate how a reliable design response spectrum of displacement can be constructed for the viaduct site using both probabilistic and deterministic tools. After checking the applicability of known attenuation relations against recorded data, we illustrate a hazard analysis that incorporates a characteristic earthquake model for the relevant faults, and accounts for statistical directivity effects on the Düzce fault. Constantrisk response spectra up to 3 s are thus obtained for different return periods. Synthetic motions at the site are generated next, using a known source model, in order to explore the features of the displacement response spectrum at vibration periods in the range between 1s and 6 s, in which the dominant response of the viaduct deck, uncoupled from the piers, occurs. A discussion of results follows.

Beschreibung: The May 20, 2012, Emilia Ml 5.9 earthquake was followed by some major aftershocks, well recorded by a large number of temporary stations that were installed to monitor the sequence. These additional recordings allowed us a thorough testing of the performance of the ShakeMap—a procedure designed to provide rapid information on the experienced ground motion. We found that the shakemaps for the May 29, 2012, Ml 5.8 earthquake, obtained using the permanent stations only, underestimate significantly the ground motion computed with the highest station density, especially for PSA at long periods (T=3.0 s). This low-frequency motion is controlled primarily by the surface waves recorded in the Po plain: the observed site effects are likely not accounted properly by the site correction coefficient based on Vs30 as implemented in the ShakeMap procedure. The shakemaps determined during the seismic sequence have been included in an Italian national law that was passed after the 2012 earthquake. According to this law, the factories safety verifications were bound to the comparison between the shakemaps and the design acceleration required by the current national seismic code.We then decide to appraise the impact of the shakemap accuracy on the law provisions. Following the law ecommendations, we have estimated the possible errors resulting from the incomplete evaluation of the ground shaking: our results show that, if the complete dataset were available at the time of the law approval, the number of buildings for which the safety check was required would have been significantly smaller.

Beschreibung: DESCRIPTION OF TASK B The Task B “Probabilistic analysis of macroseismic data to forecast damage scenarios” includes the following seven Actions: Action B.1 Setting-up of aWorking Group on the macroseismic database (INGV); Action B.2 Exploratory analysis of macroseismic fields for their clustering in classes of attenuation decay (CNR-IMATI); Action B.3 Estimation of the probability distribution of the site-intensity Is , given epicentral intensity and distance from epicentre (isotropic case) (CNR-IMATI); Action B.4 Exploratory analysis of observed and synthetic macroseismic fields for their clustering in classes of anisotropic attenuation decay (CNR-IMATI); Action B.5 Estimation of the probability distribution of the site-intensity Is , given epicentral intensity and distance from epicentre (anisotropic case) (CNR-IMATI); Action B.6 Application of scoring rules (CNR-IMATI); Action B.7 Probabilistic analysis of macroseismic data using the logistic model (INGV) This report is basically divided into two parts. The former (Chapter I) deals with the methodological aspects of the Actions B2 - B6; it describes a clustering procedure to select classes of macroseismic fields with similar attenuation trend within a database, it proposes a probability model and an estimation method to evaluate the distribution of the intensity at site in both isotropic and anisotropic cases, and finally it presents three validation criteria by which to compare observed and estimated intensity at sites. The latter part of the report (Chapters II - V) focuses on the results obtained and provides solutions to specific issues arosen in applying the above-mentioned methods to the test areas considered in the project (Mt. Etna (Italy), Portugal and Azores Islands, Alicante-Murcia (Spain), Iceland). In addition to the collection of the data related to the test areas, Action B1 has also dealt with the digitalization in a GIS of isoseismal images drawn from the literature, and related to two historical earthquakes occurred in North Iceland (Chapter V). Action B7 was planned to compare the beta-binomial probability model analyzed in the project with the other probability model (logistic model) for the seismic attenuation given in the literature. The discussions had with the partners during the course of the project led us to prefer the comparison with the deterministic attenuation relationships currently used in the hazard evaluation of the test areas. The results of these comparisons are illustrated in Deliverable B6.1.

Beschreibung: Based on analyses of concatenated internal transcribed spacer regions of the nrDNA operon (ITS), large subunit rDNA (LSU), γ-actin and β-tubulin gene sequences the taxonomy of coniothyrium-like fungi belonging in the family Montagnulaceae, order Pleosporales, was re-assessed. Two new genera are proposed, Alloconiothyrium, to accommodate A. aptrootii sp. nov., and Dendrothyrium for D. longisporum sp. nov. and D. variisporum sp. nov. One new species is described in Paraconiothyrium, viz. Parac. archidendri sp. nov., while two species so far classified in Paraconiothyrium are transferred to Paraphaeosphaeria, viz. Paraph. minitans comb. nov. and Paraph. sporulosa comb. nov. In Paraphaeosphaeria five new species are described based on asexual morphs, viz. Paraph. arecacearum sp. nov., Paraph. neglecta sp. nov., Paraph. sardoa sp. nov., Paraph. verruculosa sp. nov., and Paraph. viridescens sp. nov. Macro- and micromorphological characteristics are fully described.

Beschreibung: The genus Oxalis in southern Africa contains more than 200 species, with the vast bulk of species in the Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR). Recent fieldwork has suggested that many await discovery. Here we investigate the identity of two apparently undescribed Oxalis species from Northern Cape, South Africa, using morphological comparisons with closely related taxa. We provide a preliminary phylogenetic placement using DNA sequence-based analyses of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Both putative new species are distinguished from all known Oxalis species based on macro-morphological traits. Molecular data placed both within a clade consisting of the weedy O. pes-caprae and its close relatives. Oxalis hirsutibulba sp. nov. is characterised by densely hairy bulb tunics, a trait absent from all known members of the O. pes-caprae clade. Oxalis fenestrata sp. nov. is unique in producing apple green succulent stems and leaflets usually with translucent white markings at their incisions. We also provide the first phylogenetic placement of the GCFR narrow endemic O. lasiorrhiza in the O. pes-caprae clade. In conjunction with several other recent discoveries, these two new species and the phylogenetic placement of O. lasiorrhiza show that the O. pes-caprae clade is much more speciose than previously estimated.

Beschreibung: Cortinarius is a species-rich and morphologically challenging genus with a cosmopolitan distribution. Many names have not been used consistently and in some instances the same species has been described two or more times under separate names. This study focuses on subg. Phlegmacium as traditionally defined and includes species from boreal and temperate areas of the northern hemisphere. Our goals for this project were to: i) study type material to determine which species already have been described; ii) stabilize the use of Friesian and other older names by choosing a neo- or epitype; iii) describe new species that were discovered during the process of studying specimens; and iv) establish an accurate ITS barcoding database for Phlegmacium species. A total of 236 types representing 154 species were studied. Of these 114 species are described only once whereas 40 species had one ore more synonyms. Of the names studied only 61 were currently represented in GenBank. Neotypes are proposed for 21 species, and epitypes are designated for three species. In addition, 20 new species are described and six new combinations made. As a consequence ITS barcodes for 175 Cortinarius species are released.

Beschreibung: The Teratosphaeriaceae represents a recently established family that includes numerous saprobic, extremophilic, human opportunistic, and plant pathogenic fungi. Partial DNA sequence data of the 28S rRNA and RPB2 genes strongly support a separation of the Mycosphaerellaceae from the Teratosphaeriaceae, and also provide support for the Extremaceae and Neodevriesiaceae, two novel families including many extremophilic fungi that occur on a diversity of substrates. In addition, a multi-locus DNA sequence dataset was generated (ITS, LSU, Btub, Act, RPB2, EF-1α and Cal) to distinguish taxa in Mycosphaerella and Teratosphaeria associated with leaf disease of Eucalyptus, leading to the introduction of 23 novel genera, five species and 48 new combinations. Species are distinguished based on a polyphasic approach, combining morphological, ecological and phylogenetic species concepts, named here as the Consolidated Species Concept (CSC). From the DNA sequence data generated, we show that each one of the five coding genes tested, reliably identify most of the species present in this dataset (except species of Pseudocercospora). The ITS gene serves as a primary barcode locus as it is easily generated and has the most extensive dataset available, while either Btub, EF-1α or RPB2 provide a useful secondary barcode locus.

Beschreibung: Licania subg. Angelesia is composed of only three species restricted to Southeast Asia and is currently delimited as one of four subgenera of Licania, a species-rich genus of mostly Neotropical taxa. Molecular phylogenetic studies involving Chrysobalanaceae have revealed that Licania is polyphyletic. Here we propose to re-establish Licania subg. Angelesia to generic rank based on molecular and morphological evidence and the three species currently placed in Licania subg. Angelesia (Licania fusicarpa, L. palawanensis and L. splendens) are here re-instated and transferred to Angelesia, as appropriate. Beschreibung: OnApril 2013,alocal scale seismic network, namedOTRIONS, composed of twelve short period (1 Hz) three component seismometers, has been located in the northern part of the Apulia (Southern Italy). At each station, the acquisition systemallows the recording of data in situ and their real time transfer toa seismic laboratory located at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e Geoambientali of Università di Bari "Aldo Moro". The preliminary real time detection and localization of the events is automatically realized by using the SeisComp3 software. In the first two months of data acquisition, the network recorded about one hundred low magnitude (ML〈2) earthquakes. In that follows, wepresent the results of a study aimed at investigating the crustal structure of the Gargano promontory. To this aimweanalyzed the seismic events recorded in the area by the “Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia” (INGV) in the period 2006-2012 and the seismic events recorded by the OTRIONS network in the first two months of acquisition (march and april 2013). From the inversion of P and S travel times of INGV events we inferred a preliminary 3-layer Vp velocity model. The Moho is located at a depth of 27-30 km, in agreement with previous studies. A linearized inversion scheme that uses Velest (Kissling et al., 1994), allowed us to infer a 1D velocity model from the joint inversion of INGV and OTRIONS datasets of P and S travel times. On the whole, the number of earthquakes recorded by the OTRIONS seismic network is higher than 1200 in the period april,2013-march,2014.

Beschreibung: The present work revises the taxonomy of one group of camaenid gastropods from Timor-Leste based on the study of a large number of recently collected ethanol preserved samples as well as historic museum material, including types. By employing comparative analyses of the variation in morphological features (shell, penial anatomy) and the differentiation in mitochondrial DNA sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI) and the 16S rDNA (16S), altogether nineteen species are recognized from Timor-Leste and adjacent areas in the Lesser Sunda and Moluccas, such as West-Timor, Adonara, Leti and Sermata Islands (Indonesia). Four of these species were described previously and have mostly been placed within the genus Chloritis Beck, 1837 in the few historic treatments available. Fifteen species found to be new are formally described. In contrast to the previous taxonomic treatment, placement in the genus parachloritis Ehrmann, 1912 is proposed on grounds of comparative shell morphology. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that all examined species form a monophyletic group, which encompasses diverse shell forms. While most species have shells of the general chloritid type, which are of little taxonomic utility, highly distinct shell morphs (trochoid shells, dwarf forms) have originated within this radiation in independent lineages. Morphological change has occurred in some taxonomic lineages while the bulk of Parachloritis species has maintained an ancestral shell phenotype. This phenotypic stasis is attributed to stabilizing selection in species, which have maintained associations with ancestral habitats, while distinct shell forms have evolved as result of habitat shifts. Consequently, purely shellbased taxonomies are prone to errors due to misjudging the significance of shell characters. While some Parachloritis species uncovered here were found to be narrowly endemic, others had wide distributions that include more than one island. Narrow range endemism was predominantly found in dwarf species and in species that live in high altitudes.

Beschreibung: Species in the genus Gliocephalotrichum (= Leuconectria) (Hypocreales, Nectriaceae) are soilborne fungi, associated with post-harvest fruit spoilage of several important tropical fruit crops. Contemporary taxonomic studies of these fungi have relied on morphology and DNA sequence comparisons of the internal transcribed spacer region of the nuclear rDNA (ITS) and the \xce\xb2-tubulin gene regions. Employing DNA sequence data from four loci (\xce\xb2-tubulin, histone H3, ITS, and translation elongation factor 1-alpha) and morphological comparisons, the taxonomic status of the genus Gliocephalotrichum was re-evaluated. As a result five species are newly described, namely G. humicola (Taiwan, soil), G. mexicanum (rambutan fruit from Mexico), G. nephelii (rambutan fruit from Guatemala), G. queenslandicum (Australia, endophytic isolations) and G. simmonsii (rambutan fruit from Guatemala). Although species of Gliocephalotrichum are generally not regarded as important plant pathogens, their ability to cause postharvest fruit rot could have an impact on fruit export and storage.

Two new genera are proposed, Alloconiothyrium, to accommodate A. aptrootii sp. nov., and Dendrothyrium for D. longisporum sp. nov. and D. variisporum sp. nov. One new species is described in Paraconiothyrium, viz. Parac. archidendri sp. nov., while two species so far classified in Paraconiothyrium are transferred to Paraphaeosphaeria, viz. Paraph. minitans comb. nov. and Paraph. sporulosa comb. nov. In Paraphaeosphaeria five new species are described based on asexual morphs, viz. Paraph. arecacearum sp. nov., Paraph. neglecta sp. nov., Paraph. sardoa sp. nov., Paraph. verruculosa sp. nov., and Paraph. viridescens sp. nov. Macro- and micromorphological characteristics are fully described.

In addition, a multi-locus DNA sequence dataset was generated (ITS, LSU, Btub, Act, RPB2, EF-1\xce\xb1 and Cal) to distinguish taxa in Mycosphaerella and Teratosphaeria associated with leaf disease of Eucalyptus, leading to the introduction of 23 novel genera, \xef\xac\x81ve species and 48 new combinations. Species are distinguished based on a polyphasic approach, combining morphological, ecological and phylogenetic species concepts, named here as the Consolidated Species Concept (CSC). From the DNA sequence data generated, we show that each one of the \xef\xac\x81ve coding genes tested, reliably identify most of the species present in this dataset (except species of Pseudocercospora). The ITS gene serves as a primary barcode locus as it is easily generated and has the most extensive dataset available, while either Btub, EF-1\xce\xb1 or RPB2 provide a useful secondary barcode locus.

Beschreibung: Ustilaginomycotina (Basidiomycota, Fungi) has been reclassi\xef\xac\x81ed recently based on multiple gene sequence analyses. However, the phylogenetic placement of two yeast-like genera Malassezia and Moniliella in the subphylum remains unclear. Phylogenetic analyses using different algorithms based on the sequences of six genes, including the small subunit (18S) ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the large subunit (26S) rDNA D1/D2 domains, the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS 1 and 2) including 5.8S rDNA, the two subunits of RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2) and the translation elongation factor 1-\xce\xb1 (EF1-\xce\xb1), were performed to address their phylogenetic positions. Our analyses indicated that Malassezia and Moniliella represented two deeply rooted lineages within Ustilaginomycotina and have a sister relationship to both Ustilaginomycetes and Exobasidiomycetes. Those clades are described here as new classes, namely Moniliellomycetes with order Moniliellales, family Moniliellaceae, and genus Moniliella; and Malasseziomycetes with order Malasseziales, family Malasseziaceae, and genus Malassezia. Phenotypic differences support this classi\xef\xac\x81cation suggesting widely different life styles among the mainly plant pathogenic Ustilaginomycotina.

Beschreibung: Numerous members of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota produce only poorly differentiated arthroconidial asexual morphs in culture. These arthroconidial fungi are grouped in genera where the asexual-sexual connections and their taxonomic circumscription are poorly known. In the present study we explored the phylogenetic relationships of two of these ascomycetous genera, Arthrographis and Arthropsis. Analysis of D1/D2 sequences of all species of both genera revealed that both are polyphyletic, with species being accommodated in different orders and classes. Because genetic variability was detected among reference strains and fresh isolates resembling the genus Arthrographis, we carried out a detailed phenotypic and phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data of the ITS region, actin and chitin synthase genes. Based on these results, four new species are recognised, namely Arthrographis chlamydospora, A. curvata, A. globosa and A. longispora. Arthrographis chlamydospora is distinguished by its cerebriform colonies, branched conidiophores, cuboid arthroconidia and terminal or intercalary globose to subglobose chlamydospores. Arthrographis curvata produced both sexual and asexual morphs, and is characterised by navicular ascospores and dimorphic conidia, namely cylindrical arthroconidia and curved, cashew-nut-shaped conidia formed laterally on vegetative hyphae. Arthrographis globosa produced membranous colonies, but is mainly characterised by doliiform to globose arthroconidia. Arthrographis longispora also produces membranous colonies, but has poorly differentiated conidiophores and long arthroconidia. Morphological variants are described for A. kalrae and our results also revealed that Eremomyces langeronii and A. kalrae, traditionally considered the sexual and asexual morphs of the same species, are not conspecific.

Beschreibung: Identi\xef\xac\x81cation of fungi and the International Code of Nomenclature underpinning this process, rests strongly on the characterisation of morphological structures. Yet, the value of these characters to de\xef\xac\x81ne species in many groups has become questionable or even superfluous. Thirteen phylogenetically distinct groups were identi\xef\xac\x81ed based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) rDNA PCR-RFLP and translation elongation factor 1-\xce\xb1 (TEF1-\xce\xb1) sequence data, two loci that are known to be reliable markers to distinguish species in the Botryosphaeriales. Such comparison would be possible only if all previously described taxa are epitypi\xef\xac\x81ed, which is not a viable objective for the two families, Botryosphaeriaceae and Aplosporellaceae, in the Botryosphaeriales identi\xef\xac\x81ed here. The extent of diversity of the Botryosphaeriales revealed in this and other recent studies is expected to reflect that of other undersampled regions and hosts, and illustrates the urgency to \xef\xac\x81nd more effective ways to describe species in this, and indeed other, groups of fungi.

Beschreibung: Cortinarius is a species-rich and morphologically challenging genus with a cosmopolitan distribution. Many names have not been used consistently and in some instances the same species has been described two or more times under separate names. This study focuses on subg. Phlegmacium as traditionally de\xef\xac\x81ned and includes species from boreal and temperate areas of the northern hemisphere.

Beschreibung: Eumycetoma is a chronic fungal infection characterised by large subcutaneous masses and the presence of sinuses discharging coloured grains. The causative agents of black-grain eumycetoma mostly belong to the orders Sordariales and Pleosporales. The aim of the present study was to clarify the phylogeny and taxonomy of pleosporalean agents, viz. Madurella grisea, Medicopsis romeroi (syn.: Pyrenochaeta romeroi), Nigrograna mackinnonii (syn. Pyrenochaeta mackinnonii), Leptosphaeria senegalensis, L. tompkinsii, and Pseudochaetosphaeronema larense. A phylogenetic analysis based on \xef\xac\x81ve loci was performed: the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS), large (LSU) and small (SSU) subunit ribosomal RNA, the second largest RNA polymerase subunit (RPB2), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1) gene. In addition, the morphological and physiological characteristics were determined. Three species were well-resolved at the family and genus level. Madurella grisea, L. senegalensis, and L. tompkinsii were found to belong to the family Trematospheriaceae and are reclassi\xef\xac\x81ed as Trematosphaeria grisea comb. nov., Falciformispora senegalensis comb. nov., and F. tompkinsii comb. nov. Medicopsis romeroi and Pseudochaetosphaeronema larense were phylogenetically distant and both names are accepted. The genus Nigrograna is reduced to synonymy of Biatriospora and therefore N. mackinnonii is reclassi\xef\xac\x81ed as B. mackinnonii comb. nov. Mycetoma agents in Pleosporales were phylogenetically quite diverse despite their morphological similarity in the formation of pycnidia, except for the ascosporulating genus Falciformispora (formerly in Leptosphaeria). Most of the species diagnosed from human mycetoma were found to be related to waterborne or marine fungi, suggesting an association of the virulence factors with oligotrophism or halotolerance.

Beschreibung: The Cenozoic bryozoan fauna of Indonesia has been neglected in the past. In this pioneering study, based on new material collected during the two field seasons of the Throughflow project, we describe a total of 51 bryozoan species, comprising 15 cyclostomes and 36 anascan-grade cheilostomes, ranging in age from Early to Late Miocene (late Burdigalian to Messinian), collected from 17 sections located in the vicinities of Samarinda, Bontang and Sangkulirang in East Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Eleven of these species are new: Microeciella nadiae sp. nov., Pseudidmonea johnsoni sp. nov., Cranosina rubeni sp. nov., Parellisina mirellae sp. nov., Vincularia berningi sp. nov., Vincularia semarai sp. nov., Vincularia tjaki sp. nov., Vincularia manchanui sp. nov., Gontarella? sendinoae sp. nov., Canda giorgioi sp. nov. and Canda federicae sp. nov. Ten species show affinities with Recent taxa from the Indo-Pacific. Bryozoans are found mainly encrusting the undersides of platy corals from low- and high-relief build-ups, and coral carpets in mixed carbonate-siliciclastic environments.

Beschreibung: The genus Oxalis in southern Africa contains more than 200 species, with the vast bulk of species in the Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR). Recent \xef\xac\x81eldwork has suggested that many await discovery. We also provide the \xef\xac\x81rst phylogenetic placement of the GCFR narrow endemic O. lasiorrhiza in the O. pes-caprae clade. In conjunction with several other recent discoveries, these two new species and the phylogenetic placement of O. lasiorrhiza show that the O. pes-caprae clade is much more speciose than previously estimated.

Everett are assigned to two relatively large species of potamid freshwater crabs (Brachyura) that are still extant in the area, viz. Isolapotamon bauense Ng, 1987 and I. consobrinum (De Man, 1899). While I. bauense is known to occur naturally in the caves, I. consobrinum is a primarily riverine species. On the basis of the available archaeological evidence, the two species were probably collected for food by early human inhabitants of Sarawak. Beschreibung: Fragility curves (FCs) constitute an emerging tool for the seismic risk assessment of all elements at risk. They express the probability of a structure being damaged beyond a specific damage state for a given seismic input motion parameter, incorporating the most important sources of uncertainties, that is, seismic demand, capacity and definition of damage states. Nevertheless, the implementation of FCs in loss/risk assessments introduces other important sources of uncertainty, related to the usually limited knowledge about the elements at risk (e.g., inventory, typology). In this paper, within a Bayesian framework, it is developed a general methodology to combine into a single model (Bayesian combined model, BCM) the information provided by multiple FC models, weighting them according to their credibility/ applicability, and independent past data. This combination enables to efficiently capture inter-model variability (IMV) and to propagate it into risk/loss assessments, allowing the treatment of a large spectrum of vulnerability-related uncertainties, usually neglected. As case study, FCs for shallow tunnels in alluvial deposits, when subjected to transversal seismic loading, are developed with two conventional procedures, based on a quasi-static numerical approach. Noteworthy, loss/risk assessments resulting from such conventional methods show significant unexpected differences. Conventional fragilities are then combined in a Bayesian framework, in which also probability values are treated as random variables, characterized by their probability density functions. The results show that BCM efficiently projects the whole variability of input models into risk/loss estimations. This demonstrates that BCM is a suitable framework to treat IMV in vulnerability assessments, in a straightforward and explicit manner.

Beschreibung: Geodetic measurements devoted to active tectonics studies are extensively carried out in Italy only since the early 2000s, the maximum effort in deploying the GPS networks in Italy dating back to about 2005, so that the observed deformations represent the instantaneous seismic cycle conditions in every area of the Italian region. If we assume a simple idealized seismic cycle model for earthquake recurrence, we can draw some tracks potentially useful in seismic hazard studies, concerning both the spatial mapping of hazardous areas and the time trend of active fault relaxation. We show how the background strain-rate (SR) estimated from GPS velocities in Italy and the comparison with seismicity have evidenced that larger earthquakes occur with higher probability in areas of lower SR, providing evidence that elastic energy accumulates in areas where faults are locked and SR is lower. In tectonically active areas, such as the Apennine subduction belt, SR lows and the knowledge of active faults can be used to identify areas more prone to release larger amount of energy with respect to adjacent zones characterized by higher SR. We have found and modeled an exponential decrease relationship between SR and the time elapsed since the last largest earthquake for normal and thrust faults in the Italian area and estimated the characteristic times of relaxation by a non-linear inversion showing that thrust events exhibit a characteristic time (~ 990 yr) about 3 times larger, and lower SR, than those with normal fault mechanism. Assuming standard rigidity and viscosity values we are able to infer an average recurrence time of about 600 yr for normal faults and about 2000 yr for thrust faults.

Beschreibung: The perception of risks involves the process of collecting, selecting and interpreting signals about uncertain impacts of events, activities or technologies. In the natural sciences the term risk seems to be clearly defined, it means the probability distribution of adverse effects, but the everyday use of risk has different connotations (Renn, 2008). The two terms, hazards and risks, are often used interchangeably by the public. Knowledge, experience, values, attitudes and feelings all influence the thinking and judgement of people about the seriousness and acceptability of risks. Within the social sciences however the terminology of ‘risk perception’ has become the conventional standard (Slovic, 1987). The mental models and other psychological mechanisms which people use to judge risks (such as cognitive heuristics and risk images) are internalized through social and cultural learning and constantly moderated (reinforced, modified, amplified or attenuated) by media reports, peer influences and other communication processes (Morgan et al., 2001). Yet, a theory of risk perception that offers an integrative, as well as empirically valid, approach to understanding and explaining risk perception is still missing”. To understand the perception of risk is necessary to consider several areas: social, psychological, cultural, and their interactions. Among the various research in an international context on the perception of natural hazards, it seemed promising the approach with the method of semantic differential (Osgood, C.E., Suci, G., & Tannenbaum, P. 1957, The measurement of meaning. Urbana, IL: University of Illinois Press). The test on seismic risk perception has been constructed by the method of the semantic differential. To compare opposite adjectives or terms has been used a Likert’s scale to seven point. The test consists of an informative part and six sections respectively dedicated to: hazard; vulnerability (home and workplace); exposed value (with reference to population and territory); seismic risk in general; risk information and their sources; comparison between seismic risk and other natural hazards. Informative data include: Region, Province, Municipality of residence, Data compilation, Age, Sex, Place of Birth, Nationality, Marital status, Children, Level of education, Employment. The test allows to obtain the perception score for each factor: Hazard, Exposed value, Vulnerability. These scores can be put in relation with the scientific data relating to hazard, vulnerability and the exposed value. On January 2013 started a Survey in the Po Valley and Southern Apennines. The survey will be conducted via web using institutional sites of regions, provinces, municipalities, online newspapers to local spreading, etc. Preliminary data will be discussed. Improve our understanding of the perception of seismic risk would allow us to inform more effectively and to built better educational projects to mitigate risk.

Beschreibung: Mucormycosis usually presents as a progressive infection with significant angio-invasion. Mucormycosis due to Mucor irregularis (formerly Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis), however, is exceptional in causing chronic cutaneous infection in immunocompetent humans, ultimately leading to severe morbidity if left untreated. More than 90 % of the cases known to date were reported from Asia, mainly from China. The nearest neighbour of M. irregularis is the saprobic species M. hiemalis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the taxonomic position, epidemiology, and intra- and inter-species diversity of M. irregularis based on 21 strains (clinical n = 17) by multilocus analysis using ITS, LSU, RPB1 and RPB2 genes, compared to results of cluster analysis with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) data. By combining MLST and AFLP analyses, M. irregularis was found to be monophyletic with high bootstrap support, and consisted of five subgroups, which were not concordant in all partitions. It was thus confirmed that M. irregularis is a single species at 96.1–100 % ITS similarity and low recombination rates between populations. Some geographic structuring was noted with some localised populations, which may be explained by limited air-dispersal. The natural habitat of the species is likely to be in soil and decomposing plant material.

Beschreibung: Recently, N. baramensis and N. rafflesiana var. subglandulosa were described from Borneo as new taxa closely related to N. rafflesiana. However, comparison of new collections made in Borneo with N. baramensis and N. rafflesiana var. subglandulosa indicated a synonymy. Furthermore, they were identical to N. hemsleyana, an older taxon formerly treated as synonym of N. rafflesiana. Acknowledging the taxonomic differences to N. rafflesiana, the name N. hemsleyana is reinstated following the priority rule. New evidence is presented that strengthens the interpretation to split N. rafflesiana and N. hemsleyana.

Beschreibung: On May 20th, 2012, an ML 5.9 earthquake (Table 1) occurred near the town of Finale Emilia, in the Central Po Plain, Northern Italy (Figure 1). The mainshock caused 7 casualties and the collapse of several historical buildings and industrial sheds. The earthquake sequence continued with diminishing aftershock magnitudes until May 29th, when an ML 5.8 earthquake occurred near the town of Mirandola, ~12 km WSW of the mainshock (Scognamiglio et al., 2012). This second mainshock started a new aftershock sequence in this area, and increased structural damage and collapses, causing 19 more casualties and increasing to 15.000 the number of evacuees. Shortly after the first mainshock, the Department of Civil Protection (DPC) activated the Italian Space Agency (ASI), which provided post-seismic SAR Interferometry data coverage with all 4 COSMO-SkyMed SAR satellites. Within the next two weeks, several SAR Interferometry (InSAR) image pairs were processed by the INGV-SIGRIS system (Salvi et al., 2012), to generate displacement maps and preliminary source models for the emergency management. These results included continuous GPS site displacement data, from private and public sources, located in and around the epicentral area. In this paper we present the results of the geodetic data modeling, identifying two main fault planes for the Emilia seismic sequence and computing the corresponding slip distributions. We discuss the implication of this seismic sequence on the activity of the frontal part of the Northern Apennine accretionary wedge by comparing the co-seismic data with the long term (geological) and present day (GPS) velocity fields.

Beschreibung: The civil defense of Italy and the European community have planned to reformulate the volcanic risk in several volcanic areas of Italy, among which Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, by taking into account the possible occurrence of damaging pre- or syn-eruptive seismic events. Necessary to achieve this goal is the detailed knowledge of the local attenuation–distance relations. In the present note, we make a survey of the estimates of seismic quality factor (the inverse is proportional to the attenuation coefficient with distance) reported in literature for the area of Campi Flegrei where many, but sometimes contradictory results have been published on this topic. We try to review these results in order to give indications for their correct use when calculating the attenuation laws for this area.

Beschreibung: The societal importance and implications of seismic hazard assessment forces the scientific community to pay an increasing attention to the evaluation of uncertainty, to provide accurate assessments. Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) formally accounts for the natural variability of the involved phenomena, from seismic sources to wave propagation. Recently, an increasing attention is paid to the consequences that alternative modeling procedures have on hazard results. This uncertainty, essentially of epistemic nature, has been shown to have major impacts on PSHA results, leading to extensive applications of techniques like the Logic Tree. Here, we develop a formal Bayesian inference scheme for PSHA that allows, on one side, to explicitly account for all uncertainties and, on the other side, to consider a larger set of sources of information, from heterogeneous models to past data. This process decreases the chance of undesirable biases, and leads to a controlled increase of the precision of the probabilistic assessment. In addition, the proposed Bayesian scheme allows (i) the assignment of a ’subjective’ reliability to single models, without requirement of completeness or homogeneity, and (ii) a transparent and uniform evaluation of the ’strength’ of each piece of information used on the final results. The applicability of the method is demonstrated through the assessment of seismic hazard in the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy), in which the results of a traditional Cornell-McGuire hazard model based on a Logic Tree are locally updated with the historical macroseismic records, to provide a unified assessment that accounts for both sources of information.

Beschreibung: On 20 May 2012, at 02:03:52 GMT, an earthquake with Mw 6.1 (RCMT, http://www.bo.ingv.it/RCMT) occurred in northern Italy striking a densely populated area. The mainshock was followed a few hours later by two severe aftershocks having the same local magnitude (Ml 5.1, 1 and 2 in Figure 1a), and by hundreds of smaller aftershocks. Nine days later, on 29 May, at 07:00:03 GMT, a second event with moment magnitude Mw 6.0 (RCMT, http://www.bo.ingv.it/RCMT) occurred to the west, on an adjacent fault segment. This event was also followed by hundreds of aftershocks, three of them having local magnitude 5.3, 5.2 and 5.1 (3, 4 and 5, respectively, in Figure 1a) (locations from Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, hereinafter INGV, http://iside.rm.ingv.it/; Malagnini et al., 2012; Scognamiglio et al., 2012). Despite the moderate number of casualties if compared to other major events in the Italian history, the economic loss was extremely high, resulting in about EUR 5 billion (AON Benfield, 2012, http://www.aon.com/), as the majority of Italian industrial activities and infrastructures concentrate in this area, the eastern Po plain, which is the largest sedimentary basin in Italy. The mainshocks are associated to two thrust faults with an approximate E-W trend dipping to the South (Figure 1b). The majority of the faults in this region are located in the upper crust, at depths lower than 10 km. The two main shocks are among the strongest earthquakes generated by thrust faults ever recorded in Italy in the instrumental era. The Emilia sequence has been extensively recorded by several strong-motion networks, operating in the Italian territory and neighbouring countries. Some of the networks acquire continuous data streams at their national data centres, which are nodes of EIDA (European Integrated Data Archive, hhtp://eida.rm.ingv.it), a federation of several archives, so that the waveforms can be obtained immediately after the occurrence of an event. Other networks, such as the Italian accelerometric network (RAN), managed by the Italian Department of the Civil Protection (hereinafter DPC), distribute the acceleration waveforms through their web site (http://protezionecivile.gov.it). The data set explored in this study is relative to the six events of the sequence having Ml 〉 5 (Table 1) and consists in 365 accelerograms recorded within a distance of 200 km from the epicentres, that were provided by the permanent and temporary seismic networks of INGV, the Swiss Seismological Service (SED, http://www.seismo.ethz.ch/index) and the DPC.

Beschreibung: Multi-risk approaches have been recently proposed to assess and compare different risks in the same target area. The key points of multi-risk assessment are the development of homogeneous risk definitions and the treatment of risk interaction. The lack of treatment of interaction may lead to significant biases and thus to erroneous risk hierarchization, which is one of primary output of risk assessments for decision makers. In this paper, a formal statistical model is developed to treat interaction between two different hazardous phenomena in long-term multi-risk assessments, accounting for possible effects of interaction at hazard, vulnerability and exposure levels. The applicability of the methodology is demonstrated through two illustrative examples, dealing with the influence of (1) volcanic ash in seismic risk and (2) local earthquakes in tsunami risk. In these applications, the bias in single-risk estimation induced by the assumption of independence among risks is explicitly assessed. An extensive application of this methodology at regional and sub-regional scale would allow to identify when and where a given interaction has significant effects in long-term risk assessments, and thus, it should be considered in multi-risk analyses and risks hierarchization.

Beschreibung: The order Mucorales comprises predominantly fast-growing saprotrophic fungi, some of which are used for the fermentation of foodstuffs but it also includes species known to cause infections in patients with severe immune or metabolic impairments. To inventory biodiversity in Mucorales ITS barcodes of 668 strains in 203 taxa were generated covering more than two thirds of the recognised species. Using the ITS sequences, Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units were defined by a similarity threshold of 99 %. An LSU sequence was generated for each unit as well. Analysis of the LSU sequences revealed that conventional phenotypic classifications of the Mucoraceae are highly artificial. The LSU- and ITS-based trees suggest that characters, such as rhizoids and sporangiola, traditionally used in mucoralean taxonomy are plesiomorphic traits. The ITS region turned out to be an appropriate barcoding marker in Mucorales. It could be sequenced directly in 82 % of the strains and its variability was sufficient to resolve most of the morphospecies. Molecular identification turned out to be problematic only for the species complexes of Mucor circinelloides, M. flavus, M. piriformis and Zygorhynchus moelleri. As many as 12 possibly undescribed species were detected. Intraspecific variability differed widely among mucorealean species ranging from 0 % in Backusella circina to 13.3 % in Cunninghamella echinulata. A high proportion of clinical strains was included for molecular identification. Clinical isolates of Cunninghamella elegans were identified molecularly for the first time. As a result of the phylogenetic analyses several taxonomic and nomenclatural changes became necessary. The genus Backusella was emended to include all species with transitorily recurved sporangiophores. Since this matched molecular data all Mucor species possessing this character were transferred to Backusella. The genus Zygorhynchus was shown to be polyphyletic based on ITS and LSU data. Consequently, Zygorhynchus was abandoned and all species were reclassified in Mucor. Our phylogenetic analyses showed, furthermore, that all non-thermophilic Rhizomucor species belong to Mucor. Accordingly, Rhizomucor endophyticus was transferred to Mucor and Rhizomucor chlamydosporus was synonymised with Mucor indicus. Lecto-, epi- or neotypes were designated for several taxa.

Beschreibung: Establishing species distributions is particularly challenging in large tropical genera of inconspicuous plants. One such genus is Oberonia (Orchidaceae) which we are currently revising for Thailand. When encountering material of a putatively new species, great care has been taken to make a wide geographic search for matching extra-Thai taxa. Against this background, we here record 12 species as new for Thailand: O. dissitiflora, O. evrardii, O. gracilis, O. insectifera, O. lotsyana, O. microphylla, O. orbicularis, O. semifimbriata, O. singalangensis, O. stenophylla, O. suborbicularis, O. wenzelii. Seven records are based (at least in part) on older collections, suggesting that many gaps in currently known species distributions can be filled through revision of existing collections alone. Our wide geographic search for taxonomic matches had three important implications: 1) we succeeded in identifying five species that had not previously been recognized for Thailand or neighbouring regions; 2) we realized that circumscription of three species should be widened, with implications for their known distributions; 3) comparison of numerous collections enabled us to report additionally six new records (O. evrardii for Myanmar; O. insectifera for Papua New Guinea; O. semifimbriata for Borneo; O. wenzelii for India, Myanmar and Java). Eventually, we draw attention to new online tools and resources that facilitate improvements of taxonomic and geographic knowledge in large tropical genera.

Beschreibung: A new species of Hymenostegia (Detarieae, Caesalpinioideae, Leguminosae) is described from Cameroon. Hymenostegia viridiflora has previously been confused with the type species of the genus, H. floribunda, but differs from it in having pale green to greenish yellow instead of lemon yellow petals, a broader upper part of the stipule, more numerous reddish veins on the white bracteoles and generally more numerous and narrower leaflets. As a consequence, the geographic range of true H. floribunda no longer includes Cameroon. Hymenostegia viridiflora is assessed as Vulnerable according to the criteria of IUCN.

Beschreibung: In the frame of the Italian research project INGV-DPC S2 (http://nuovoprogettoesse2.stru.polimi.it/), funded by the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (DPC; National Civil Protection Department) within the agreement 2007-2009, a tool for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) was developed. The main goal of the project was to provide a flexible computational tool for PSHA; the requirements considered essential for the success of the project included: •ability to handle both stationary and non-stationary earthquake time-occurrence models; •ability to use ground-motion prediction models that are not parametric equations but probabilistic "footprints" of the intensities generated by earthquakes of known magnitude and focal characteristics. Usually, these footprints are results of ground motion simulations. Some commonly used programs (e.g., FRISK, by McGuire, 1978; SEISRISK III, by Bender and Perkins, 1987) and more recent and state-of-the-art tools (e.g. OpenSHA, by Field et al., 2003, http://www.opensha.org; OpenQuake, http://openquake.org) for PSHA were analyzed. It was decided to focus on CRISIS2007, which was already a mature and well known application (e.g., Kalyan Kumar and Dodagoudar, 2011; Teraphan et al., 2011; D’Amico et al., 2012; see also http://ecapra.org/CRISIS-2007), but also suitable for additional development and evolution since its source code is freely available on request. The computational tool resulted in an extensive redesign and renovation of the previous CRISIS2007 version. CRISIS is a computer program for PSHA, originally developed in the late 1980's using Fortran as programming language (Ordaz, 1991). In this format, still without a graphical user interface (GUI), it was distributed as part of SEISAN tools (Ottemöller et al., 2011). Ten years later, a GUI was constructed, generating what was called CRISIS99 (Ordaz, 1999). In this version, all the graphic features were written in Visual Basic, but the computation engine remained a Fortran dynamic link library. The reason for the use of mixed-language programming was that computations in Visual Basic were extremely slow. Around 2007 the program was upgraded, in view of the advantages offered by the object-oriented technologies. An object-oriented programming language was required and the natural choice was Visual Basic.Net. In the new version (called CRISIS2007), both the GUI and the computation engine were written in the same language. Finally, in the frame of the mentioned S2 project, starting from 2008, the program was split into two logical layers: core (CRISIS Core Library) and presentation (CRISIS2008). In addition, a new presentation layer was developed for accessing the same functionalities via Web (CRISISWeb). It is worth noting that CRISIS has been mainly written by people that are, at the same time, PSHA practitioners. Therefore, the development loop has been relatively short, and most of the modifications and improvements have been made to satisfy the needs of the developers themselves.

A high proportion of clinical strains was included for molecular identification. Clinical isolates of Cunninghamella elegans were identified molecularly for the first time. As a result of the phylogenetic analyses several taxonomic and nomenclatural changes became necessary. The genus Backusella was emended to include all species with transitorily recurved sporangiophores.\nSince this matched molecular data all Mucor species possessing this character were transferred to Backusella.\nThe genus Zygorhynchus was shown to be polyphyletic based on ITS and LSU data.

Beschreibung: In this study we reassess the taxonomic reference of the previously described holomorphic alkaliphilic fungus Heleococcum alkalinum isolated from soda soils in Russia, Mongolia and Tanzania. We show that it is not an actual member of the genus Heleococcum (order Hypocreales) as stated before and should, therefore, be excluded from it and renamed. Multi-locus gene phylogeny analyses (based on nuclear ITS, 5.8S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 18S rDNA, RPB2 and TEF1-alpha) have displayed this fungus as a new taxon at the genus level within the family Plectosphaerellaceae, Hypocreomycetidae, Ascomycota. The reference species of actual Heleococcum members showed clear divergence from the strongly supported Heleococcum alkalinum position within the Plectosphaerellaceae, sister to the family Glomerellaceae. Eighteen strains isolated from soda lakes around the world show remarkable genetic similarity promoting speculations on their possible evolution in harsh alkaline environments. We established the pH growth optimum of this alkaliphilic fungus at c. pH 10 and tested growth on 30 carbon sources at pH 7 and 10. The new genus and species, Sodiomyces alkalinus gen. nov. comb. nov., is the second holomorphic fungus known within the family, the first one being Plectosphaerella \xe2\x80\x93 some members of this genus are known to be alkalitolerant. We propose the Plectosphaerellaceae family to be the source of alkaliphilic filamentous fungi as also the species known as Acremonium alcalophilum belongs to this group.

Beschreibung: The pyramidelloidean gastropods newly collected from one stratigraphic section and two spot localities in the Rembang anticlinorium (Middle Miocene, northeastern Java) are described and those of various ages in the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden are reviewed. A total of 111 species are covered in this paper; another 22 taxa dealt with by previous authors, of which the material was not available, are briefly commented on in an appendix. The \xe2\x80\x9cRembangian\xe2\x80\x9d (Middle Miocene) assemblage consists of 89 species. Four are identified as formerly described species, namely Leucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Exesilla splendida (Martin); 52 are proposed as new; most of the others almost certainly represent previously undescribed species, but cannot be named because of inadequate material. Parodostomia jogjacartensis (Martin), Parodostomia vandijki (Martin) and Pyramidella nanggulanica Finlay, described from the Eocene deposits of Java, seem to be restricted to that epoch. The Neogene fauna appears to be composed almost entirely of extinct species. Only Leucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Longchaeus turritus (Adams), Pyramidella balteata (Adams), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Nisiturris alma (Thiele) are still present in modern Indo-West Pacific faunas. Most Neogene species seem to be endemic of the Indonesian Archipelago; relationships with other West Pacific fossil faunas have been noted for only a few taxa. The relevance of shell characters in generic recognition, namely the protoconch type, the course and/or the inner lirations of the outer lip, and the sculpture (when present), are significant characters. None of them is genus-diagnostic in itself, but their combination distinguishes the various genera. On this basis, genera are revised and include only those species sharing the relevant characters of their respective type species. The new genera Bulimoscilla, Nisipyrgiscus, Turbolidium and Bulicingulina are introduced.

It was thus confirmed that M. irregularis is a single species at 96.1\xe2\x80\x93100 % ITS similarity and low recombination rates between populations. Some geographic structuring was noted with some localised populations, which may be explained by limited air-dispersal. The natural habitat of the species is likely to be in soil and decomposing plant material.

Beschreibung: The Artematopodidae is a species-poor beetle family with contentious relationships to byrrhoid and elateroid families. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses brought ambiguous results based on a single sequenced species. We investigated the taxonomic placement of Artematopodidae within Elateriformia using ribosomal (18S, 28S) and mitochondrial (rrnL, cox1) molecular markers and three artematopodid species. Our analyses placed Artematopodidae close to Omethidae+Telegeusidae in a basal position of broadly defined Elateroidea. Additionally, we described the first artematopodid species from China \xe2\x80\x93 Eurypogon jaechi sp. nov. and E. heishuiensis sp. nov. These species are reported from mountains of Yunnan and can be easily distinguished from their Palaearctic congeners by their large bodies and metallic green elytra. They differ from each other by the shape of the pronotum, puncturation of the head and pronotum, the relative lengths of the antennomeres 3-5, and the morphology of the female genitalia. With respect to our findings, we discussed the phylogeny, diversity and distribution of the family Artematopodidae.

New evidence is presented that strengthens the interpretation to split N. rafflesiana and N. hemsleyana.

Beschreibung: This contribution deals with activities within the framework of an EC-project, entitled "UPStrat-MAFA (Urban prevention strategies using macroseismic and fault sources)", emphasising the inventory, vulnerability and seismic risk of buildings. The cases considered deal with elementary and non-elementary public schools as well as the residential building stock in Lisbon and Algarve in mainland Portugal. A new concept of global disruption measures is introduced and discussed, with the objective of providing a systematic way to quantify earthquake impact in urban areas. This approach provides civil protection, the authorities and local decision makers with a new tool judged to be valuable in prioritizing mitigation measures and responses.

Beschreibung: In this work, we tackle the problem of seismic hazard at Etna deriving from the recurrent seismogenic activity of local faults, by adopting two independent methods based on probabilistic approaches. We assess the hazard in terms of macroseismic intensity and represent the occurrence probability calculated for different exposure times both on maps and at fault scale. Seismic hazard maps obtained by applying the “site approach” through the SASHA code and a new probabilistic attenuation model, indicate the eastern flank of the volcano as the most hazardous, with expected intensity (Iexp) in 50 years (i.e. the standard exposure time adopted in the seismic regulations) ranging from degrees IX to X EMS. In shorter exposure periods (20, 10, 5 years), values of Iexp up to IX are also reached in the same area, but they are clearly determined by the earthquakes generated by the Timpe fault system. In order to quantify the contribution of local seismogenic sources to the hazard of the region, we reconstruct the seismic history of each fault and calculate with SASHA the probability that earthquakes of a given intensity may be generated in different exposure times. Results confirm the high level of hazard due to the S. Tecla, Moscarello and Fiandaca faults especially for earthquakes of moderate intensity, i.e. VI≤I0≤VII, with probabilities respectively exceeding 50% and 20% in 10 years, and 30% and 10% in 5 years. Occurrence probability of major events (I0≥VIII) at the fault scale has also been investigated by statistics on intertimes. Under stationary assumptions we obtain a probability of 6.8% in 5 years for each structure; by introducing the time-dependency (time elapsed since the last event occurred on each fault) through a BPT model, we identify the Moscarello and S. Tecla faults as the most probable sources to be activated in the next 5 years (2013–2017). This result may represent a useful indication to establish priority criteria for actions aimed at reducing seismic risk at a local scale.

REXELite was developed with the aim of integrating an advanced earthquake records’ repository, such as the ITalianACcelerometricArchive (ITACA), with a tool to define seismic input for engineering seismic analysis according to international standards (with priority to Europe). In fact, REXELite allows to define target design spectra according either to Eurocode 8 or to the Italian building code, and to search ITACA for suitable sets of seven records (comprised of one or two horizontal ground motion components) matching such target spectra: on average, in a user-specified period range, and with the desired tolerance. The records in the set also have, individually and according to some criteria, the most similar spectral shape with respect to that of the code. Selection options include magnitude, source-to-site distance, soil conditions and, if desired, linear scaling of records to reduce further record-to-record variability of the selected suite. This paper introduces REXELite, an internet version of REXEL, a software for automatic selection of ground motion suites for nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures. Beschreibung: This contribution presents the general framework of the European project UPStrat-MAFA "Urban disaster Prevention Strategies using MAcroseismic Fields and FAult Sources" and its ongoing activities. A unique probabilistic procedure is being used for seismic hazard evaluation, using both macroseismic fields and characteristics of fault sources for the analysis of data from volcanic and tectonic areas: Mt. Etna, Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei (Italy), Azores Islands (Portugal), South Iceland (Iceland), Alicante-Murcia (Spain), and mainland and offshore Portugal. An improvement of urban scale vulnerability information on building and network systems (typologies, schools, strategic buildings, lifelines, and others) is proposed in the form of a global Disruption Index, with the objective to provide a systematic way of measuring earthquake impact in urbanized areas considered as complex networks. Disaster prevention strategies are considered based on an education information system, another effective component of the disaster risk reduction given by long-term activities.

Beschreibung: The 2009 L’Aquila earthquake sequence includes the April 6 Mw 6.3 main shock and triggered events on April 7 and 9, each recorded on a digital network having five stations on the hanging wall of the main shock fault. We describe a geometric source model drawing upon inversions by others. We describe record-specific ground motion data processing that includes the incorporation of static displacements of up to 13 cm (downdrop of hanging wall). The resulting database includes 47, 38, and 31 corrected triaxial recordings from the April 6, 7, and 9 events, respectively. We present site conditions for recording stations, including recent surface wave and borehole geophysics. We demonstrate that the high-frequency data are weaker than expected for normal fault earthquakes of these magnitudes and that the data attenuate with distance at rates generally consistent with modified next generation attenuation (NGA) equations for Italy that were available prior to the event.

Beschreibung: The Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe (SHARE) project, which began in June 2009, aims at establishing new standards for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In this context, a logic tree for ground-motion prediction in Europe has been constructed. Ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) and weights have been determined so that the logic tree captures epistemic uncertainty in ground-motion prediction for six different tectonic regimes in Europe. Here we present the strategy that we adopted to build such a logic tree. This strategy has the particularity of combining two complementary and independent approaches: expert judgment and data testing. A set of six experts was asked to weight pre-selected GMPEs while the ability of these GMPEs to predict available data was evaluated with the method of Scherbaum et al. (Bull Seismol Soc Am 99:3234–3247, 2009). Results of both approaches were taken into account to commonly select the smallest set of GMPEs to capture the uncertainty in ground-motion prediction in Europe. For stable continental regions, two models, both from eastern North America, have been selected for shields, and three GMPEs from active shallow crustal regions have been added for continental crust. For subduction zones, four models, all non-European, have been chosen. Finally, for active shallow crustal regions, we selected four models, each of them from a different host region but only two of them were kept for long periods. In most cases, a common agreement has been also reached for the weights. In case of divergence, a sensitivity analysis of the weights on the seismic hazard has been conducted, showing that once the GMPEs have been selected, the associated set of weights has a smaller influence on the hazard.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the ongoing activities for the assessment of the urban seismic risk at Mt. Etna volcano using the “Disruption Index” approach. We use updated information on the historic main seismicity, seismogenic faults and intensity attenuation that in a recent research project produced probabilistic seismic hazard maps and scenarios expressed in terms of macroseismic intensity. To apply the Disruption Index at Etna, we consider a probabilistic approach for seismic hazard evaluation based jointly on macroseismic fields and fault parameters. For information on the urban scale vulnerability, we use a GIS to organise data relating to buildings and network systems (e.g. typologies, schools, strategic structures, lifelines) related to the municipalities more exposed to seismic risk. The convolution of ground motion and vulnerability/ impact is based on a Monte Carlo simulation. We present here some preliminary results on the identification of nodes that are responsible for major disruption in urban systems.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we apply a probabilistic procedure to model the attenuation of the macroseismic intensity in the Mt. Etna region, which allows estimating probabilistic seismic scenarios. Starting from the local earthquake catalogue, we select a dataset of 47 events having epicentral intensity I0 from VI to IX–X EMS, and update the model parameters previously achieved for Italy according to the Bayesian paradigm. For each class of epicentral intensity I0, we then estimate the probability distribution of the intensity at a site conditioned on the epicentre-site distance through a binomial-beta model, under the assumption of a point seismic source and isotropic decay (circular). The mode of the distribution is taken as the expected intensity Is at that site. Since the strongest earthquakes show a preferential propagation of shaking along the fault strike and a rapid decrease in the perpendicular direction, we also consider the anisotropic decay (elliptical) of the intensity due to a linear source (finite fault). We therefore transform the plane so that the ellipse has the length of the fault rupture as maximum axis and its strike as azimuth is changed into a circle with fixed diameter; then we apply the probabilistic model obtained for the isotropic case to the modified data. The entire calculation procedure is implemented in the software PROSCEN which, given the location and the epicentral intensity (and eventually the fault parameters) of the earthquake to be simulated, generates the probabilistic seismic scenario according to the isotropic and anisotropic models of attenuation. The results can be plotted on grid maps representing (1) the intensity that can be exceeded with a fixed probability, or (2) the probability of exceeding a fixed intensity value. The first representation may also find application in seismic monitoring at Etna volcano, in order to produce real-time intensity ShakeMaps based on the instrumental parameters calculated by the automatic earthquake processing system.

Beschreibung: We propose a method to introduce a refined representation of the ground motion in the framework of the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA). This study is especially oriented to the incorporation of a priori information about source parameters, by focusing on the directivity effect and its influence on seismic hazard maps. Two strategies have been followed. One considers the seismic source as an extended source, and it is valid when the PSHA seismogenetic sources are represented as fault segments. We show that the incorporation of variables related to the directivity effect can lead to variations up to 30% of the hazard level, in terms of spectral acceleration response at 5 sec., exceeding probability of 10% in 50 years. The second one concerns the more general problem of the seismogenetic areas, where each point is a seismogenetic source having the same chance of enucleate a seismic event. In our proposition the point source is associated to the rupture-related parameters, defined using a statistical description. As an example, we consider a source point of an area characterized by strike slip faulting style. With the introduction of the directivity correction the modulation of the hazard map reaches values up to 100%. The introduction of directivity does not increase uniformly the hazard level, but acts more like a redistribution of the estimation that is consistent with the fault orientation. A general increase appears only when no a-priori information is available. However, nowadays good a-priori knowledge exists on style of faulting, dip and orientation of faults associated to the majority of the seismogenetic zones of the present seismic hazard maps. Following this method, all the information collected may be easily converted to obtain a more comprehensive and meaningful probabilistic Seismic Hazard formulation.

Beschreibung: An extension of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is proposed to introduce a priori information about seismic source parameters. In particular, faulting style is taken into account with a theoretical corrective coefficient applied to the attenuation law. The validity of this correction is assessed through a comparison with observed data, attenuation law predictions corrected and not corrected, and the results of attenuation laws containing faulting style parameters. The probabilistic nature of the analysis is maintained, introducing into the classical hazard formulation a 2D probability density function describing the most probable focal mechanisms associated with each seismic source zone. This new expression may also be used in the framework of deaggregation analysis. Thus, the design earthquake resulting from the deaggregation is characterized by a focal mechanism. An application to a site located in the Southern Apennines, Italy, is shown. The result of the analysis emphasizes the importance of strike-slip events in the seismic hazard context, compared with normal faulting seismic activity in this region.
