    Description: Mucormycosis usually presents as a progressive infection with significant angio-invasion. Mucormycosis due to Mucor irregularis (formerly Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis), however, is exceptional in causing chronic cutaneous infection in immunocompetent humans, ultimately leading to severe morbidity if left untreated. More than 90 % of the cases known to date were reported from Asia, mainly from China. The nearest neighbour of M. irregularis is the saprobic species M. hiemalis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the taxonomic position, epidemiology, and intra- and inter-species diversity of M. irregularis based on 21 strains (clinical n = 17) by multilocus analysis using ITS, LSU, RPB1 and RPB2 genes, compared to results of cluster analysis with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) data. By combining MLST and AFLP analyses, M. irregularis was found to be monophyletic with high bootstrap support, and consisted of five subgroups, which were not concordant in all partitions. It was thus confirmed that M. irregularis is a single species at 96.1–100 % ITS similarity and low recombination rates between populations. Some geographic structuring was noted with some localised populations, which may be explained by limited air-dispersal. The natural habitat of the species is likely to be in soil and decomposing plant material.

    Notes: Abstract –  Spatial and temporal variation of species–environment relationships were evaluated for shallow-margin and deep-water fish assemblages in the Brazos River, a large floodplain river in Texas, USA. Total variation among the deep-water assemblages (11 species, 86% turnover across gill net samples) was greater than for shallow-margins (38 species, 64% turnover across seine samples). For both shallow-margin and deep-water assemblages, variation was greater among sites than between winter and summer seasons. Shallow-margin assemblage structure was related to depth, velocity and substrate, whereas for deep-water assemblages river discharge, temperature and velocity were important. Season itself accounted for little of the variation among either shallow (6.7%) or deep-water (2.3%) assemblages. Overall temporal patterns of shallow-margin samples appeared to show responses to juvenile recruitment, spates and migration of coastal fishes, whereas for deep-water samples, patterns related to use of reproductive habitats, juvenile recruitment and seasonal activity levels. Brazos River assemblages were less variable overall in comparison with studies along similar length of reach in headwater streams and wadeable rivers. The residual variation in species distribution (54% for shallow-margin and 67% for deepwater) that was not explained by instream variables and season suggests a greater influence of biotic interactions in rivers, particularly those across the spatially dynamic interface of main channel habitats and shallow river margins.

    Notes: Calculations are given for some properties of x-ray diffractors having the shape of a logarithmic spiral in one direction. The locus of points on a curved diffractor's surface is calculated for a given deviation from the Bragg angle when the diffractor is used at Bragg angles ranging from 15° to 75°. Four cases are considered, including a cylindrical logarithmic spiral and logarithmic spirals of revolution about an axis lying in the plane of the Rowland circle with the source at the origin of the spiral and with the source displaced from the origin. The resulting collection solid angles are compared with the Johann, the Johansson, the spherical plate, the Wittry, and the point-to-point focusing geometries. It is concluded that the diffractors based on a logarithmic spiral are useful because they provide better performance than some of these other diffractors and may be easier to fabricate.

    Notes: Advantages of wavelength-dispersive spectrometers over energy-dispersive spectrometers for parallel detection of x rays are discussed and factors involved in the design of wavelength-dispersive spectrometers are reviewed. The dispersion and collection solid angle of fixed-position Bragg diffractors used for parallel detection of x rays are calculated and the properties of four such spectrometers based on singly and doubly curved diffractors are compared with the properties of scanning monochromators. It is concluded that the previously studied parallel-detection spectrometers based on Bragg diffractors are less advantageous than scanning monochromators but they may be preferred when it is necessary to detect many characteristic x-ray lines simultaneously or to avoid the use of moving parts.

    Notes: Polyacrylonitrile precursor fiber of a special grade for making carbon fibers was modified by stretching in the prestabilization stage to various extents. The effect of such stretching on tensile properties of the original precursor fiber, intermediate (oxidized) fiber, and resultant carbon fiber prepared through a continuous process was monitored. Improvements in tensile modulus of fibers at various stages were observed with increasing stretch ratios. However, no obvious enhancement of tensile strength of final carbon fibers was found. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: By following the progression of continuous carbonization (300-1250°C) of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based oxidized fibers, variations in tensile mechanical properties and morphological structure are reported in detail along the carbonization line. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the fibers generally increase throughout the carbonization stage. Meanwhile, the fiber diameter displays a significant decrease. The preferred orientation of carbon layer planes is observed to increase remarkably for temperatures over 400°C. In a similar manner, the stacking size increases significantly but reaches saturation around 600°C, a changing point corresponding to that observed for the variation of the Young's modulus. However, beyond about 1200°C, the stacking size again displays a marked increase. Results thus obtained are interpreted in relation to each other. Possible implications are also discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The progression of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers on multistage stabilization stage has been monitored by following the variations in density, elemental composition, morphological aspect, and mechanical properties. The effects of various processing conditions during the multistage stabilization on the mechanical properties of final carbon fibers were evaluated in detail. To achieve an optimal extent of stabilization of PAN fibers is critical as the final mechanical properties of carbon fibers are concerned. This aim can be realized by adjusting and matching the temperatures in each step and the processing rates during multistage stabilization. Imposing stretching on multistage stabilization is beneficial to mechanical properties of carbon fibers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
