Notes: Abstract Particle densities are determined for a decaying axially blown SF6 are between current zero and brekdown, some 100 μs later. During the time of interest, primarily only atoms, diatomic molecules and ions can be built up by reactions. Therefore, in a first approach equilibrium densities are derived for SF6 which has decomposed into its considemic and diatomic components. In a second approach reaction kinetics are considered. It turns out that the development of densities occurs in two steps. During the first approx. 100 μs there is a strong deviation from equilibrium. Afterwards the most abundant particles remain near their partial, diatomic equilibrium values. Near breakdown the degree of ionization is of the order of 1013 cm−3 with the most abundant ions S 2 + and F−. This density is sufficient to distort the applied electric field. Future theories of breakdown in hot gases must take into account this principal difference as compared with the conditions in cold gases.

Notes: Abstract Nanoscale cobalt-copper multilayers prepared by pulsed laser deposition on oxidized silicon substrate were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopic (TEM) methods combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The multilayers proved to be polycrystalline with grain sizes between some nanometers and the stack thickness. The topmost copper layer was incomplete with droplets up to 1 μm. For single layer thicknesses greater than 4 nm it could be shown that the structure of the layer stacks was face centred cubic with hexagonal close packed parts in the cobalt layers.

Notes: Abstract A model is presented, which yields the breakdown field strength for space-chargefree configurations and the corona onset voltage for conditions with space charges in unitary, attaching gases and gas mixtures. It is entirely based on a physical description. Therefore, it does not require form parameters to be adjusted by comparison with experiments. It only necessitates the knwoledge of a set of any three material data out of a list of eight material properties which are available for a large number of gases. The model is applied to SF6 as well as to binary and multiple mixtures of N2, CO2, SF6, C4F6,c-C4F8, C3F8, CBrClF2. The results generally agree to within 10% with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract. Fe/Al multilayers are prepared by crossed-beam pulsed laser deposition and investigated by Rutherford backscattering, conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results are compared to purely ballistic simulations of the deposition process using the TRIDYN4.0 code. It is found that the intermixing of adjacent layers must be described in terms of ballistic mixing followed by chemical mixing. The phase formation in the transition layer between adjacent layers follows the non-equilibrium behavior of Fe/Al in analogy to investigations on mechanically alloyed and ion-beam-mixed Fe/Al. In Fe-rich areas a bcc solid solution is formed. In Al-rich environment an amorphous phase is observed.

Notes: Summary Capability and extent of xylitol metabolism in vitro was studied in a variety of non-hepatic tissues of rats, using enzymatic and isotopic methods. Only kidney was found to be able to utilize xylitol at a significant rate while in all other organs tested — lung, brain, heart muscle, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue — no uptake of xylitol was detectable using two independent methods. In accordance with these results the incorporation of radioactivity from [U-14C]-xylitol as substrate into the products CO2 and lactate was found to be very small in all organs with the exception of kidney and when compared to that from [U-14C]-glucose it was less than 5%. From these results it is concluded that besides liver only kidney can utilize xylitol to a significant extent while for the other tissues studied xylitol is not a suitable substrate.

Notes: Abstract UV-spectra of foil-excited Si ions accelerated to 20 MeV show 120 known lines of Si VIII-XIV and about 150 additional lines in the region 8–61 nm. 28 new classifications are proposed. Then=2 level scheme of Si X is revised. Two transitions are reassigned.

Notes: Abstract The fluorescence emission intensity between the Na+, and the K+ complex of Na+,K+-ATPase, labeled with fluorescein 5′-isothiocyanate (FITC), differs by 30 to 40%. Experimental studies are carried out to elucidate the physical reasons which account this intensity difference. The dissociation constant of protolysis of the covalently bound FITC and its fluorescence decay times are determined in media of different ionic compositions and are compared with the corresponding properties of a synthetic model compound. The fluorophore bound to the protein is characterized by two decay times in the nanosecond range; the model compound, by a single one. The static fluorescence intensity changes are discussed on the basis of these results.

Notes: Abstract The interaction between the fluorescent ouabain derivative DEDO and purified renal Na,K-ATPase (isolated from different animal species) is investigated. Equilibrium binding studies provide a pK value of about 7.5 and a stoichoimetric coefficient of 1. Nonmodified ouabain exhibits the same affinity to the rabbit enzyme; the enzyme originating from the other sources binds DEDO 10 times less strongly than ouabain. Kinetic studies indicate that this is the consequence of a 10 times higher dissociation rate constant of the complexes formed with DEDO. The fluorescence emission intensity of DEDO is enhanced, being dependent on the enzyme source. The single decay time of DEDO is 3 ns in the absence and 21 ns in the presence of the rabbit enzyme and 14 ns in the presence of the pig renal enzyme. This result suggests that the fluorophore of DEDO is bound to a very hydrophobic environment of the enzyme. Further characterization of the static fluorescence spectra provides evidence for energy transfer between Trp residues of the enzyme and DEDO. Distance estimations suggest that one or two Trp residues are likely to be located in the proximity of the fluorophore.
