Notes: Abstract. Spatial and energetic characteristics of the plasma plume by cross-beam pulsed-laser deposition (CBPLD) were investigated. Effective droplets filtering together with high efficiency of material usage are observed by this approach. Time-of-flight (TOF) technique with electrostatic ion collectors (Langmuir probes operating in the ion-collecting mode) were applied to obtain kinetic energy distribution functions of ionized particles and to compare the ionization degrees of the plasma by the CBPLD and by the conventional PLD. The average and maximum kinetic energies of the ions by the CBPLD are found to be 2–3 times lower as compared to the conventional PLD. At the same time, the fraction of ionized species and highly exited neutrals (Rydberg atoms) in the CBPLD plasma is 1.5–2 times larger in comparison to the conventional approach. Re-sputtering of the material of the growing film by fast ions is a considerable effect in both the PLD methods by the chosen experimental conditions. The angular width of the directional pattern of the plasma plume by CBPLD is comparable to that typical for the conventional PLD.

Notes: Abstract Spectra of photoinduced light absorption in C60 films at high and low excitations in the temperature range between 15 and 300 K have been measured. In addition to the well-known explanation of photoinduced absorption in terms of optical transitions in the system of photogenerated singlet excitons, triplet excitons, and polarons, changes in the absorption spectrum of the fullerite ground state must be considered. We suggest taking into account the effect of crystal field in explaining the features of the photoinduced absorption spectrum. A feature similar to the inverted luminescence spectrum and ascribed to optical excitation of singlet excitons, which is partially allowed owing to intermolecular interaction, has been detected in spectrum of photoinduced absorption.

Notes: Abstract The results of the first experiments devised to investigate the mixing of thin layers of Al and Au during the laser acceleration of flat three-layer targets of Si (5 μm), Al (2 μm), and Au (0.05–0.26 μm) by radiation converted to the second harmonic from the Iskra-4 iodine laser with an intensity of 4×1013−7×1013 W/cm2 (τ 0.5∼1 ns), which acts on the Si side of the target. A method for detecting the occurrence of mixing is developed. It is established that under the experimental conditions the thickness of the mixing region is at least ∼0.15 μm. The results of a theoretical analysis of the evolution of the disturbances leading to mixing are presented.

Notes: Abstract It is found that photoinduced absorption in the energy range 0.6–2.1 eV in C60 films grown by the same method can differ by a factor of 100. This change is attributable a 106-fold increase in the relaxation time τ of electron-hole photoexcitations after working with the films for several months. It is established that the bimolecular recombination mechanism for photoexcitations (triplet excitons and polarons), which is typical of as-prepared and partially aged films, is superseded in fully aged films by thermally activated tunneling of localized photoexcitations. An investigation of the film transmission spectra in the photon energy range 0.2–5.0 eV shows that the long-time variations of the optical properties are associated with a decrease in the concentration of defects forming shallow tails of the density of states. An abrupt decrease of the relaxation time τ and the photoinduced absorption is observed in both types of films at T⩾80 K.

Notes: An ideal polymer chain anchored to a planar surface is considered by using both lattice and continuum model approaches. A general equation relating the lattice and continuum model adsorption interaction parameters is derived in a consistent way by substituting the exact continuum solution for the free chain end distribution function into the lattice model boundary condition. This equation is not mathematically exact but provides excellent results. With the use of this relation the quantitative equivalence between lattice and continuum results was demonstrated for chains of both infinite and finite length and for all three regimes corresponding to attractive, repulsive and adsorption-threshold energy of polymer-surface interaction. The obtained equations are used to discuss the distribution functions describing the tail of an anchored macromolecule and its adsorbed parts. For the tail-related properties the results are independent of the microscopic details of the polymer chain and the adsorbing surface. One interesting result obtained in the vicinity of adsorption threshold point is a bimodal tail length distribution function, which manifests chain populations with either tail or loop dominance. The properties related to the number of surface contacts contain, apart from universal scaling terms, also a nonuniversal factor depending on microscopic details of polymer-surface interaction. We derived an equation for calculating this nonuniversal factor for different lattice models and demonstrated excellent agreement between the lattice results and the continuum model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using a self-consistent field approach we analyze the equilibrium characteristics of macromolecules grafted at one end onto a planar surface and having an adsorbing group at the second end. Three different systems are considered: (1) isolated end-adsorbing Gaussian chain, (2) end-adsorbing chains admixed into a polymer brush with nonadsorbing free ends, and (3) polymer brush formed by the end-adsorbing macromolecules. The dependences of the average height and dispersion of the adsorbing ends are calculated as functions of the adsorption energy and the chain length. The experimental results on relevant systems are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An exact expression is obtained for the partition function of a Gaussian chain of arbitrary length adsorbed on a plane with stretching force acting on the chain's free end. It is found that the increase in the stretching force makes the macromolecule undergo an unusual phase transition from the adsorbed state into a stretched chain state. In the thermodynamic limit, the free energy has a discontinuity in the slope at the transition point, the average number of chain segments contacting with the plane changes abruptly, and finite latent heat is absorbed. However, metastable states are completely absent and the dependence of the thermodynamic potential on the order parameter always has only one minimum. In the vicinity of the transition point, the anomalous slowing down of large scale relaxation takes place. Thus the transition under consideration has simultaneously some features of both first- and second-order phase transitions. Behavior of the finite systems under the transition is discussed.
