Notes: Summary In this paper we present a small-angle neutron scattering measurement on concentrated aqueous solutions of lysozyme. The ranges for thepH and for the ionic strength of the solutions are chosen in order to match the physiological values at which the enzymatic activity of the protein is at his maximum. The net charge has been determined by separate tritation experiment. The form factor and the structure factor were extracted from the experimental data. The structure factor is quantitatively reproduced within a hard-sphere model with an attractive Yukawa-tail potential. The importance in this kind of systems of the attractive interaction, even at far from zero net charge is highlighted.

Notes: Summary Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the large 50S ribosomal subunit of the extreme thermophile archaebacteriumSulfolobus solfataricus are presented. The structural effects induced by magnesium ions and temperature are investigated. Supramolecular aggregation was present in all the investigated conditions. Removal of magnesium ions and increase of temperature reduce the intensity of the scattering atQ=0. This reduction is discussed looking at the Fourier inversion of the scattering intensity, which includes both inter- and intra-particle contributions.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si è misurato il coefficiente di assorbimento acustico in una soluzione all' 1% di lisozima, a frequenze comprese tre 5 e 50 MHz, in funzione del tempo.
Notes: Summary The acoustic-absorption coefficient is measured in a 1% w/w lysozyme solution, at frequencies ranging from 5 to 50 MHz, as a function of time. It is shown that a relaxation process due to diffusional motion of clusters exists. Such a process is gradually quenched, as the interacting clusters become fixed in a thixotropic solidlike structure. The obtained results are discussed in the frame of a general model early proposed on the basis of viscosity and light scattering experiments.

Notes: Summary We report on the effects of monohydric alcohols on the thixotropic properties of a 1% (by weight) BSA solution. The presence of alcohols in the solution medium, even in very small amounts, weakens the structure responsible for the thixotropic properties: this effect increases with increasing alcohol concentration and alkyl group size. We also present indirect evidence relating the observed effects to the alteration, in the presence of alcohols, of protein-solvent hydrophobic interactions.

Notes: Summary The viscosity of BSA water solutions has been measured as a function of temperature, for different values of concentration. Measurements are performed both with a capillary-flow viscometer and a rotating-cylinder one, in order to investigate the thyxotropic behaviour of the system. The data can be discussed in terms of the Einstein-Mooney-Padova equation. In such a case it can be shown that both the attractive and the repulsive interaction, between BSA molecules, take place, the latter being mainly responsible for the thyxotropic behaviour. It is also shown that between 35°C and 40°C the solutions exihibit a singular behaviour, the interaction attaining a minimum value.

Notes: Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements have been performed in heavy water solutions of 2-butoxyethanol as a function of concentration and temperature. The results indicate that there exist some alcohol aggregation above a narrow concentration range (x=0.015–0.02, where x is the alcohol molar fraction) and the size of the aggregates increases with temperature taking a maximum value at a composition close to the critical concentration. The analysis of the size and of the absolute scattered intensity at q=0(I0) in terms of a microscopic model of aggregation, as well as the indications from other experiments, suggest that these aggregates are micelle-like structures.
