Notes: Summary Atomic absorption spectrometry combined with extraction is described for the determination of tri- and hexavalent chromium. The chromium diethyldithiocarbamate chelate was used for chromium (VI), whereas hydroxyquinolate or thenoyltrifluoroacetonate chelate for chromium(III). The method is rapid and precise.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine schnelle, empfindliche Methode zur Bestimmung von Mikrogrammmengen Schwefel wurde beschrieben.
Notes: Summary A rapid sensitive method for the determination of microgram amounts of sulphur is described. Sulphur (free or combined) in organic substances is oxidised completely in an oxygen atmosphere over a platinum gauze catalyst after a preliminary incomplete combustion in air. The oxides of sulphur are collected on silver gauze at 550°. The oxygen is purged from the apparatus with a stream of nitrogen and then the silver sulphate is heated in a stream of hydrogen to yield hydrogen sulphide which is collected in an alkaline zinc acetate solution and subsequently determined spectrophotometrically by the methylene blue method. The recovery of sulphur in the range 5–40μg was 100±5%. The method takes less than 25 minutes for a single determination and is reliable for the determination of as little as1 μg of sulphur in all types of organic compounds. Solid, liquid, or gaseous samples may be used.

Notes: Kinetic equations have been developed for polymers that decompose by the zipper mechanism. The usual assumption of steady state kinetics has not been made. Plots of the fraction decomposed α, as a function of time demonstrate a variety of patterns depending upon the relative values of the fraction k1, of chains becoming activated per second and the fraction k2 of an activated chain that decomposes per second.

Notes: Thermal degradation of chlorinated cis- and trans-polybutadienes was studied by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography. The mechanism of chlorination reaction and thermal degradation of the polymers was examined over a wide range of degree of chlorination. The steric structure of so-called head-to-head polyvinyl chloride was elucidated by analysis of such characteristic degradation products as o-, m-, and p-dichlorobenzenes and vinylidenechloride.

Notes: A unique method of estimating the amount of chemical inversions in monomer placement of isotactic and atactic polypropylene was developed by means of pyrolysis gas chromatography of its chlorination products. The molar proportion of mesitylene/pseudocumene was determined from the chromatograms of the pyrolysis products. The isomers of trimethylbenzene which are formed during the pyrolysis gave good information about the triads in the original polypropylene.

Notes: The negative ion mass spectra of dicarboxylic acids show [M]-· and prominent [M - H]-ions. These ions can therefore be used to determine the molecular weight of dicarboxylic acids which do not give positive molecular ions. The [C2H3]- ion is a base peak in the spectra of maleic and fumaric acids. Isomeric phthalic acids are readily differentiated.
