Notes: The three-parameter tabular correlation of Pitzer et al. for calculating the compressibility factor of pure components has been extended to lower temperatures in the region where Tr is from 0.5 to 0.80 and Pr is from 0 to 9. The compressibility-factor is expressed linearly in the acentric factor Z = Z(0) + ωZ(1) with values of Z(0) and Z(1) tabulated in terms of Tr and Pr. The generalized correlation has been tested for 21 compounds with a total number of 463 data points. The average deviations in the calculated compressibility factors are 1.63% for the compressed liquids and 0.67% for the gases.

Notes: A theoretical study was carried out for the analysis of the high pressure polyethylene tubular reactor with axial mixing (TRAM). In the study, the Contraction Mapping Theorem in the square-integrable function space L2[0, 1] was first used to derive a uniqueness criterion for the existence of the steady state solution of the polyethylene TRAM. Then, an algorithm was derived which enabled us to compute the profiles of reactor temperature and concentration. Details of reactor performance were investigated in terms of the reactor operating and design variables: heat transfer coefficient, feed temperature and concentration, axial mixing, the length of reactor, and the distribution of preheating and cooling zones of the reactor. Also investigated in this study was the product quality in terms of the number-average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution as affected by change in reactor operating conditions and by the chain transfer reactions.

Notes: The operation of two arrangements of multistage adsorption beds, parallel and series, was analyzed, and the optimal design problem of minimizing the capital and operating costs of the multistage adsorption bed systems was formulated. Solution of the optimization problem was obtained by using the Fibonacci search scheme. For the purpose of the study, data on the adsorption of liquid on activated carbon were taken from the literature for both single solute and multisolute adsorption systems and was used to derive the expressions for adsorption rate and the equilibrium relationship. Details of the performance of the optimally designed multistage adsorption bed systems are presented in terms of the physical and design parameters.

Notes: The absorption rate of SO2 from a gas mixture of SO2 and N2 into pure water, HCl, and NaCl solutions has been measured at 25°C in a continuous stirred vessel with an unbroken gas-liquid interface. The rates of the liquid-phase mass transfer are accurately modeled by the theory of surface renewal with the instantaneous, reversible hydrolysis of dissolved SO2. The theory and results are applicable to SO2 absorption from waste gases.

Notes: A model for packed-bed reactors with dispersion is derived rigorously via the volume averaging approach. Though it is quantitatively more consistent with experimental data, it requires less computational efforts than the prevalent Fickian model. The adverse effects of dispersion on conversion are demonstrated both numerically and analytically using the new model.

Notes: The dynamic pulse-response technique was used to measure effective diffusivities under nonreacting conditions in two, unsulfided, extrudate-type, hydrodesulfurization catalyst pellets of different porosities. Pore-volume distribution data showed a bidisperse pore structure with a broad pore-size range (100 μm to 3 nm).The main purpose of the study was to evaluate various methods for calculating the tortuosity factor, τ. For this particular catalyst, the most constant and unreasonable values of τ were obtained by supposing that diffusion occurred in all the pore volume (micro and macropores) and by summing the combined Knudsen and bulk contributions over each increment of pore volume.

Notes: A new membrane enzyme reactor system is proposed, and its performance is analytically and numerically examined by operational modes. This membrane-separated, two-compartmental reactor is operated in a cyclic manner such that ultrafiltration swing is induced either by a pulsatile flow or by an alternating pressure difference. Substrate and product solutins are permeable to the membrane while enzyme is impermeable. In one reservoir, enzyme solution is stored into which substrate is supplied by diffusion-coupled ultrafiltration and product is removed by the same mechanism into the substrate compartment, which is similar to CSTR in view of fluid mixing and continuous inlet-outlet flows, but differs from CSTR in a sense that reaction takes place only in the enzyme compartment. The governing model equations are derived and their analytical solutions are obtained for fast reaction and high ultrafiltration with first-order kinetics. In addition, nonlinear Michaelis-Menten kinetics problem is solved numerically. As a result, we have found that the system can increase the conversion substantially compared with previous diffusion-moderated enzyme reactors where diffusion very often can limit the extent of conversion.
