    Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Although the very high resolution experimental LANDSAT imagery permits rapid snow cover mapping at low cost, only one observation is available very 9 days. In contrast, low resolution operational imagery acquired by the ITOS and SMS/GOES satellites provide the daily synoptic observations necessary to monitor the rapid changes in snow covered areas in the entire Salt-Verde watershed. Geometric distortions in meteorological satellite imagery require specialized optical equipment or digital image processing for snow cover mapping.

    Description: Ground surveys and aerial observations were used to monitor rapidly changing moisture conditions in the Salt-Verde watershed. Repetitive satellite snow cover observations greatly reduce the necessity for routine aerial snow reconnaissance flights over the mountains. High resolution, multispectral imagery provided by LANDSAT satellite series enabled rapid and accurate mapping of snow-cover distributions for small- to medium-sized subwatersheds; however, the imagery provided only one observation every 9 days of about a third of the watershed. Low resolution imagery acquired by the ITOSa dn SMS/GOES meteorological satellite series provides the daily synoptic observation necessary to monitor the rapid changes in snow-covered area in the entire watershed. Short term runoff volumes can be predicted from daily sequential snow cover observations.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Some experiments have been made with such materials as glass and various minerals to determine the Brewster's angle by means of a one—axis goniometer. The tube of this apparatus contains a polarizer and may be used both for microscopic and telescopic observation. A special mechanism causes the reflecting plane at any time to be perpendicular to the bisecting line between the collimator and the telescopemicroscope-tubus. By using the telescope the polarizing angle may be recognized from a black band coming into the field of vision, and by using the microscope from the intensity of light being at a minimum. This method of determination is basically independent of the number of the refractive index. It is possible to determine approximately the average refraction of the minerals in an uncovered thin rock section. Simultaneously one achieves an effect similar to dark ground illumination. Moreover, we also took quantitative measurements of light intensity by the aid of a photoelement attached to the telescope. The minimum of the intensity obtained in this way indicates the Brewster's angle. The minimum values can be derived from these curves by means of mathematical or graphical methods, but they are less accurate than the ones obtained by the aid of the black band. Disturbing effects occur e. g. as a consequence of polishing, especially of dry polishing. The limit of error is only small with planes of crystals, but quite considerable on those of glass. The obviously too high indices of reflexion for glasses could perhaps be used as a measure for the degree of high polishing. Investigations into birefringent crystals demonstrate that the two directions of vibration in conformity with the value of double refraction have different polarizing angles.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe eines Einkreisgoniometers mit senkrechter Drehachse wurde an Schliffebenen verschiedener Materialien (Glas, Minerale) der Brewstersche Winkel bestimmt. Das mit Polarisationsprismen ausgerüstete Instrument besaß einen sowohl für teleskopischen wie für mikroskopischen Strahlengang verwendbaren Tubus. Eine mechanische Einrichtung bewirkte, daß die reflektierende Fläche in jedem Augenblick senkrecht zur Winkelhalbierenden von Fernrohr und Kollimator stand. Die Erreichung des Polarisationswinkels wird teleskopisch am Auftreten eines dunklen Balkens, mikroskopisch an der minimalen Helligkeit erkannt. Diese Bestimmungsart ist von der Größe des Brechungsquotienten grundsätzlich unabhängig. Im ungedeckten Dünnschliff kann man die mittlere Lichtbrechung der Minerale annähernd bestimmen. Gleichzeitig ergibt sich eine Art Dunkelfeldbeobachtung. Mit Hilfe eines angeschlossenen Photoelementes wurden auch quantitative Messungen durchgeführt. Die erhaltenen Intensitätskurven haben ihr Minimum beim Polarisationswinkel. Die aus diesen Kurven graphisch und rechnerisch abgeleiteten Minimumwerte sind weniger genau als die durch Einstellen des dunklen Balkens bestimmten. Störeffekte entstehen unter anderem durch den Poliervorgang, insbesondere bei Trockenpolitur. Bei Kristallen ist der Fehler im allgemeinen gering, bei Gläsern hingegen meist beträchtlich. Die scheinbar höhere Lichtbrechung von Gläsern könnte vielleicht als Maß für den erzielten Hochglanz verwendet werden. Bei doppeltbrechenden Kristallen ist der Polarisationswinkel gemäß der Höhe der Doppelbrechung für die entsprechenden Schwingungsrichtungen verschieden groß.

    Description / Table of Contents: The infrared spectra of [(CH3)2GeS]3, [(C4H9)2GeS]3, [(C6H5)2GeS]3, [(CH3)2SnS]3, [(C4H9)2SnS]3, [(C6H5)2SnS]3 and [(C6H5)2PbS]3 are reported and assigned. With these data, and the crystal structure of [(C6H5)2SnS]3, the bonding nature in these molecules are discussed. Strong (p → d)π-double bond character for the Ge-S, Sn-S and Pb-S linkages could not be observed.
    Notes: Die Infrarot-Spektren von [(CH3)2GeS]3, [(C4H9)2GeS]3, [(C6H5)2GeS]3, [(CH3)2SnS]3, [(C4H9)2SnS]3, [(C6H5)2SnS]3 und [(C6H5)2PbS]3 werden mitgeteilt und zugeordnet. An Hand der gewonnenen Daten und der Kristallstruktur des trimeren Diphenylzinnsulfids werden die Bindungsverhältnisse diskutiert. Starke (p → d)π - Doppelbindungsanteile zwischen Ge, Sn und Pb einerseits und Schwefel andererseits können nicht beobachtet werden.
