Description: Home Plate is a layered plateau in Gusev crater on Mars. It is composed of clastic rocks of moderately altered alkali basalt composition, enriched in some highly volatile elements. A coarse-grained lower unit is overlain by a finer-grained upper unit. Textural observations indicate that the lower strata were emplaced in an explosive event, and geochemical considerations favor an explosive volcanic origin over an impact origin. The lower unit likely represents accumulation of pyroclastic materials, while the upper unit may represent eolian reworking of the same pyroclastic materials.

Description: Developing flows in two out-of-plane double S-bend configurations have been measured by laser-Doppler anemometry. The first duct had a rectangular cross-section 40mmx40mm at the inlet and consisted of a uniform area 22.5 deg. - 22.5 deg. S-duct upstream with a 22.5 deg.- 22.5 deg. S- diffuser downstream. The second duct had a circular cross-section and consisted of a 45 deg. - 45 deg. uniform area S-duct upstream with a 22.5 deg. -22.5 deg. S-diffuser downstream. In both configurations the ratio of the mean radius of curvature to the inlet hydraulic diameter was 7.0, the exit-to-inlet area ratio of the diffusers was 1.5 and the ducts were connected so that the centerline of the S-duct lay in a plane normal to that of the S-diffuser. Streamwise and cross-stream velocity components were measured in laminar flow for the rectangular duct and in turbulent flow for both configurations; measurements of the turbulence levels, cross-correlations and wall static pressures were also made in the turbulent flow cases. Secondary flows of the first kind are present in the first S-duct and they are complemented or counteracted by the secondary flows generated by the area expansion and by the curvature of the S-diffusers downstream. Cross-stream velocities with magnitudes up to 0.19 and 0.11 of the bulk velocity were measured in the laminar and turbulent flows respectively in the rectangular duct and six cross-flow vortices were evident at the exit of the duct in both flow cases. The turbulent flow in the circular duct was qualitatively similar to that in the rectangular configuration, but the cross-stream velocities measured at the exit plane were smaller in the circular geometry. The results are presented in sufficient detail and accuracy for the assessment of numerical calculation methods and are listed in tabular form for this purpose.

Description: Two-stage temperature stabilized circuit using two transistors is described. Increase in temperature causes the base-to-emitter voltage of n-p-n transistor to become less positive whereas the base-to-emitter voltage of p-n-p transistor becomes less negative, so the temperature-induced variation in V sub 1 and V sub 2 cancel out.

Description: An experimental investigation of developing flows through a combination of out-of-plane S-bend ducts was conducted to gain insight into the redirection of flow in geometries similar to those encountered in practical aircraft wing-root intake ducts. The present double S-bend was fabricated by placing previously investigated S-ducts and S-diffusers in series and with perpendicular planes of symmetry. Laser-Doppler anemometry was employed to measure the three components of mean velocity, the corresponding rms quantities, and Reynolds stresses in the rectangular cross-section ducts. Due to limited optical access, only two mean and rms velocity components were resolved in the circular cross-section ducts. The velocity measurements were complemented by wall static pressure measurements. The data indicates that the flows at the exit are complex and asymmetric. Secondary flows generated by the pressure field in the first S-duct are complemented or counteracted by the secondary flows produced by the area expansion and the curvature of the S-diffuser. The results indicate the dominance of the inlet conditions and geometry upon the development of secondary flows and demonstrate that the flows are predominantly pressure-controlled. The pressure distribution caused by the duct geometry determines the direction and magnitude of the bulk flow while the turbulence dictates the mixing characteristics and profiles in the near wall region.

Description: The meteorites Dho 225 and Dho 735 were recently found in Oman. Studies of their mineralogical and chemical composition suggest that these unusual meteorites are thermally metamorphosed CM2 chondrites [1,2,3]. Similar to Antarctic metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrites, the Dho 225 and Dho 735 are enriched in heavy oxygen compared to normal CMs [1,2]. However, IR studies indicating dehydration of matrix phyllosilicates are needed to confirm that the two new meteorites from Oman are thermally metamorphosed [4]. Synchrotron-based IR microspectroscopy is a new promising technique which allows the acquisition of IR spectra from extremely small samples. Here we demonstrate that this non-destructive technique is a useful tool to study hydration states of carbonaceous chondrites in situ. In addition, we acquired reflectance spectra of bulk powders of the Dho 225 and Dho 735 in the range of 0.3-50 microns.

Description: The primary MER objectives have been successfully completed. The total integration time of all MB measurements exceeds the duration of the primary 90-sols-mission for Spirit's MB spectrometer, and approaches this value for Opportunity's MB spectrometer. Both MB spectrometers continue to accumulate valuable scientific data after three years of operation (data is available for download [13]) The identification of aqueous minerals such as goethite in Gusev crater and jarosite at Meridiani Planum by the MER Mossbauer spectrometers is strong evidence for past water activity at the two landing sites.

Description: The two Miniaturized Moessbauer Spectrometers (MIMOS II) on board the two Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity have now been collecting important scientific data for more than four years. The spectrometers provide information about Fe-bearing mineral phases and determine Fe oxidation states. The total amount of targets analized exceeds 600, the total integration time exceeds 260 days for both rovers. Since landing, more than five half-lives of the Co-57 MB sources have past (intensity at the time of landing approx. 150 mCi). Current integration times are about 50 hours in order to achieve reasonable statistics as opposed to 8 hours at the beginning of the mission. In total, 13 different mineral phases were detected: Olivine, pyroxene, hematite, magnetite and nanophase ferric oxide were detected at both landing sites. At Gusev, ilmenite, goethite, a ferric sulfate phase and a yet unassigned phase (in the rock Fuzzy Smith) were detected. At Meridiani, jarosite, metallic iron in meteoritic samples (kamacite), troilite, and an unassigned ferric phase were detected. Jarosite and goethite are of special interest, as these minerals are indicators for water activity. In this abstract, an overview of Moessbauer results will be given, with a focus on data obtained since the last martian winter. The MER mission has proven that Moessbauer spectroscopy is a valuable tool for the in situ exploration of extraterrestrial bodies and for the study of Febearing samples. The experience gained through the MER mission makes MIMOS II a obvious choice for future missions to Mars and other targets. Currently, MIMOS II is on the scientific payload of two approved future missions: Phobos Grunt (Russian Space Agency; 2009) and ExoMars (European Space Agency; 2013).
