    Description: Le reti permanenti GPS costituiscono una importante risorsa per una serie di studi tecnologici e scientifici. La carenza di conoscenze in studi di tettonica attiva, che comprendono anche la parte di sismologia come l'accumulo di deformazione sulle faglie, è stata a lungo frenata dalla mancanza di reti permanenti GPS sufficientemente dense distribuite su tutto il territorio nazionale. In particolare, la definizione di una placca Adriatica e la sua terminazione meridionale sono ancora materia di dibattito (Oldow et al., 2002; Battaglia et al. 2004). Inoltre, di recente, alcuni importanti lavori (Hollenstein, et al. 2004; D'Agostino and Selvaggi; Serpelloni et al. 2005) hanno mostrato che valori di deformazione molto più alti di quanto si pensava prima sono stati effettivamente riscontrati nella nostra regione e che solo l'uso di una rete densa di stazioni, quindi di un campionamento ad alta densità nelle aree dove sono maggiori le velocità relative, permette di osservare in modo corretto il rilascio, o accumulo, di deformazione. Infine, il contributo della geodesia alla sismologia sta diventando sempre più importante sia nella definizione del rilascio cosismico durante un terremoto e sia nell'osservazione e modellazione dell'accumulo intersismico di deformazione elastica su faglie attive. Da qualche anno, l'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) ha impiegato notevoli risorse e sforzi per rispondere a tali temi scientifici. Selvaggi et al. (2006) hanno gettato le basi e mostrato i primi sviluppi di una rete GPS permanente, la Rete Integrata Nazionale GPS (RING), creata con l'obiettivo di dare un forte contributo scientifico ai temi sopra citati La rete RING (Fig. 1a), nella sua completezza, rappresenta ad oggi non solo un punto di riferimento per studi di carattere scientifico ma anche una robusta infrastruttura tecnologica e informatica per l'archiviazione dei dati GPS per diverse altre reti locali e regionali (Regione Puglia, Regione Friuli, Leica Geosystems). Tali reti, contribuiscono quotidianamente all'acquisizione, all'interno di un server, di dati per un totale di oltre 300 stazioni distribuite sul territorio nazionale (Fig. 1b). Se, poi, si considera anche l'aspetto del processamento dei dati GPS, l'utilizzo di dati GPS appartenenti ad altre reti (locali, regionali o anche esterne al territorio italiano) fa sì che ogni analista utilizzi i dati, in media, di circa 650 stazioni GPS permanenti al giorno.

    Description: The collision between Africa and Eurasia is associated with a complex pattern of deformation within the plate boundary zone, with subduction of oceanic fragments, crustal extension along formerly contracting orogenic belts and back-arc spreading in Tertiary basins. First-order scientific problems regarding the strain accumulation along seismogenic structures, the present-day activity of the Calabrian slab, the existence of rigid blocks within the plate boundary and the regional crust and upper mantle structures are still awaiting for a better understanding. To solve those open questions, the CESIS project, established in 2002 by the INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), is deploying 60 permanent CGPS stations in Southern Italy. All the sites will be equipped with Leica GRX 1200 Pro GPS receivers acquiring at 1Hz sampling interval for seismic source analysis. The data are then transmitted at 30s sampling interval by means of a satellite system (VSAT) to two acquisition centres, located in Rome and in Irpinia. Furthermore, the network sites are integrated either with broad band and very broad band seismometers or accelerometers to improve the monitoring of the background seismicity in Southern Appennines seismic belts and to better constrain the geometry of the seismogenic structures. The satellite data transmission and the integration with seismic instruments makes this network one of the most innovative CGPS networks in Europe. New developments on the GPS monumentation have also been carried out. The research activity resulting from the data coming from the CESIS network will thus exploit the full range of temporal and spatial frequencies that characterize plate boundary deformation, allowing a large range of scientific problems, ranging from earthquake source studies to regional plate kinematics, to be tackled. Some of the most intriguing targets concern (a) the study of present activity of the Calabrian slab and its associated crustal deformation, (b) the southern boundary of the Adriatic block (a rigid microplate whose existence have been proposed on the basis of seismicity distribution, earthquake slip-vectors, and space geodesy), (c) the study of strain build-up along seismogenic faults and (d) the processes which allow the deformation to be localised or distributed on the fault systems. We present (a) a new prototype of short-drilled braced GPS monumentation, (b) the technical description of geodetic data acquisition, (c) the flow and archiving of geodetic data, and (e) the first results of data analysis

    Description: Here we report the results of the analysis of a GPS velocity field in the Umbria–Marche Apennines (central Italy) obtained from the integration of diverse geodetic networks. The velocity field obtained shows a high degree of consistency both spatially and in terms of comparison with independent information, despite the limited time span of some GPS stations. Starting from the velocity field we derive a continuous strain rate field applying a spline interpolation technique which provide a smooth estimate of the deformation field. The main feature of the resulting strain rate field is a continuous high (N50 nanostrain/year) strain rate belt coincident with the area of largest historical and instrumental seismic release. The model directions of the principal axes agree with geological and seismological information indicating NE–SW extension. We transform the strain rate field into geodetic moment rate using the Kostrov formula to evaluate the potential seismic activity of the region and compare it with actual seismic release in the last 720 years from MwN5.5 earthquakes. This comparison highlights a large possible deficit in the seismic release with respect to the overall potential seismic activity, particularly concentrated in the northern part of the study area. This discrepancy can be resolved with either a large amount of seismicity to be released in the near future or significant aseismic slip and deformation.

    Description: To investigate the kinematics of the Adriatic region we integrate continuous and episodic GPS measurements and ${M_w} 〉 4.5$ earthquake slip vectors selected from the Regional Centroid Moment Tensor (RCMT) catalogue. Coherent motion of GPS sites in the Po Valley, in Apulia and in the Hyblean Plateau allows us to estimate geodetically constrained angular velocities for these regions. The predictions of the GPS-inferred angular velocities are compared with the earthquake slip vectors, showing that the seismically-expressed deformation at the microplate boundaries is consistent with the observed geodetic motion. The remarkable consistency between geodetic, seismological and geological evidence of active tectonics, suggests that active deformation in the Central Adriatic is controlled by the relative motion between the Adria and Apulia microplates. The microplates angular rotation rates are then compared with the rotation rates calculated with a simple block model supporting the hypotheses (1) that Apulia forms a single microplate with the Ionian Sea and possibly with the Hyblean region and (2) that Adria and Apulia rotate in such a way as to accommodate the Eurasia-Nubia relative motion. We suggest that the present-day microplate configuration follows a recent fragmentation of the Adriatic promontory that during the Neogene rigidly transferred the Africa motion to the orogenic belts that now surround the Adriatic region.

    Description: Here we describe the horizontal velocities of continuous GPS stations in the Calabrian Arc (CA) and surrounding regions. The appropriate reference frame to evaluate the crustal motion of the CA is considered by assessing the internal deformation and the relative motion of the crustal blocks in the foreland of the Apennines␣Ionian␣Maghrebides subduction system. We propose that the motion of CA rela- tive to the subducting Ionian lower plate is most properly assessed by minimizing the GPS velocities in Apulia. In this reference frame the significant ␣2 mm/yr southeast- ward motion of the stations on the Ionian flank of the CA shows that the arc is still moving towards the trench in agreement with the observations of active shortening in the Ioanian wedge. This southeastward migration is associated to 1.4 ± 0.3 mm/yr E␣W extension of the forearc in northern Calabria, comparable with the seismic strain averaged in the last 500 years. The limited subaerial exposure decreases the resolution on locking of the subduction interface but the distribution and direction of crustal extension along the CA impose important constraints on geodynamic interpreta- tions of the area.

    Description: The large increase of continuous gps sites occurred in the recent years in the Central Mediterranean plate boundary zone offers the opportunity to study in detail the present-day kinematics in this actively de- forming plate boundary zone. The amount of available cgps data from scientific and commercial networks in the Italian region currently reaches more than 350 cgps stations, including more than 130 sites from the ring network (http://ring.gm.ingv.it), deployed by the Isti- tuto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia with high quality gps monuments and co-located with broad- band or very broad band seismometers. gps ambiguity resolution of such a large amount of data asks for a sin- gle and self-consistent processing method, in order to avoid the need of dividing the whole network in sever- al clusters as many of the scientific gps processing codes request and to maximize the processing time speed. The ambizap gps processing algorithm (Blewitt 2008), used to obtain daily ambiguity-fixed network so- lutions allows for a rapid and multiple reanalysis of large regional networks such the one presented in this work, that is composed by more than 580 gps stations. In this presentation we highlights some of the numer- ous scientific motivations behind this project, ranging from the definition of strain distribution and micro- plate kinematics within the plate boundary, to the geodynamic implications for the evolution of the Cala- brian Arc and Aeolian Islands.

    Description: Since 2004, an important technological infrastructure has been created in Italy by INGV in order to investigate active tectonics targets. A Continuous GPS network constituted by about 130 stations has been deployed all over Italy. The development and the realization of a stable GPS monumentation, the integration with other classical seismological instruments and the choice of both satellite and internet data transmission make this network one of the most innovative and reliable CGPS networks in the world. The development of the CGPS network has been accompanied by a technologically advanced development of all the aspects related to the data acquisition and the data information mining: a database and a SIT. Based on the recent techniques of Knowledge Management, the database has been developed to manage the data and the data information of all the sites of the RING network, thus allowing us to centralize information in a single common data bank and to create an unique service of access point to the data from different remote sites by internet connections. The SIT has been developed to be fully integrated with the Knowledge Management technology and it is aimed to synthesize and to display in a geographic interface the information of the RING sites. This work has been integrated with all other spatial data, such as topographic and geo-thematic maps, geological, seismological and seismo-tectonic databases. In this work, the technological aspects of the SIT of the RING network will be detailed and some examples of thematic maps will be shown.
