    Description: The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is an Italian research institution with focus on earth sciences. Moreover, the INGV is the operational center for seismic surveillance and earthquake monitoring in Italy and is a part of the civil protection system as a center of expertise on seismic, volcanic, and tsunami risks.INGV operates the Italian National Seismic Network and other networks at national scale and is a primary node of the European Integrated Data Archive for archiving and distributing strong‐motion and weak‐motion seismic recordings. In the control room in Rome, INGV staff performs seismic surveillance and tsunami warning services; in Catania and Naples, the control rooms are devoted to volcanic surveillance. Volcano monitoring includes locating earthquakes in the regions around the Sicilian (Etna, Eolian Islands, and Pantelleria) and the Campanian (Vesuvius, Campi Fregrei, and Ischia) active volcanoes. The tsunami warning is based on earthquake location and magnitude (M) evaluation for moderate to large events in the Mediterranean region and also around the world. The technologists of the institute tuned the data acquisition system to accomplish, in near real time, automatic earthquake detection, hypocenter and magnitude determination, and evaluation of several seismological products (e.g., moment tensors and ShakeMaps). Database archiving of all parametric results is closely linked to the existing procedures of the INGV seismic surveillance environment and surveillance procedures. Earthquake information is routinely revised by the analysts of the Italian seismic bulletin. INGV provides earthquake information to the Department of Civil Protection (Dipartimento di Protezione Civile) to the scientific community and to the public through the web and social media. We aim at illustrating different aspects of earthquake monitoring at INGV: (1) network operations; (2) organizational structure and the hardware and software used; and (3) communication, including recent developments and planned improvements.

    Description: We used continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements to infer the fault geometry and the amount of coseismic slip associated to the August 24, 2016 Mw 6 Amatrice earthquake. We realized a three-dimensional coseismic displacement field by combining different geodetic solutions generated by three independent analyses of the raw GPS observations. The coseismic deformation field described in this work aims at representing a “consensus” solution that minimizes the systematic biases potentially present in the individual geodetic solutions. Because of the limited number of stations available we modeled the measured coseismic displacements using a uniform slip model, deriving the geometry and kinematics of the causative fault, finding good agreement between our geodetically derived fault plane and other seismological and geological observations.

    Description: We used High-Rate sampling Global Positioning System (HRGPS) data from 52 permanent stations to retrieve the coseismic dynamic displacements related to the 2016 August 24 Mw 6.0 Amatrice earthquake. The HRGPS position time series (named hereinafter "GPSgrams") were obtained with two different analysis strategies of the raw GPS measurements (Precise Point Positioning [PPP] and Double-Difference [DD] positioning approaches using the Gipsy-Oasis II and the TRACK (GAMIT/GLOBK) software, respectively). These GPSgrams show RMS accuracies mostly within 0.3 cm and, for each site, an agreement within 0.5 cm between the two solutions. By using cross-correlation technique, the GPSgrams are also compared to the doubly-integrated strong motion data at sites where the different instrumentations are co-located in order to recognize in the GPSgrams the seismic waves movements. The high values (mostly greater than 0.6) of the cross-correlation functions between these differently-generated waveforms (GPSgrams and the SM displacement time-histories) at the co-located sites confirm the ability of GPS in providing reliable waveforms for seismological applications.

    Description: The collision between Africa and Eurasia is associated with a complex pattern of deformation within the plate boundary zone, with subduction of oceanic fragments, crustal extension along formerly contracting orogenic belts and back-arc spreading in Tertiary basins. First-order scientific problems regarding the strain accumulation along seismogenic structures, the present-day activity of the Calabrian slab, the existence of rigid blocks within the plate boundary and the regional crust and upper mantle structures are still awaiting for a better understanding. To solve those open questions, the CESIS project, established in 2002 by the INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), is deploying 60 permanent CGPS stations in Southern Italy. All the sites will be equipped with Leica GRX 1200 Pro GPS receivers acquiring at 1Hz sampling interval for seismic source analysis. The data are then transmitted at 30s sampling interval by means of a satellite system (VSAT) to two acquisition centres, located in Rome and in Irpinia. Furthermore, the network sites are integrated either with broad band and very broad band seismometers or accelerometers to improve the monitoring of the background seismicity in Southern Appennines seismic belts and to better constrain the geometry of the seismogenic structures. The satellite data transmission and the integration with seismic instruments makes this network one of the most innovative CGPS networks in Europe. New developments on the GPS monumentation have also been carried out. The research activity resulting from the data coming from the CESIS network will thus exploit the full range of temporal and spatial frequencies that characterize plate boundary deformation, allowing a large range of scientific problems, ranging from earthquake source studies to regional plate kinematics, to be tackled. Some of the most intriguing targets concern (a) the study of present activity of the Calabrian slab and its associated crustal deformation, (b) the southern boundary of the Adriatic block (a rigid microplate whose existence have been proposed on the basis of seismicity distribution, earthquake slip-vectors, and space geodesy), (c) the study of strain build-up along seismogenic faults and (d) the processes which allow the deformation to be localised or distributed on the fault systems. We present (a) a new prototype of short-drilled braced GPS monumentation, (b) the technical description of geodetic data acquisition, (c) the flow and archiving of geodetic data, and (e) the first results of data analysis

    Description: Geographic data sharing and collection are becoming key activities among geological and geophysical studies worldwide, and the recent increase of infrastructures is demanding to scientific and civil community an effort to manage and disseminate their products as efficiently as possible. With this effort in mind, INGV began some years ago to collaborate with civilian and commercial subjects in order to promote the integration and sharing of data from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) networks existing in Italy. Since 2004, INGV deployed a permanent, integrated and real-time monitoring CGPS network (RING, Rete Integrata Nazionale GPS, http://ring.gm.ingv.it), which is now constituted by about 170 stations all over Italy (Selvaggi et al., 2006; Avallone et al, 2010). All stations have high quality GPS monuments (D’Ambrosio, 2007; Minichiello et al., 2010) and most of them are co-located with broadband or very broadband seismometers and strong motion sensors. This scientific network is aimed to monitor crustal deformation in Italy in order to study earthquake deformation processes, from interseismic strain accumulation to rupture processes, and is giving an effective contribute to Italian Civil Protection for seismic hazard monitoring. Moreover, in the last years, local Authorities, nation-wide industries and other scientific institutions started to establish GPS/GNSS networks all over the Italian territory mainly for cartographic and positioning purposes. More than 500 CGPS stations are actually operating in Italy. The INGV acquire and analyze most of these networks, promoting at the same time actions to integrate the RING with the ones managed by regional and national data providers (D’Anastasio et al., 2010). The Regione Calabria in 2009 planned and established a network of 17 CGPS stations for cartographic and civil protection purposes covering the Calabria region (hereafter ReCal network). The CGPS stations are good quality monument connected in real time and, in the next future, will start to furnish to the civil community a positioning service. In order to share the RING and ReCal data and relative products, a synergy between the CNT-INGV (Centro Nazionale Terremoti) and the Regione Calabria started in 2011. An official agreement between the two institutions state the sharing of CGPS data, the collaboration between CNT-INGV and Regione Calabria to test the efficiency and the positioning service of ReCal network, and the contribution of ReCal network to scientific monitoring of Calabria, one of the most seismically active region in Italy. Moreover, this agreement included also the commissioning of the ReCal network and of its positioning services performed by CNT-INGV. Figure 1 shows the GPS and GNSS stations currently operating in Italy. In the inset it could be noticed how the RING and ReCal networks are integrated in order to have the best spatial coverage of the Calabrian territory. We will present the first results of the agreement between INGV-CNT and Regione Calabria, and of the commissioning of ReCal network. Moreover, we will focus on the infrastructure already existing and developed by CNT-INGV to manage data acquisition, storage, distribution and access (Cecere, 2007; Cardinale et al., 2010; Falco, 2006; 2008; Memmolo et al., 2010; Pignone et al., 2009). INGV developed dedicated facilities including new softwares for data acquisition and a web-based collaborative environment for management of data and metadata. These facilities are used to manage data coming from the RING as well as from agreements with ReCal and other CGPS networks in Italy. We believe that this infrastructure represents an important reality in the framework of GNSS data sharing development in Italy.
