Notes: For fluid-solid reactions, a random pore model is developed which allows for arbitrary pore size distributions in the reacting solid. The model can represent the behavior of a system that shows a maximum in reaction rate as well as one that does not, and it identifies an optimal pore structure for either of such systems. It is demonstrated that the new model subsumes several earlier treatments as special cases. By comparison with the grain model, a relationship is derived between the effective grain shape factor and a pore structure parameter defined here. When the variance of the pore size distribution is effectively zero, the new results approach those predicted by the Petersen (1957) model over a large range of conversions. The char gasification data of Hashimoto et al. (1979) are shown to produce correlations consistent with the expectations of the new model.

Notes: A model is derived for solids mixing and material transport in a continucus flow rotary dryer or reactor. Detailed analysis of the particle motions in the turnover process provides an opportunity to apply well-known reactor models to several subregions and to relate the overall results to different design geometries and operating conditions. The essential parameters of the model are the number of stages, the volume fractions of mixed flow and plug flow in each stage, the recycle ratio and the bypass ratio.

Notes: In this paper we describe the operation of a rheometer that is capable of measuring the viscoelastic response of a polymer melt in a biaxial or planar extensional flow field under circumstances wherein the deformation history can be varied in an arbitrary manner. The principal feature of this rheometer is the use of a closed loop feedback system to control the inflation of a flat, molten polymer sheet clamped around its periphery. The feedback system is especially designed so that either stress or strain can be used as the reference point, thus permitting the deformation history to be varied arbitrarily. Illustrative data are presented on the viscoelastic response of a molten acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer subjected to a planar extensional flow for the following deformation histories: constant stress, constant strain, constant strain rate, oscillatory stress and oscillatory strain.

Description: The wideband electric power measurement related topics of electronic wattmeter calibration and specification are discussed. Tested calibration techniques are described in detail. Analytical methods used to determine the bandwidth requirements of instrumentation for switching circuit waveforms are presented and illustrated with examples from electric vehicle type applications. Analog multiplier wattmeters, digital wattmeters and calculating digital oscilloscopes are compared. The instrumentation characteristics which are critical to accurate wideband power measurement are described.

Description: The reflectance of naturally occurring surfaces is measured from a twin engine Cessna 402B aircraft both spectrally (0.29-0.40 micron) with a compact double monochromator and broadband (0.29-1.2 micron) with a UV enhanced photodiode. The measurement system, which is computer controlled and electrically isolated from the aircraft, consists of upward and downward looking hemispheric diffusers, filters, a rotating 90 deg mirror, a focusing lens, and a double monochromator/PMT or the UV photodiode. Measurements are taken at several altitudes enabling the empirical determination of backscatter and attenuation effects on the reflectance. The results are presented for pine forest canopy, green farmland, open ocean, and brown farmland as a function of wavelength and altitude.

Description: A new method for the in situ detection of nonfluorescing molecular species is proposed: photofragmentation-laser induced fluorescence (PF-LIF). In this approach, the species to be detected is first laser photolyzed at a wavelength lambda (1), producing one or more vibrationally excited photofragments. Before vibrational relaxation occurs, one of these photofragments is pumped into a bonding excited state by a second laser pulse centered at wavelength lambda (2). Fluorescence is sampled at a wavelength lambda (3), where lambda (3) is less then lambda (2) and lambda (1). This pumping configuration thus permits massive discrimination against Rayleigh and Raman scattering as well as white noise fluorescence from the laser wavelengths lambda (1) and lambda (2). The technique should be both highly sensitive and selective for numerous atmospheric trace gases. Specific sampling schemes for detecting NO2, NO3, and HNO2 are proposed. Various noise sources and chemical interferences are discussed. Specific calculations that estimate the sensitivity of the PF-LIF system for detecting NO2, NO3, and HNO2 are given.

Description: The rapid chemical analysis of particles in aerosols can be accomplished using an apparatus which produces a controlled stream of individual particles from an environment, and another apparatus which vaporizes and ionizes the particles moving in free flight, for analysis by a mass spectrometer. The device for producing the stream of particles includes a capillary tube through which the air with suspended particles moves, a skimmer with a small opening spaced from an end of the capillary tube to receive particles passing through the tube, and a vacuum pump which removes air from between the tube and skimmer and creates an inflow of air and particles through the tube. The particles passing through the skimmer opening can be simultaneously vaporized and ionized while in free flight, by a laser beam of sufficient intensity that is directed across the path of the free flying particles.
