    Notes: An experimental and analytical study was made to determine how well the material functions, derived from the Spriggs four-constant viscoelastic model, could describe the rheological properties of polymer melts. Viscosity and elasticity of selected polymer melts were experimentally determined in the rotational and oscillatory modes using a Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. The Spriggs model was chosen for study because of its success in describing experimental data for polymer solutions and because of its uniqueness in combining results from molecular theory with results from the theories associated with continuum mechanics. It was found that the model provides a good description of the rheological data for polymer melts and that some of the model parameters depend upon the molecular characteristics of the polymer. Since this model contains a small number of well defined constants, it should be useful in developing dimensionless engineering correlations for the complex flows encountered in processes of industrial importance. Deviations between the theoretical and experimental results are discussed and deficiencies of the model noted.

    Notes: The motion of a single rigid sphere entrained in a glycerine-water solution flowing downward through a cylindrical tube has been investigated throughout a range of particle Reynolds numbers of 6.0 to 120.0, tube Reynolds numbers of 208 to 890, and particle-to-tube diameter ratios of 0.120 to 0.190. Trajectories of the sphere, calculated for various particle Reynolds numbers by using the Rubinow-Keller expression for the transverse force, were found to agree satisfactorily with experimentally determined trajectories when the particle Reynolds number was below 40.0. In all cases the sphere was observed to migrate to the axis of the tube. At the lower particle Reynolds numbers the sphere approached the axis asymptotically, whereas at the higher particle Reynolds numbers the sphere oscillated across the axis of the tube one or more times during migration. All observations were made with spheres which were less dense than the fluid, the density difference being as high as 10% of the fluid density.

    Notes: Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted on the mass transfer rates which occur during the continuous devolatilization of bubble-free polymeric solutions in a corotating twin-screw extruder. Experimental measurements of the mass transfer rates, when reported in terms of the product of the individual liquid phase mass transfer coefficient and the surface area for mass transfer per unit volume of empty extruder, were found to correlate well with screw speed in accordance with the predictions of a model based on penetration theory. It is shown, however, that significant differences exist between the measured and predicted values for the rates of mass transfer, which leads to the conclusion that the surface area for mass transfer is substantially smaller than the value computed on the basis that continuous films are formed on the surfaces of the screws and the barrel wall.

    Notes: The fluid motion at a free surface advancing into a mold or duct is appreciably different from its steady state behavior in well-developed flow; this affects the residence time distribution and structure of macromolecular fluids as they are frozen in injection molding processes. In this work such motion is treated numerically and measured precisely for Newtonian fluids. While the three-phase contact line represents a special problem conceptually and analytically, a very simple algorithm is seen to represent the fluid motion in this region accurately.Good agreement is found over wide ranges of the governing dimensionless groups (the Reynolds, Jeffrey, and capillary numbers). Since viscous forces are dominant under the circumstances studied, this finding is not surprising but it confirms the applicability of the numerical methods developed herein to the modeling of these flows under conditions of actual interest. As a result, simulations may be made with confidence to predict flow patterns encountered in practice but difficult to reproduce in laboratory experiments.

    Notes: The flow of a viscous liquid into a bed filled with a regular array of cylinders was observed experimentally and simulated numerically. Viscous forces were always dominant, as is expected to be the case in many actual resin transfer molding operations.Excellent agreement on the shape of the free surface was found between experiment and simulation over the full experimental range. The work accordingly validates a very simple algorithm for representing the surface motion of a fluid at its contact line with a solid surface, and extends its use to surfaces with smaller radii of curvature than considered previously. Consequently, this algorithm is expected to be valid for fluid flow into any irregularly shaped empty domain and to be useful in molding operations in inferring the presence of voiding, and of molecular orientations and conformations adjacent to fibers or other solids.

    Notes: An experimental study of the inflation of a thin rectangular polymer sheet has been conducted to determine whether this technique can be used to measure the planar extensional viscosity of bulk polymers. Viscosities were determined at various extensional strain rates using an undiluted polyisobutylene of high molecular weight. Measurements were also made on the dynamic shear viscosity using orthogonal geometry and compared with “normalized” values of the planar extensional viscosity assuming equivalency of $\sqrt {\Pi _e} $ the second invariant of the extensional strain rate tensor, and the frequency of rotation ω. Industrial fabrication operations where the planar extensional viscosity is expected to play a role include vacuum forming of large rectangular sheets whose length-to-width ratio is large and in injection molds having a center-gated cavity.

    Notes: The isothermal flow of a Newtonian liquid in a co-rotating twin screw extruder having screw elements with three tips has been analyzed when the effect of the intermeshing zone on flow can be neglected. It was found that values for four dimensionless parameters must be specified in order to obtain a unique relationship between the dimensionless axial pressure gradient and the dimensionless volumetric flow rate. These parameters included the number of screw tips, the helix angle, the ratio of the clearance to the screw radius, and the ratio of the distance between screw centers-to the screw radius Values for the dimensionless throughput and pressure gradient were computed for a range of helix angles at fixed values for all other dimensionless parameters. Shape factors were also computed and it was found that the shape-factor for pressure How is substantially less than that for drag flow. Asymptotic values for both these factors at large values of the channel width (large helix angles) were found to be less than unity.
