Description: Using 10.1 × 109J/ψ events produced by the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) at a center-of-mass energy $$ sqrt{s} $$ s = 3.097 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector, we present a search for the rare semi-leptonic decay J/ψ → D−e+νe + c.c. No excess of signal above background is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction ℬ(J/ψ → D−e+νe + c. c.)

Notes: Abstract The anti-tumour component (Fraction A) found in the culture filtrates of a local mushroom, Tricholoma sp. (strain STC20-T1), was purified using DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography and Sepharose CL-4B gel filtration. Of its two purified sub-fractions, A-1 and A-2, only the latter showed anti-tumor activity. When Fraction A-2 was treated with cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide and chloroform/butanol (24:1, v/v), it behaved as a proteinbound polysaccharide, with a molecular mass estimated to be 154 kDa by gel filtration. It contained 40% polysaccharide, which consisted of fucose, galactose, glucose, arabinose and mannose, and 30.5% protein, the amino-acid composition of which was determined. Fraction A-2 could inhibit the growth of Sarcoma-180 implanted in mice intraperitoneally and subcutaneously, with no sign of toxicity, at a dose of 20 mg/kg.day for 10 days.

Notes: Abstract In-situ X-ray topography has been used to provide the first clear demonstration of slip transmission through a grain boundary in hexagonal ice. Although the ice was deformed under creep conditions, the relative orientation of the grains and the orientation of the grain boundary with respect to the loading direction discouraged grain boundary sliding and, thus, suppressed dislocation nucleation at the grain boundary. This particular geometrical arrangement is rarely encountered, suggesting that slip transmission through grain boundaries in ice is a rare event.

Notes: Summary Dielectric permittivity and loss have been measured over the frequency range 10-2 Hz-10 kHz between 100 K and 350 K for samples of 50/50 mixtures of each of two hyperbranched polyesters, one five-generation hydroxy functional (5G-OH) and one threegeneration alkyl-terminated polymer (3G), with dielectrically inactive linear polyethylene. The thermal transitions of the hyperbranched polymers were studied with differential scanning calorimetry. Three relaxation transitions were found in 5G-OH: α, the glass-rubber transition and two subglass processes denoted β and γ showing Arrhenius temperature dependence both with an activation energy of 96±2kJ mol-1. The low temperature process could be assigned to motions of the terminal hydroxyl groups whereas β is due to reorientation of the ester groups. Sample 3G showed only a glass transition and one subglass process being assigned to reorientation of the ester groups. The high activation energy (202 kJ mol-1) of this process indicates that the ester groups are highly constrained in this polymer.

Notes: Abstract  Studies of allelic variations at six isozyme loci revealed genetic diversity of 380 East Asian accessions of the Barley Core Collection. Genetic variation was found in both cultivars and landraces in different regions. Allelic variations at the Aco-1 and Aco-2 loci were detected for East Asian barley for the first time. Moreover, the Aco-1 locus displayed the highest genetic diversity among the six loci assayed. Indian cultivars showed the highest diversity, followed by Korean and Chinese cultivars. Landraces from Bhutan and Nepal showed the lowest diversity. Cultivars had generally higher diversity than landraces within as well as among regions. The cluster analysis of genetic identity showed that all landraces from different countries can be placed in one group; the cultivars from Japan, India and Korea each form independent groups. Gpi-1 Gu, Pgd-1 Tj, Aco-1 Si, Ndh-2 D and Aco-2 A were rare alleles found in only a few accessions of 6-rowed barley. The Pgd-2 Tn allele was very rare in East Asian accessions.

Notes: Abstract Using the rice salt-tolerant mutant 20 as material, a cDNA library was constructed and two salt-inducible clones, SIR5.5 and SIR8.1, were isolated by differential screening. Homology analysis revealed that the two clones together constituted a chimeric rbcL which encoded a truncated large subunit of Rubisco with 337 amino-acids, plus 64 amino-acids of unknown origin. The expressions of both the normal and the chimeric locus appeared to be developmentally regulated and salt-inducible in shoots of the salt-tolerant mutant 20 and its original variety 77–170. In roots, their expressions were salt-inducible in the salt-tolerant mutant 20 whereas no, or only premature, forms were present in the salt-treated original variety 77–170. Higher concentrations of salt reduced the expressions of both normal rbcL and the chimeric locus. ABA showed no effect on their expression.

Notes: Abstract The generalized Faddeev-Yakubovsky equation is derived for the four-body system where three-body forces are included. There result twenty-two coupled equations which, in the case of four identical spinless particles, can be reduced to three. In addition, by using the hyperspherical-harmonics expansion in momentum space, as suggested by Dzhibuti and his collaborators, and the Raynal-Revai transformation, it is possible to write these as one-dimensional coupled integral equations. Numerical solutions are straightforward and, for sample potentials, suggest relatively fast convergence in the number of harmonics required. Results obtained so far offer fresh hope that this method may provide a means for quick and accurate computation of four-body scattering quantities.

Notes: Abstract The Faddeev and Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations for three- and four-body systems are solved by applying the hyperspherical-harmonics expansion to them in momentum space. This coupling of two popular approaches to the few-body problem together with the use of the so-called Raynal-Revai transformation, which relates hyperspherical functions, allows the few-body equations to be written as one-dimensional coupled integral equations. Numerical solutions for these are achieved through standard matrix methods; these are made straightforward, because a second transformation renders potential multipoles easily calculable. For sample potentials and a restricted size of matrix in each case, the binding energies extracted match those previously obtained in solving the Schrödinger equation through the hyperspherical-harmonics expansion in coordinate space.

Notes: Abstract: The magnetic transport properties have been measured for La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3 ( 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.14) system. It was found that the transition temperature T p almost linearly moves to higher temperature as H increases. Electron spin resonance confirms that above T p , there exist ferromagnetic clusters. From the magnetic polaron point of view, the shift of T p vs. H was understood, and it was estimated that the size of the magnetic polaron is of 9.7 ∼ 15.4 Å which is consistent with the magnetic correlation length revealed by the small-angle neutron-scattering technique. The transport properties at temperatures higher than T p conform to the variable-range hopping mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. We explore the effects of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) on weak signal transmission in a noisy neural network. We first consider the network where an ensemble of independent neurons, which are subjected to a common weak signal, are connected in parallel to a single postsynaptic neuron via excitatory synapses. STDP can make the signal transmission more efficient, and this effect is more prominent when the presynaptic activities exhibit some correlations. We further consider a two-layer network where there are only couplings between two layers and find that postsynaptic neurons can fire synchronously under suitable conditions. Both the reliability and timing precision of neuronal firing in the output layer are remarkably improved with STDP. These results indicate that STDP can play crucial roles in information processing in nervous systems.
