Notes: Abstract Reliable Broadcast is a mechanism by which a processor in a distributed system disseminates a value to all other processors in the presence of both communication and processor failures. Protocols to achieve Reliable Broadcast are at the heart of most fault-tolerant applications. We characterize the execution time of Reliable Broadcast protocols as a function of the communication model. This model includes familiar communication structures such as fully-connected point-to-point graphs, linear chains, rings, broadcast networks (such as Ethernet) and buses. We derive a parameterized protocol that implements Reliable Broadcast for any member within this class. We obtain lower bound results that show the optimality of our protocols. The lower bound results identify a time complexity gap between systems where processors may only fail to send messages, and systems where processors may fail both to send and to receive messages. The tradeoffs that our results reveal between performance, resiliency and network cost offer many new alternatives previously not considered in designing fault-tolerant systems.

Notes: Summary A previous model of the mechanisms of flow through epithelia was modified and extended to include hydrostatic and osmotic pressures in the cells and in the peritubular capillaries. The differential equations for flow and concentration in each region of the proximal tubule were derived. The equations were solved numerically by a finite difference method. The principal conclusions are: (i) Cell NaCl concentration remains essentially isotonic over the pressure variations considered; (ii) channel NaCl concentration varies only a few mosmol from isotonicity, and the hydrostatic and osmotic pressure differences across the cell wall are of the same order of magnitude; (iii) both reabsorbate osmolality and pressure-induced flow are relatively insensitive to the geometry of the system; (iv) a strong equilibrating mechanism exists in the sensitivity of the reabsorbate osmolality to luminal osmolality; this mechanism is far more significant than any other parameter change.

Notes: Abstract Occultations and eclipses from ancient times down to the present are analysed to determine changes in the length of the day. By subtracting the expected tidal contribution from the observed changes, the non-tidal variations are obtained. The non-tidal varations are shown to occur on time-scales of decades and millennia.

Notes: Abstract Transient solutions are developed for the buildup of a concentration gradient in the single loop solute cycling model of the renal medulla. The “pump” from ascending limb to descending limb is considered in both unsaturated and completely saturated modes of operation. Both analytic solutions and semianalytic solutions obtained from inverting Laplace transforms are considered. The classic representation of concentration buildup by the multiplication process is compared with calculated profiles. The “single effect” is found to vary both in time and space.

Notes: Summary 1. Photoreceptors ofMusca were superfused with solutions containing either fluoride (F−), vanadate (VO 3 − ), or one of the GTP analogs GPPNHP and GTPγS. These agents have been reported to generate discrete voltage fluctuations (bumps) when injected intoLimulus photoreceptors. All four agents produced noisy depolarizations inMusca photoreceptors when added to the perfusate. 2. The effects of all four agents were reversible. GPPNHP induced dark noise only after exposure to light, whereas VO 3 − and F− did not require light for their effect. 3. Although individual bumps were too small to be resolved, the power spectra of voltage noise induced by these agents resembled closely those of light-induced noise. 4. F−-induced noise was reduced by adaptation following strong illumination. As F−-induced depolarization increased beyond 6 mV the voltage noise diminished, probably due in part to adaptation. With increasing F−-induced depolarization the power spectrum of F− noise changed shape slightly. Part of this change was probably due to adaptation, and it was similar to but smaller than corresponding changes in the spectrum of light-induced noise. 5. Analysis of F−-induced noise indicated that it was composed of bumps which, though similar in time course, were not identical to light-induced bumps. At small depolarizations, the F−-induced bumps were calculated to be 3–5 times smaller than light bumps and were less strongly affected by adaptation. Although the calculated duration of light-induced bumps diminished as intensity increased, the duration of F−-induced bumps showed no such dependence on depolarization, and was equal to that of light bumps in moderately dim light. Moreover light- and F-induced noise did not summate in the manner expected if they were indistinguishable to the photoreceptor. 6. In addition to noise, we saw other effects as well. The earliest effect of VO 3 − was a smooth depolarization which may have been due to this ion's role as a Na/K pump inhibitor. In experiments with some of these agents strong light caused a wave of afterdepolarization with no increase in noise. This effect occurred under a variety of conditions, however, and was not specific to the agents used. 7. F−, VO 3 − GPPNHP and GTPγS appear to generate noise inMusca photoreceptors through a common effect on the pathway of phototransduction. In the case of F− in particular, chemically induced bumps are smaller and less affected by adaptation than those produced by light. We discuss possible mechanisms of action consistent with these findings.

Notes: Summary Coverslips coated with rat-tail collagen dried at 37°C were placed in a hot-air sterilizing oven at 160°C for 2 h. The resulting transparent sterile film was found to be a useful multipurpose substrate for cell culture and for subsequent histological sectioning.

Notes: Abstract The DNA coding for 28 S and 18 S ribosomal RNA, including the spacer regions, has been isolated from calf (Bos taurus) thymus gland. The method used included shearing of the total DNA to a highly homogeneous size population, selective heat denaturation and S 1 nuclease treatment to remove single stranded DNA. Repeated centrifugation on density gradients yields a 140-fold purified rDNA fraction with a GC content of 61.2%. Eco RI nuclease cleaves this DNA into two fragments of 16.4 and 4.9×106 daltons. Hybridization of these fragments with 28 S and 18 S rRNA shows that the 28 S coding sequence is located mostly on the 4.9×106 dalton fragment, while both the 16.4 and 4.9×106 dalton fragments contain the 18 S sequence. The data indicate that the ribosomal RNA gene has a repeat unit of 21.3×106 daltons which includes a nontranscribed spacer of about 12.5×106 daltons.

Notes: Abstract Two recent studies using tree aggregations to analyze forest age-structure stability and past forest structure are flawed. A better understanding of aggregation dynamics is needed before aggregation analysis is used in forest management.
