Notes: Summary Intracellular records from three muscles in the gastropod mollusc Helisoma trivolvis are described and correlated with extracellular electromyograms and tension recordings. These data are then used to formulate criteria for the identification of motoneurons in the central nervous system. 1. Individual muscle fibers in the three muscles studied were small in diameter (less than 10 μ), arranged in a parallel fashion, and heavily invested by connective tissue (Fig. 1). 2. Initial identification of neurons in the central nervous system as excitatory motoneurons to particular muscles was based on a number of criteria: a) each action potential in that neuron was followed by an extracellular electromyogram response in the muscle of relatively constant latency; b) in the case of the posterior jugalis, the action potentials of the motoneuron accounted for all extracellularly recorded activity in the muscle during normal function (Fig. 3) ; and c) procion yellow dye injections and antidromic stimulation showed that the axons of such neurons leave the CNS in nerve trunks shown by electrical stimulation to contain the excitatory axons to specific muscles. 3. A single basic pattern of muscle innervation, which was comparable to the vertebrate motor unit, was observed. The posterior jugalis appears to be controlled by a single motoneuron whereas the columellar muscle appears to be under the control of a number of motoneurons. Intracellular recordings gave no indication of multiple innervation of individual muscle fibers. High gain intracellular records revealed miniature excitatory junctional potentials but inhibitory junctional potentials were never observed in any of the muscles studied.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Blackwell's studies concerning comparisons of experiments yield a concept of sufficiency which in general is not equivalent to the popular notion of a sufficient statistic made precise byHalmos andSavage. In fact regularity conditions can be given under which the two concepts coincide. Properties ofMarkov kernels and ofBlackwell's sufficiency relation are examined first. After the proof of the equivalence theorem counterexamples are presented to indicate the significance of the regularity conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: The Base Catalysed Reaction of Active Methylene Compounds with Isocyanates, 1. Synthesis of Barbituric Acid-5-carboxylates and -5-carboxamidesMalonic ester (1) reacts with methyl and phenyl isocyanate in the presence of triethylamine at room temperature to give the carbamoylmalonic esters 2a, b, whereas, under reflux, the hitherto unknown barbituric acid-5-carboxylic esters 3 are formed. With 1-naphthyl isocyanate cyclization to 3 occurs without heating. Similarly, by refluxing 2b with methyl isocyanate in triethylamine, a barbituric acid-carboxylic ester is obtained. In contrast, the reaction of 2a with isocyanates under similar conditions results in the formation of 5-carbamoylbarbituric acids 4. A compound of this series is also obtained by reacting malonanilic ester (6) with isocyanate in triethylamine.

Description / Table of Contents: Ionexchange on Porous GlassesPorous alkali-boron-silicate glasses show the following sequence of coefficients of the ionexchange-selectivity: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Ti}^{\rm + } 〉 {\rm Ag}^{\rm + } 〉 {\rm K}^{\rm + } 〉 {\rm Na}^{\rm + } 〉 {\rm Li}^{\rm + } . $$\end{document} The degree of ionexchange for divalent ions is only very little. The ionexchange capacity is influenced by the degree of phase-separation of the original glasses and has the origin in BOH groups. The energies of activation for the ionexchange reactions are 10.6-11.8 kcal/mol.

Notes: Synchronized cells of Tetrahymena pyriformis strain GL-C were exposed to cycloheximide (CHI) (0.2 μg per ml) from 40 to 140 minutes after the end of the heat synchronizing treatment. Recovery takes place during this treatment (Frankel, 1970). The CHI was washed out at 140 minutes. At various times after washout dividing cells were isolated in micro-drops under oil, and one daughter was transferred to a test drop containing CHI (0.2 μ per ml). The generation time of both daughters was recorded, and the “percent prolongation” of generation time brought about by the test exposure of one cell to CHI was computed for each cell-pair. This procedure was carried out for groups of cell-pairs at different times after the end of the CHI pretreatment. Comparable tests were performed with two control series, one which had not previously been exposed to CHI and another for which CHI was present continuously. Comparison of the prolongation observed in control and experimental series demonstrated that cells which have earlier undergone recovery in CHI gradually become resensitized following washout of the drug. Cells progressively lose most of their original resistance in a period of somewhat over three cell generations; however, a small but significant fraction of this resistance is still retained seven to eight generations after the CHI pretreatment.

Description / Table of Contents: On the chemically thermal modification of gelatinous silica with B2O3The chemically thermal modification of gelatinous silica with boron oxide was studied in dependence on the quantity of impregnated boron oxide, on time, and temperature of the treatment. A. condensation mechanism is discussed on the basis of structure variation of the modification samples.
