Notes: Kinetic equations have been developed for polymers that decompose by the zipper mechanism. The usual assumption of steady state kinetics has not been made. Plots of the fraction decomposed α, as a function of time demonstrate a variety of patterns depending upon the relative values of the fraction k1, of chains becoming activated per second and the fraction k2 of an activated chain that decomposes per second.

Notes: Equations derived on the basis of a zipper mechanism under conditions where steadystate kinetics did not apply were found to represent the kinetics of the thermal decomposition of poly(vinyl chloride) in the temperature range 220-240°C.

Notes: Thermal degradation of chlorinated cis- and trans-polybutadienes was studied by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography. The mechanism of chlorination reaction and thermal degradation of the polymers was examined over a wide range of degree of chlorination. The steric structure of so-called head-to-head polyvinyl chloride was elucidated by analysis of such characteristic degradation products as o-, m-, and p-dichlorobenzenes and vinylidenechloride.

Notes: A unique method of estimating the amount of chemical inversions in monomer placement of isotactic and atactic polypropylene was developed by means of pyrolysis gas chromatography of its chlorination products. The molar proportion of mesitylene/pseudocumene was determined from the chromatograms of the pyrolysis products. The isomers of trimethylbenzene which are formed during the pyrolysis gave good information about the triads in the original polypropylene.

Notes: The negative ion mass spectra of chlorine-containing molecules have been measured using a double focusing mass spectrometer with a photographic plate detector. The formulae of the negative ions not previously assigned using an electron multiplier detector have now been assigned.

Notes: The negative ion mass spectra of dicarboxylic acids show [M]-· and prominent [M - H]-ions. These ions can therefore be used to determine the molecular weight of dicarboxylic acids which do not give positive molecular ions. The [C2H3]- ion is a base peak in the spectra of maleic and fumaric acids. Isomeric phthalic acids are readily differentiated.

Notes: The negative ion mass spectra of sulphur, dinitriles and their mixtures were studied. The abundance of negative ions of sulphur was almost comparable to that of positive ions. In the negative ion mass spectrum of a mixture of sulphur and dinitrile, intense and characteristic peaks of [M + Sn]- (n = 2, 3, 4, etc.) were observed resulting from ion-molecule association of dinitrile with the Sn- anions. As a standard sample of a negative ion mass spectrum, sulphur itself has proved useful in the lower mass region (below m/e 256: S8-).

Description / Table of Contents: Um Informationen über die Mikrostruktur von Äthylen/Propylen (E/P)-Copolymeren zu bekommen, wurden Pyrolyse-gaschromatographische Untersuchungen der Chlorierungsprodukte der Äthylen/Propylen-Copolymeren (Cl-(E/P)-Copolymeren) ausgeführt.
Notes: Pyrolysis-gas chromatographic studies of chlorinated ethylene/propylene (Cl-(E/P)) copolymers have been carried out to obtain informations about the microstructure of the nonsubstituted E/P copolymers. The pyrograms of the E/P copolymers show various olefin peaks, while on the pyrograms of the Cl-(E/P) copolymers, the main peaks represent aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene isomers and trimethylbenzene isomers which give good informations about the microstructure of the nonsubstituted copolymers. The concentration of triads in the E/P copolymers and the thermal decomposition of the Cl-(E/P) copolymers are discussed.

Notes: The microstructure of ionically chlorinated polystyrene with or without a catalyst and the distribution of chlorine in the aromatic nucleus of the polymers were studied by means of pyrolysis gas chromatography. Chlorinated polystyrene was pyrolyzed to yield characteristic chlorostyrenes (ortho and para) and dichlorostyrenes (2,4-, 2,5-, and 3,4-) which gave good informations about substitution of the aromatic nucleus in the original polystyrene. The differences between two series of ionically chlorinated polystyrenes were also discussed from the yields of styrenes and monochlorostyrenes.
