Notes: Abstract —In recent years the low fatigue growth rate regime has been the subject of extensive study revealing its complex and often seemingly inconsistent nature. The value of alternating stress intensity at threshold ΔKTh) is sensitive to a range of variables which include mean stress, stress history, monotonie and cyclic yield strength, grain size and environment. A degree of coherency may be achieved by interpreting the data in terms of a crack closure mechanism which is a function of surface roughness. Experiments, in which the surface roughness (φ) has been altered by the introduction of non-metallic inclusions, give insight into the significance of crack closure in this regime.

Notes: Abstract Annealing studies of cold-rolled Ni3Al established that the recrystallization kinetics obey the Avrami equation and that the grain-growth kinetics obey the relation ¯d=Ct n where ¯d is the average grain size, t the time and C and n are parameters whose magnitude depends on temperature. Disorder is introduced during deformation but subsequently removed during recrystallization. Antiphase boundaries are found in some recrystallized grains but do not show any preference to lie on {100} planes, contrary to predictions based on Flinn's nearest-neighbour approximation model. Twins, dislocation networks an planar faults are also found in recrystallized grains.

Notes: Abstract In order to make use of the available strength of strong fibres, the metal matrix of a composite will have to undergo plastic deformation. The effect that this will have on the fatigue behaviour and damping capacity is discussed, with reference to aluminium reinforced with silica fibres and with stainless steel wires.

Notes: Abstract Ductile yielding of the Dugdale type and brittle fracture in the Barenblatt sense are investigated for regions at the ends of a periodic array of semi-infinite parallel cracks in a stretched orthotropic sheet. Direct transform methods are used to obtain the Wiener-Hopf equation. Factorization of the kernel and several other steps of the analysis can be completed in closed form for a dense class of elastic constants, and asymptotic forms are derived for other cases. The solutions depend upon the finite spacing between cracks and have characteristics which have been observed in experiments: 1) At high load levels the yield zone of the ductile material grows in jumps; 2) For a brittle material the allowable load level increases as the speciman size decreases.

Notes: Abstract The effect of stable dispersion of Al2O3 in copper crystals upon recrystallization kinetics has been studied in three alloys, termed L1, L2 and H2, and in pure copper. L1 and L2 contained particles of similar size (0.028μm), but of differing interparticle spacing, and L1 and H2 contained particles of similar spacing (0.05μm) but of differing size. After a cold-rolling reduction of 50%, alloys L1 and L2 showed retarded recrystallization at 700° C compared with pure copper, there being greater retardation in L2, which had the smaller inter-particle spacing. Extensive recovery prior to recrystallization was observed and this led to deviations from the Avrami equation in describing the recrystallization kinetics. Calculations show that the retardation cannot be due to grain-boundary or sub-boundary pinning by the dispersed phase, and it is concluded that the effect is due to the homogenization of dislocation distribution by the particles suppressing nucleation. Alloy H2 contained larger particles (0.041μm), and exhibited accelerated recrystallization compared with pure copper. This indicates that a very delicate balance must exist between the factors tending to retard and those tending to accelerate recrystallization in these materials. It is suggested that the acceleration arises from an increased misorientation developing within the transition bands.

Notes: Abstract The reinforcement of metallic matrices with stronger, stiffer ceramic fibres is one approach which is currently being pursued in an effort to develop materials which will withstand the demanding conditions imposed by present-day engineering requirements. The gains in tensile strength which might be obtained by suitable combination of fibres and metal have been widely speculated upon [1] and, recently, experimental verification of some of these predictions has been obtained [2]. As yet, however, little attention has been directed towards assessing the limitations of such composite systems, isolating their causes and attempting to overcome them.

Notes: Abstract Analysis is presented of the steady propagation of a crack through a layer of viscous fibers which join two orthotropic elastic half-planes. If the fibers behave linearly, then the stress components at the crack tip are singular, and the strength of the singularity depends upon the crack speed and upon elastic and viscous parameters of the problem. Consideration of more realistic nonlinear behavior near the crack tip results in a finite stress system. Some particular simple models are postulated and analyzed.
