    Description: We report on the generation of picosecond self-mode-locked pulses from midinfrared quantum cascade lasers, at wavelengths within the important molecular fingerprint region. These devices are based on intersubband electron transitions in semiconductor nanostructures, which are characterized by some of the largest optical nonlinearities observed in nature and by picosecond relaxation lifetimes. Our results are interpreted with a model in which one of these nonlinearities, the intensity-dependent refractive index of the lasing transition, creates a nonlinear waveguide where the optical losses decrease with increasing intensity.     Description: Conflict monitoring by the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been posited to signal a need for greater cognitive control, producing neural and behavioral adjustments. However, the very occurrence of behavioral adjustments after conflict has been questioned, along with suggestions that there is no direct evidence of ACC conflict-related activity predicting subsequent neural or behavioral adjustments in control.     Description: We combine photonic and electronic band structure engineering to create a surface-emitting quantum cascade microcavity laser. A high-index contrast two-dimensional photonic crystal is used to form a micro-resonator that simultaneously provides feedback for laser action and diffracts light vertically from the surface of the semiconductor surface. A top metallic contact allows electrical current injection and provides vertical optical confinement through a bound surface plasmon wave.     Description: Arylboron compounds have intriguing properties and are important building blocks for chemical synthesis. A family of Ir catalysts now enables the direct synthesis of arylboron compounds from aromatic hydrocarbons and boranes under "solventless" conditions. The Ir catalysts are highly selective for C-H activation and do not interfere with subsequent in situ transformations, including Pd-mediated cross-couplings with aryl halides.     Notes: A detailed systematic study on the growth morphology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on Si in atmospheric pressure thermal chemical vapor deposition was undertaken. The role of NH3 for vertical alignment of CNTs was investigated. The direct cause for the alignment was a dense distribution of the catalytic metal particles, but that the particles are maintained catalytically active under amorphous carbon deposits was established by NH3. It allows a dense nucleation of the CNTs, and consequently, assists vertical alignment through entanglement and mechanical leaning among the tubes. The CNTs grew in a base growth mode. Since Ni is consumed both by silicide reaction and by capture into the growing tube, the growth stops when Ni is totally depleted. It occurs earlier for smaller particles, and thus a long time of growth results in a thin bottom with poor adhesion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Korea Multipurpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC) project has been initiated to develop and build a high current proton/H− linear accelerator capable of delivering an 1 GeV cw proton beam with an intensity of 20 mA in the final stage. The major proton beam will be used for nuclear-waste transmutation, energy production, and nuclear physics experiments while utilizing the minor negative hydrogen beam for basic science research and medical therapy. A Duoplasmatron proton source for the KOMAC linear accelerator has been built at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The hydrogen beam currents of up to 50 mA at the extraction voltage of 50 kV are routinely obtained. A low normalized rms emittance of 0.2 π mm mrad and a proton fraction of over 80% are obtained in this source. With the 100% duty factor of ion source operation, the arc filaments of the source have survived over 40 h. Except for the filament lifetime, the achieved parameters of the proton beam source are satisfying most requirements of the KOMAC ion source. The ion sources can extract the 10 mA nitrogen beam and 3 mA argon beam for the industrial surface modification processes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Our research determined whether chelators could influence physical location and prooxidative activity of lipid-phase iron in oil-in-water emulsions. Corn oil saturated with ferric ions was used to produce polyoxyethylene 10 lauryl ether-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. Continuous-phase iron concentrations increased with increasing chelator concentrations (10 to 100 μM) and storage time (1 to 7 d). At pH 3.0, the concentration of continuous-phase iron was higher in the presence of EDTA and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) than citrate. STPP and EDTA were more effective than citrate at inhibiting lipid oxidation at pH 3.0. These results indicate that chelators can increase the transfer of iron in lipid to the aqueous phase, thus altering its prooxidant activity in oil-in-water emulsions.

    Notes: Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional live feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off-the-shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low-hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.

    Notes: : Microporous glass (MPG) membrane emulsification was used for micro encapsulation of Lactoba-cillus casei YIT 9018. Several process parameters of membrane emulsification were investigated for producing a stable emulsion. The droplet dia in the emulsion depended upon the membrane pore size. The monodispersed emulsion obtained by this technique resulted in well-formed microcapsules with a narrow particle size distribution. For artificial gastric acid and bile, the viable count of encapsulated cells was constant through the incubation time, while the count of nonencapsulated cells was significantly decreased. A storage stability test at different temperatures resulted in a viability of encapsulated cells 3 to 5 log cycles higher than the viability of nonencapsulated cells.
