Notes: Damage formed by BF+2 and As+ implantations in Si was evaluated quantitatively. The density of displaced atoms (Dda) was determined from 1.5 MeV He+ Rutherford backscattering spectrometery. Dda increased from 4.7×1016 to 1.6×1017 cm−2 with the dose increased from 6.0×1013 to 1.3×1014 cm−2. However, Dda saturates at around 4×1017 cm−2 for all doses above 5×1014 cm−2. The thermal wave signal intensity shows the same dose dependence as Dda. This result shows that thermal wave signal intensity has a close relation with the density of displaced atoms formed by ion implantation. Therefore, quantitative damage monitorings can be achieved by thermal wave intensity measurements. Also, the variation of thermal wave signal intensity with ion implant energy was studied.

Notes: Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional live feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off-the-shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low-hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.

Notes: A sex-associated amplified fragment length polymorphism and a strain-specific random amplified polymorphic DNA marker were identified from Asian arowana (dragonfish; Scleropages formosus Müller & Schlegel) by screening pooled genomic DNA samples from three different strains as well as males and females respectively. Both markers were cloned, sequenced and successfully converted into sequence-tagged-site (STS) markers. The strain-specific STS marker could be applied to differentiate the Indonesian golden strain of Asian arowana from the green and blood-red strains before the stage when colours become identifiable. Individuals from the green strain could be sexed with an efficiency of 82.7% using the sex-associated STS marker. Thus, populations with preferred sex ratios can be formed without the need of rearing a large number of fish.

Notes: A detailed comparison of the predictive powers of two recently determined empirical and two recently proposed theoretical potential energy surfaces for the N2–He interaction has been carried out. In particular, the following properties have been tested: at the microscopic level, total and state-to-state differential cross sections and absolute total integral cross sections, while at the macroscopic level, interaction second virial, diffusion, viscosity, and thermal conductivity coefficients, as well as the rotational relaxation time, depolarized Rayleigh spectral collision broadening, and shear viscosity and thermal conductivity field-effect data in N2–He mixtures. Exact calculations have been employed, from the close-coupling method for treating scattering data at low energies to the classical trajectory method with second-order corrections to compute the effective cross sections that determine the bulk transport and relaxation phenomena. The empirical exponential-spline–Morse-spline–van der Waals surface [J. Chem. Phys. 85, 7011 (1986)], closely followed by the model Bowers–Tang–Toennies surface [J. Chem. Phys. 88, 5465 (1988)], gives better simultaneous agreement with the scattering data, the second virial coefficient data, the bulk transport data, and the depolarized Rayleigh collision-broadening data, which are properties sensitive to the spherical component of the interaction and to the anisotropy of the low repulsive wall. None of the potential surfaces examined here includes a dependence upon the vibrational stretching coordinate of the N2 molecule, since none of the data employed in the fitting is sensitive to this coordinate. The two theoretical model potentials, especially that based upon an earlier Hartree–Fock plus damped dispersion model surface [J. Phys. Chem. 88, 2036 (1984)], gives better agreement with the rotational relaxation and field-effect data, which are properties sensitive to the anisotropy of the high-repulsive wall. It is established that the exponential-spline–Morse-spline–van der Waals and Bowers–Tang–Toennies surfaces are on the whole the more reliable of the empirical and model surfaces examined, respectively. It is concluded that the optimum N2–He potential energy surface should be a blend of the empirical exponential-spline–Morse-spline–van der Waals and of the two model surfaces.

Notes: A new multiproperty potential energy surface for the N2–Ar intermolecular interaction is reported. The present determination is based upon molecular beam total differential and integral scattering data, taken together with the temperature dependence of the interaction second virial coefficient, transport properties, transport property field effects, and relaxation phenomena, such as pressure broadening of the depolarized Rayleigh line and longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation. The primary fit has been made to the beam scattering and virial data, and refinements to the potential parameters thus determined have been made by employing the data available for the gas phase transport and relaxation phenomena. The potential energy surface employed is an empirical Morse–Morse–spline–van der Waals form, in which the potential parameters depend upon the angle between the N2 figure axis and the line joining the centers of mass of N2 and Ar. No N2 stretching dependence has been included in the present determination. Comparison is made between the present potential energy surface and two other previously published N2–Ar potential energy surfaces. The present potential energy surface provides the best overall agreement for all available gas phase data for N2–Ar mixtures, and can thus be recommended for calculations of all properties of such mixtures that depend upon the intermolecular interaction.

Notes: Summary Radioimmunoassay and immunocytochemical staining methods were used to study the distribution of thyroid hormone in rat alveolar macrophages. The cells were fractionated into six subpopulations by Percoll density gradient. Positive immunoreactive tri-iodothyronine (T3) was observed in all subpopulations of macrophages, especially in low-density (1.040 and 1.050 g cm−3) groups, by avidin-biotin-peroxidase immunostaining techniques. The macrophages also showed various patterns of cellular T3 stainability. Results from radioimmunoassay of macrophage extracts also demonstrated that macrophages of low density had a higher level of total T3 than those of higher densities (≥1.060 g cm−3).

Notes: Summary Thyroidal iodine metabolism in the hypophysectomized snake,Elaphe taeniura, was examined in vivo and in vitro using125I. Hypophysectomy decreased, and TSH increased, both in vivo and in vitro thyroidal accumulation and uptake of radioiodine, and the amount of all labelled substances in the thyroid gland. The operation also altered the distribution of the relative amounts of labelled iodoamino acids in vivo, but not in vitro; nor was there any effect on release of these labelled substances in vitro. In view of the paucity of information available on poikilothermic species, the data are discussed in relation to those of hypothysectomized rats.

Notes: Abstract The extrathyroidal conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine in the snake, Elaphe taeniura, has been determined in vitro. The liver, kidney and pancreas are important organs showing significant 5′-deiodinase activity. The pancreas has a higher conversion rate (18.5±3.58 pmol·min-1·mg protein-1) than other vertebrate tissues that have been studied. The 5′-deiodinase activity is dependent on substrate (thyroxine) concentration, cofactor, i.e. dithioerythritol concentration, temperature, duration of incubation and pH. It is sensitive to iopanoic acid, propylthiouracil, salicylate and propranolol. It is also indicative that the 5′-deiodinase activity increased and decreased, respectively, in snakes with experimentally induced hyper- and hypo-thyroidism. These characteristics suggest that snake 5′-deiodinase is similar to that of mammals, probably of type I category.

Notes: Abstract A series of isothermal low-cycle fatigue studies of small to extremely small-volume solder joints has been conducted. These solder microjoints were designed and fabricated using processing which duplicates the microelectronics interconnection structures that might be used in high density, highly integrated flip-chip packaging and all fatigue tests were conducted in fully reversed simple shear both with and without dwells at maximum strain. Results of low-cycle fatigue tests of both single and double-bump 95/5 Pb/Sn solder microjoints in the form of Manson-Coffin (plastic strain amplitude versus fatigue life) plots and post-test failure mode analysis (FMA) carried out using scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractography are presented and evaluated.
