Notizen: Many organizations have begun to implement drug and alcohol testing programs to screen potential and existing employees for substance abuse in an effort to curb counterproductive behavior at work. Paradoxically, these policies can be seen as unfair and potentially result in counterproductive behavior. The present study investigated whether differences exist between Canada and the USA, two nations that have often been described as ‘indistinguishable’ from one another, with respect to their perceptions of fairness and acceptance of the introduction of a drug and alcohol testing policy in the workplace. Scenarios were used to test the hypotheses. The results showed that Canadians (N= 163) were less accepting of the policy and perceived the policy as less fair than their American counterparts (N= 127). In addition, the results showed that the difference between third-party observers’ and recipients’ acceptance of the policy was less for Canadians than for Americans.

Notizen: This article considers the relationships between culture and reactions to personnel selection procedures. The limited international research that has examined perceptions of procedural justice of different selection techniques is reviewed. The consistency in reactions and underlying procedural dimensions associated with those reactions is noteworthy across the countries that have been studied. We also propose a model of cross-cultural influences on procedural justice in personnel selection by identifying those cultural dimensions that are most likely to influence the salience of different distributive and procedural justice rules. The discussion addresses whether cultural dimensions can adequately capture the international dimensions that most centrally influence reactions to selection procedures and how knowledge of cultural influences on reactions can aid the implementation of selection procedures that are unfamiliar to a particular country.

Notizen: The purpose of this paper is to examine the usefulness of the organizational justice approach to applicant reactions. We begin with an overview of the research relating the fairness of selection procedures (“selection fairness”) to individual and organizational outcomes. Next we propose boundary conditions defining when fairness should matter, the appropriate outcomes to examine in applicant reactions research, and methodological issues limiting the contribution of much of the current literature. We then consider a range of questions that remain to be addressed and new issues such as high-tech testing. Finally, we propose a series of applied questions and recommendations based on both theory and empirical research.

Notizen: The 100 ns, 20 MA pinch-driver Z is surrounded by an extensive set of diagnostics. There are nine radial lines of sight set at 12° above horizontal and each of these may be equipped with up to five diagnostic ports. Instruments routinely fielded viewing the pinch from the side with these ports include x-ray diode arrays, photoconducting detector arrays, bolometers, transmission grating spectrometers, time-resolved x-ray pinhole cameras, x-ray crystal spectrometers, calorimeters, silicon photodiodes, and neutron detectors. A diagnostic package fielded on axis for viewing internal pinch radiation consists of nine lines of sight. This package accommodates virtually the same diagnostics as the radial ports. Other diagnostics not fielded on the axial or radial ports include current B-dot monitors, filtered x-ray scintillators coupled by fiber optics to streak cameras, streaked visible spectroscopy, velocity interferometric system for any reflector, bremsstrahlung cameras, and active shock breakout measurement of hohlraum temperature. The data acquisition system is capable of recording up to 500 channels and the data from each shot is available on the Internet. A major new diagnostic presently under construction is the BEAMLET backlighter. We will briefly describe each of these diagnostics and present some of the highest-quality data from them. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Initial experiments to study the Z-pinch-driven hohlraum high-yield inertial confinement fusion (ICF) concept of Hammer, Tabak, and Porter [Hammer et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 2129 (1999)] are described. The relationship between measured pinch power, hohlraum temperature, and secondary hohlraum coupling ("hohlraum energetics") is well understood from zero-dimensional semianalytic, and two-dimensional view factor and radiation magnetohydrodynamics models. These experiments have shown the highest x-ray powers coupled to any Z-pinch-driven secondary hohlraum (26±5 TW), indicating the concept could scale to fusion yields of 〉200 MJ. A novel, single-sided power feed, double-pinch driven secondary that meets the pinch simultaneity requirements for polar radiation symmetry has also been developed. This source will permit investigation of the pinch power balance and hohlraum geometry requirements for ICF relevant secondary radiation symmetry, leading to a capsule implosion capability on the Z accelerator [Spielman et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2105 (1998)]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: : The amylase activity of twenty strains of Lactobacillus species isolated from intestinal contents of pigs was studied in vitro. Hydrolysis of starch was measured by following the disappearance of starch in a broth medium during the growth of all three strains. The amount of enzyme activity varied among strains. Three strains (A-4, L9 and L23) were selected for further study based on their high amylolytic activity in a broth containing soluble starch as the only carbohydrate source. Strains A-4 and L23 were identified as L. acidophilus and strain L9 was identified as L. fermentum. Among the three cultures, L. acidophilus L23 was selected as a potential candidate for use as a probiotic for improving digestion of starch in pigs based on its growth and hydrolysis of raw starch. The enzyme activity of L. acidophilus L23 was associated with the cell envelope and that of L. fermentum L9 was extracellular. The enzyme activity of L. acidophilus A4 was found in both locations. The enzyme activity of L. acidophilus L23 was inducible rather than constitutive.

Notizen: Improved techniques for culturing and enumerating Campylobacter jejuni were developed. Parameters included (1) growth vessel type, (2) growth atmosphere, (3) incubation time, and (4) frequency of subcul-turing. Improved growth and consistent morphology were obtained using a tissue culture flask compared with an Erlenmeyer flask or a test tube as well as exposure to modified atmosphere (10% CO2, 85% N2, and 5% O2). When cultures of C. jejuni were incubated more than 24 h, transformation to the coccoid increased, and fewer colony-forming units were detected. Excessive subculturing (〉2 times) resulted in increased formation of coc-coid forms. Decreased concentrations of colony-forming units of C. jejuni commonly attributed to the production of a viable, nonculturable form also may be due to cellular clumping. These techniques should alleviate difficulty and reduce variation when working with Campylobacter.

Notizen: : Multiple species cultures, including 2 strains of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM plus 1 strain each of Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus casei, were used to make yogurt-like products. The lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were tested for growth in the products and subsequent viability during refrigerated storage. During fermentation, L. casei Com-5 actually declined in numbers, while L. casei E5 and E10 increased about 2 fold. Numbers of B. longum S9 increased about 3 fold while B. longum Com-4 did not increase. During storage, L. acidophilus NCFM appeared stable in all mixtures and both strains of bifidobacteria decreased. Lactobacillus casei E5 and E10 were more stable than was L. casei Com-5.
