    Notes: Abstract The influence of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity and available food) on the condition, reproductive activity and biochemical composition of a native population of Ostrea edulis L. in San Cibran (Galicia, Spain) was studied between September 1988 and December 1989. Histological preparations of gonads showed that gametogenesis started when temperature was at its lowest in winter. The water temperature in San Cibran never fell low enough to interrupt it. Gametogenesis proceeded slowly and spawning took place in May–June, although the predicted time of ripening was early March. Salinity in San Cibran was relatively stable throughout the year; it did not seem to have any influence on gametogenesis. Available food appeared to be a very important factor in controlling gonad growth, once gametogenesis was initiated. The major concentration of suspended organic particulate matter was present in the spring at the time of rapid gonadal maturation. Only one spawning period was observed. Larvae were released when the food in the water was high. Seasonal changes in the main biochemical components of this oyster were determined for a standard individual. Lipids and carbohydrates presented a similar time-course whereas proteins were constant. When food was abundant, energy reserves were built up. Spawning produced a decrease in biochemical constituent levels, and recovery coincided with the phytoplankton bloom. The stored reserves, mainly lipids, were used to overcome a state of energy imbalance in late autumn associated with low food availability. Results show this oyster to be an opportunist organism which concentrates its reproductive effort during a short period of favourable conditions and which is directly dependent on nutritive availability in the environment.

    Notes: Myxococcus coralloides ATCC 25202 and Myxococcus fulvus ATCC 23093 produced an extracellular diffusible factor during fruiting body formation. This factor acted to shorten the lag time before the appearance of aggregates and to increase the number of aggregates for both species. The factor from M. coralloides presented a more selective activity on the aggregation of this species.

    Notes: The Laser Evaporation Ion Source (LEVIS) active lithium ion source has been developed for use on the focusing ion diode operated on the 10 TW Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator-II (PBFA-II) [J. P. VanDevender and D. L. Cook, Science 232, 831 (1986)] at Sandia National Laboratories. The source configuration consists of two laser pulses impinging on a heated (200 °C) thin-film LiAg layer on the anode surface. A short-pulse Nd:YAG laser creates a high-density vapor, which is then ionized by a long-pulse dye laser using the LIBORS (laser ionization based on resonant saturation) ionization method. Small-scale experiments determined that this dual laser-based approach can produce a source plasma of adequate density and confinement for acceleration and transport. Hardware modifications were undertaken to correct problems of premature impedance collapse and lack of beam lithium seen on previous PBFA-II experiments. As much as 85 kJ of Li is measured at the beam focus, but the source may not have been operating in a fully active (i.e., preformed) manner. Focusing performance appears superior to a passive LiF ion source operated on PBFA-II with the same magnetic field topology. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ion diode and beam focusing experiments are in progress on PBFA-II working toward an ultimate goal of significant burn of an ICF pellet. Beam diagnostics on these experiments include a Thomson parabola, Kα x-ray pinhole cameras, filtered ion pinhole cameras, and a magnetic spectrometer. We are developing two new computer programs to simulate and interpret the data obtained from these diagnostics. vida is a VAX-based program that manipulates and unfolds data from digitized particle and x-ray diagnostic images. vida operations include: image display, background subtraction, relative-to-absolute coordinate transformations, and image projection into the beam reference frame. picdiag allows us to study the effects of time-dependent ion focusing on the performance of ion beam diagnostics.

    Notes: A review of the diagnostics used at Sandia National Laboratories to measure the parameters of intense proton and lithium beams generated on the PBFA-II accelerator will be presented. These diagnostics consist of several types, namely: Kα x-ray pinhole cameras, a multiframe dE/dx ion pinhole camera, a p-i-n array ion pinhole camera, Thomson parabola spectrographs, a Rutherford magnetic spectrograph, plasma visible spectroscopy, and several nuclear activation diagnostics. These components, when taken together, enable a rather thorough description of the 5-MV, 10-TW ion beams presently being produced. A unique feature of these diagnostics is that they are capable of operating in hard (several MeV) x-ray bremsstrahlung backgrounds of some 109–1010 rad/s. Details of each diagnostic, its integration, data reduction procedures, and recent PBFA-II data will be discussed.

    Notes: Six Salix clones were inoculated with urediniospores of four isolates of Melampsora larici-epitea at five inoculum levels using a leaf-disc method. Disease reactions were recorded using a digital camera; the number and size of uredinia were examined using image analysis software; and spore yield per leaf disc was measured. In three Salix/Melampsora combinations, S. × mollissima‘Q83’/Q1 (LET4); S. viminalis‘78183’/V1 (LET1); and S. × stipularis/V1, pustule numbers increased as inoculum density became higher. In the remainder, S. viminalis‘Mullatin’/V1; S. × calodendron/DB (LET3); and S. burjatica‘Korso’/K (LR1), pustule numbers initially increased, then decreased as inoculum densities exceeded 140–360 spores per disc. Calculated infection efficiency ranged from 0·11 to 0·20 on the three willows inoculated with V1: 0·16–0·68 for S. × calodendron/DB; 0·20–0·55 for ‘Q83’/Q1; and 0·07–0·48 for Korso/K. In single-spore inoculations, up to 10% of spores produced single uredinia. Infection efficiency increased sharply between inoculum densities of 1–40 spores per leaf disc. Spore yield was more closely correlated to pustule area (accounting for 61·2% variance for the combined data) than to the number of pustules (42·7% variance). For spore yields in relation to pustule numbers, clone-specific individual lines having different intercepts and slopes fitted significantly better than either a single line for all the tested willows, or parallel lines fitted to each clone (P 〈 0·001). For spore yields in relation to pustule area, clone-specific individual parallel lines were significantly better than a single line (P 〈 0·001).

    Notes: A total of 174 Salix (willow) clones belonging to 57 species and 14 interspecific hybrids were inoculated with seven pathotypes of Melampsora larici-epitea using the leaf disc method. Infection types were scored based on the uredinial pustule area data and the inoculum density. A close correlation (R2 = 0·82) was found between the average pustule area and the average number of spores produced. Most of the willows were also assessed in the field for rust in 1999. Most willow clones belonging to the species native to western Europe were infected by the rust. In inoculation experiments, uredinia developed on 46 S. viminalis clones, out of a total of 47. In the field, all the S. viminalis clones were infected by rust. Within the subgenus Vetrix, eight out of the 17 willow species that originated from North and South America produced rust pustules in inoculation experiments. Of these, S. pellita was most susceptible. Salix irrorata and S. lasiolepsis var. bracelinae produced well developed pustules after inoculation but no rust infections were detected in the field. In both leaf disc tests and field assessments, no rust infections were found on S. candida, S. cordata, S. drummondiana, S. eriocephala, S. hookeriana, S. houghtonii, S. humilis, S. rigida var. mackenziana and S. syrticola. Of 12 species of subgenus Vetrix native to northeast Asia and Japan, only S. kochiana was susceptible both in inoculation tests and in the field. Salix rossica produced no symptoms in leaf disc tests but showed low levels of infection in the field. The maximum infection type scores in leaf disc tests were highly significantly correlated with field disease severity scores (Spearman rank correlation coefficient was 0·76, P 〈 1 × 10−10).
