Notes: The differential genotypes R1, R10 and R11, as originally defined by Black, were crossed with R-gene-free cultivars and the progenies divided into two subpopulations comprising those which had inherited the R-gene and those which had not. The underlying level of field resistance of the two groups was compared in a field trial in which they were inoculated with an isolate that could overcome the relevant R-genes. The R-gene-bearing group was significantly (P 〈 0·001) more resistant than the R-gene-free group, with mean scores over four dates in 2000 of 4·86 and 4·09, respectively, on a 1–9 scale of increasing resistance, and of 4·10 and 2·35 on one date in 2001. However, the magnitude of the effect depended on the R-gene and the year of the trial. Data from a progeny of cv. Stirling (with an R-gene and a high level of field resistance) were examined and the same effect of an R-gene found. Fewer of the R-gene-bearing group of clones were highly susceptible, and more were resistant. The most resistant clones always bore the R-gene. It is concluded that increased resistance is conferred by the defeated R-gene or linked genes for field resistance.

Notes: Midinfrared (3.6–3.8 μm) interband cascade lasers based on InAs/GaInSb type-II quantum wells have been demonstrated in the continuous-wave (cw) mode with low-threshold current densities (e.g., ∼56 A/cm2 at 80 K) and power efficiencies exceeding 9%. At a relatively low current of 0.4 A, we observed ∼100 mW/facet of optical power out at 80 K (124 mW at 60 K) from lasers mounted epilayer-side up with uncoated facets. These lasers were able to operate in the cw mode at temperatures up to 127 K. Also, in the pulsed mode, devices lased at temperatures up to 250 K and displayed, at 80 K, a peak power efficiency exceeding 11%. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mid-IR (3.8–3.9 μm) interband cascade lasers based on InAs/GaInSb type-II heterostructures have been demonstrated at temperatures up to 210 K. From several lasers at temperatures above 100 K, we observed a slope greater than 750 mW/A per facet corresponding to a differential external quantum efficiency exceeding 460%. Also, a peak optical output power exceeding 4 W/facet and peak power efficiency of 7% were observed from one laser at 80 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A mid-IR (3.3–3.5 μm) type-II interband cascade laser has been demonstrated at temperatures up to 300 K in pulsed mode and 150 K in cw mode. Threshold current densities as low as 13.2 A/cm2 and power efficiencies as large as 17% have been achieved under cw conditions at 80 K. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have measured room-temperature photocurrent spectra of p-i-n diode structures containing multiple superlattice-equivalent quantum wells wherein each quantum well consists of a few periods of a fine-period (In,Ga)As/(In,Al)As superlattice. Both the absolute exciton absorption energies and the Stark shifts are in excellent agreement with calculations, which predict a larger Stark shift for this structure than for a quaternary quantum well with the same width and absorption edge. Calculated electric-field-induced changes in the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index show that these structures are promising candidates for semiconductor intensity and phase modulators for wavelengths around 1.3 μm.

Notes: Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Er3+ in an Er-doped silicon film were recorded at 2 and 77 K over the wavelength range from 1.52 to 1.68 μm, which includes optical transitions between the Er3+ 4I13/2 and 4I15/2 manifolds. These spectra were then analyzed to determine the nature of the electrostatic field at the site of the Er ion that governs the ion's optical behavior. The PL spectra were analyzed three different ways: by considering the Er3+ ions to be occupying sites of Td, C3, or D2d point group symmetry. Transition energies and magnetic dipole transition probabilities were calculated for each case by diagonalizing a Hamiltonian representing the free-ion and crystal-field interactions in a Russell–Saunders basis of states spanning the lowest 15 J multiplets of the 4f11 electronic configuration of Er3+. Crystal-field parameters were varied in each case to find the best agreement with the experiment. Our results showed that the site symmetry of the Er3+ ions most consistent with the data is D2d. For this case, the rms deviation between the experimental and calculated energy levels is 3.3 cm−1 with the calculated magnetic dipole transition probabilities in qualitative agreement with the experiment. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In 1977, a fodder turnip breeding programme was started from seven cultivars with the primary aim of increasing dry-matter yield. The breeding method chosen was population improvement by half-sib family selection on a biennial cycle. Seed production in polythene tunnels with blowflies as pollinators was followed by assessing the resulting progenies in replicated yield trials and observation plots from which plants were selected for the next cycle. Six generations of selection resulted in a population with a yield that was 25% higher than the mean of the initial seven cultivars. This was remarkably close to the predicted superiority of the population, despite a significant discrepancy in one generation. It is concluded that the greatest response to selection per year would be achieved by selecting eight families from 128 assessed for 1 year in trials at two or three sites with an overall total of six replicates, given a resource limit of 800 plots.

Notes: The crystal structure of (S,S)-dimethyldiketopyridino-18-crown-6, (I), C17H23NO7, an effective host for chiral organic ammonium salts is described. A minimum-energy conformation was obtained by a pseudo-Monte Carlo conformational search in the gas phase and was compared with the crystal structure. Structural changes in chiral recognition processes are also discussed.

Notes: Summary Liquid crystal polysiloxane stationary phases were prepared by coating two different polymers on deactivated porous silica particles (10 μm diameter, 80 Å pores). Deactivation of the silica particles before coating was necessary to prepare highly efficient and inert stationary phases for supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Fat-soluble vitamins E, A, K1, K2, D2, and D3 were separated on these columns using neat supercritical CO2 as mobile phase. The analyses were completed within 40 min at 70 °C. The results were compared to those obtained using a capillary column packed with less ordered liquid crystalm,m-cyanobiphenyl-substituted polysiloxane coated particles. Reduced shape selectivity was observed with this cyanobiphenyl phase. The response factors of vitamins A, E, K1, K2, D2, and D3 when using the flame ionization detector (FID) were determined to be very similar.
