The eruption chronology for the Quaternary, sourced by the TVZ, is well studied and established, whereas the volcanic evolution of the precursor arc systems, like the CVZ (central activity c. 18 to 2 Ma), is poorly known due to limited accessibility to, or identification of, onshore volcanic deposits and their sources. Here, we investigate the marine tephra record of the Neogene, mostly sourced by the CVZ, of cores from IODP Exp. 375 (Sites U1520 and U1526), ODP Leg 181 (Sites 1123, 1124 and 1125), IODP Leg 329 (Site U1371) and DSDP Leg 90 (Site 594) offshore of New Zealand. In total, we identify 306 primary tephra layers in the marine sediments. Multi‐approach age models (e.g. biostratigraphy, zircon ages) are used in combination with geochemical fingerprinting (major and trace element compositions) and the stratigraphic context of each marine tephra layer to establish 168 tie‐lines between marine tephra layers from different holes and sites. Following this approach, we identify 208 explosive volcanic events in the Neogene between c. 17.5 and 2.6 Ma. This is the first comprehensive study of New Zealand's Neogene explosive volcanism established from tephrochronostratigraphic studies, which reveals continuous volcanic activity between c. 12 and 2.6 Ma with an abrupt compositional change at c. 4.5 Ma, potentially associated with the transition from CVZ to TVZ.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Since 18 Ma, volcanic activity in New Zealand is dominantly sourced by the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Most caldera systems of the CVZ identified so far are located on Coromandel Peninsula in the NW of North Island, New Zealand, but studies of the CVZ are rare mainly due to the limited accessibility of its volcanic deposits, as well as missing stratigraphic continuity between different outcrops and the volcanic source. Here, our ocean drilling tephra record—mainly volcanic ash from explosive eruptions, distributed and falling out over the ocean—has a great potential to reveal the eruption history of the CVZ because it is preserved in marine sediments in a nearly undisturbed stratigraphic context. We analyzed ∼400 marine tephra layers from multiple ocean sediment cores off the coast of New Zealand for their geochemical glass compositions and identified 306 as largely undisturbed ash deposits. These primary ash deposits correspond to a total number of 208 Neogene volcanic events. Different dating methods result in a continuous marine tephra record for the last 12 Ma, equivalent to a unique and most complete eruptive history for the CVZ.     Description: Infrastructure built on perennially frozen ice-rich ground relies heavily on thermally stable subsurface conditions. Climate-warming-induced deepening of ground thaw puts such infrastructure at risk of failure. For better assessing the risk of large-scale future damage to Arctic infrastructure, improved strategies for model-based approaches are urgently needed. We used the laterally coupled 1D heat conduction model CryoGrid3 to simulate permafrost degradation affected by linear infrastructure.We present a case study of a gravel road built on continuous permafrost (Dalton highway, Alaska) and forced our model under historical and strong future warming conditions (following the RCP8.5 scenario). As expected, the presence of a gravel road in the model leads to higher net heat flux entering the ground compared to a reference run without infrastructure and thus a higher rate of thaw. Further, our results suggest that road failure is likely a consequence of lateral destabilisation due to talik formation in the ground beside the road rather than a direct consequence of a top-down thawing and deepening of the active layer below the road centre. In line with previous studies, we identify enhanced snow accumulation and ponding (both a consequence of infrastructure presence) as key factors for increased soil temperatures and road degradation. Using differing horizontal model resolutions we show that it is possible to capture these key factors and their impact on thawing dynamics with a low number of lateral model units, underlining the potential of our model approach for use in pan-Arctic risk assessments. Our results suggest a general two-phase behaviour of permafrost degradation: an initial phase of slow and gradual thaw, followed by a strong increase in thawing rates after the exceedance of a critical ground warming. The timing of this transition and the magnitude of thaw rate acceleration differ strongly between undisturbed tundra and infrastructure-affected permafrost ground. Our model results suggest that current model-based approaches which do not explicitly take into account infrastructure in their designs are likely to strongly underestimate the timing of future Arctic infrastructure failure.

    Description: Since joining INTERMANET in 2013, the Cheongyang Observatory(CYG) has been operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. The CYG has continuously produced data observing the Earth's magnetic field. In order to improve and maintain quality of the proton magnetometer data, the magnetic field at the absolute measurement pillar was measured once a month using an optical pumping Cs-4He magnetometer, which is used as a magnetic field standard at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science. The 1-year average (2022) of the difference between the proton and Cs-4He magnetometer values at the absolute measurement pillar was –4.7 nT with a standard deviation of 0.2 nT. This kind of a comparison with a magnetic field standard, e.g., a Cs-4He magnetometer, operated on the basis of atomic magnetic resonance and verified through various ways for use as a standard, is necessary because the proton magnetometer typically measures the magnetic resonance of protons in kerosene samples. In the IAGA, the shielded proton gyromagnetic ratio, which is the proportional coefficient of the resonance frequency and magnetic field of the scalar proton magnetometer, is adopted from the CODATA and used. But the CODATA defines a pure water spherical sample, applying the value to a proton magnetometer using kerosene may cause a difference. In the conference, we will present an analysis of the comparison results between the two magnetometers including the temperature dependency.

    Description: Earthquakes have caused enormous tragedies for human beings all the time, especially in this century. A more recent tragic earthquake that has already taken four more thousand of lives is still a living tragedy nowadays in the border area between Turkey and Sialia. How to avoid this kind of tragedy becomes an important mission to almost everybody who ever works in the related field, yet the challenge is too difficult to overcome. Many approaches have been tried such as to understand the vibration source and try to predict the occurring cycle or to detect the trembling signal and try to warn the surrounding area as early as possible. All of those methods are important but not easy to approach, especially for an area that is remote, underdeveloped but populated. A more effective but cheap approach must be provided as in this research, where a typical TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper) device combined with a TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) device was installed in a structure to mitigate the earthquake-induced vibrations. It is found from the results of the study that for vibrations with either a long period or short period the amplitudes of the vibration can be eased by 70% in terms of the transfer function of the displacement. According to the results in this study the method is also applicable to large and heavy buildings and structures.

    Description: We report on a total of 1005 samples analyzed for major and trace element compositions from marine sediments drilled along the Hikurangi subduction zone and within the incoming Pacific plate. The samples are from International Ocean Discovery Program Expeditions 375 and 372; Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 329; Ocean Drilling Program Leg 181; and Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 90. All 1005 samples, resulting in a total number of ~20,200 individual measurements, were analyzed for major element compositions with the electron microprobe. A subset of 419 samples, resulting in a total number of ~1820 individual glass shard analyses, were analyzed for trace element compositions using the laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. In total, ~640 samples were identified as primary ash layers based on their homogeneous geochemistry, visual appearance in the core pictures, and high amount of volcanic glass. Based on the biostratigraphy presented in the cruise reports and subsequent work, we can distinguish between Quaternary- and Neogene-derived tephras. The tephra layers of Quaternary age are mostly of rhyolitic composition with occasional andesitic, dacitic, and trachytic glass shards. The Neogene tephras are mostly of basaltic andesite, andesitic, and rhyolitic composition, with a few basaltic and trachytic tephras. Tephras of both age groups follow the calc-alkaline series trend with a tendency to shift into the high-K calc-alkaline series for tephras with 〉70 wt% SiO2.

    Description: Defining a precise timeline for past eruptions from explosive volcanoes in continental arcs is imperative to forecast future hazards and mitigate volcanic disasters in these often densely populated regions. However, establishing reliable ages for Quaternary eruptions in the Central American Volcanic Arc has been challenging due to the common lack or alteration of suitable K-rich phases for 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, but also from their position in time beyond the reach of 14C dating. This especially holds for the active Amatitlán caldera in Guatemala, from which at least six explosive silicic eruptions have produced tephra blanketing neighboring regions that are today inhabited by millions of people. Zircon, a common datable accessory mineral in Amatitlán caldera magmas, is used here to retrieve eruption ages by applying the novel zircon double-dating method (ZDD) that integrates 238U–230Th disequilibrium dating and (U–Th)/He thermochronology. This approach yielded the first-ever radioisotopic ages of 24 ± 3 ka and 48 ± 6 ka (1σ), respectively, of two of Amatitlán caldera's most recent eruptions (J-tephra and E-tephra). Remarkably, both zircon crystallization and ZDD eruption ages for the older and voluminous T-tephra and L-tephra units significantly post-date existing plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar dates by ca. 26 and 70 kyr, respectively. The ZDD eruption age for T-tephra is 93 ± 4 ka, whereas zircon crystallization ages for L-tephra yield a maximum model eruption age of ca. 124 ka. The strong eruption age divergence between ZDD and plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar dating argues for the presence of inherited or xenocrystic plagioclase in Amatitlán caldera eruptive products. Statistical analysis based on the updated eruptive history suggests a recurrence interval of ca. 17 kyr, which is significantly shorter than previously estimated. The new age data, thus, suggest a more frequent eruptive activity of Amatitlán caldera than formerly thought and underscores the necessity to better understand the current underlying magmatic system and to constrain its past eruptive history more precisely.

    Description: The Tierra Blanca (TB) eruptive suite comprises the last four major eruptions of Ilopango caldera in El Salvador (≤45 ka), including the youngest Tierra Blanca Joven eruption (TBJ; ∼106 km3): the most voluminous event during the Holocene in Central America. Despite the protracted and productive history of explosive silicic eruptions at Ilopango caldera, many aspects regarding the longevity and the prevailing physicochemical conditions of the underlying magmatic system remain unknown. Zircon 238U-230Th geochronology of the TB suite (TBJ, TB2, TB3, and TB4) reveals a continuous and overlapping crystallization history among individual eruptions, suggesting persistent melt presence in thermally and compositionally distinct magma reservoirs over the last ca. 80 kyr. The longevity of zircon is in contrast to previously determined crystallization timescales of 〈10 kyr for major mineral phases in TBJ. This dichotomy is explained by a process of rhyolitic melt segregation from a crystal-rich refractory residue that incorporates zircon, whereas a new generation of major mineral phases crystallized shortly before eruption. Ti-in-zircon temperatures and amphibole geothermobarometry suggest that rhyolitic melt was extracted from different storage zones of the magma reservoir as indicated by distinct but synchronous thermochemical zircon histories among the TB suite eruptions. Zircon from TBJ and TB2 suggests magma differentiation within deeper and hotter parts of the reservoir, whereas zircon from TB3 and TB4 instead hints at crystallization in comparatively shallower and cooler domains. The assembly of the voluminous TBJ magma reservoir was also likely enhanced by cannibalization of hydrothermally altered components as suggested by low-δ18O values in zircon (+4.5 ± 0.3‰).
