Description: Samples of magnesium AZ31 alloys are deformed in compression at room temperature under a strain rate of 1?10 ?3 s ?1 . The initial texture with respect to the loading direction is favorable for {10-12} extension twinning during the deformation. At an engineering strain of 2.75%, many extension twins are found to be connected with each other at grain boundaries, forming cross grain boundary twin pairs. Some have low positive or even negative Schmid factors (SFs). The variant selection of them are interpreted in terms of shear accommodations. The observed twin variants require the least or no accommodation through deformation modes with high CRSSs, but the most or more accommodation through those with low CRSSs.

Description: 〈p〉Contemporary models of intrafibrillar mineralization mechanisms are established using collagen fibrils as templates without considering the contribution from collagen-bound apatite nucleation inhibitors. However, collagen matrices destined for mineralization in vertebrates contain bound matrix proteins for intrafibrillar mineralization. Negatively charged, high–molecular weight polycarboxylic acid is cross-linked to reconstituted collagen to create a model for examining the contribution of collagen-ligand interaction to intrafibrillar mineralization. Cryogenic electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulation show that, after cross-linking to collagen, the bound polyelectrolyte caches prenucleation cluster singlets into chain-like aggregates along the fibrillar surface to increase the pool of mineralization precursors available for intrafibrillar mineralization. Higher-quality mineralized scaffolds with better biomechanical properties are achieved compared with mineralization of unmodified scaffolds in polyelectrolyte-stabilized mineralization solution. Collagen-ligand interaction provides insights on the genesis of heterogeneously mineralized tissues and the potential causes of ectopic calcification in nonmineralized body tissues.〈/p〉

Description: Little is known about the innate defense mechanisms of the male reproductive tract. We cloned a 385-base pair complementary DNA and its genomic DNA named Bin1b that is exclusively expressed in the caput region of the rat epididymis and that is responsible for sperm maturation, storage, and protection. Bin1b exhibits structural characteristics and antimicrobial activity similar to that of cationic antimicrobial peptides, beta-defensins. Bin1b is maximally expressed when the rats are sexually mature and can be up-regulated by inflammation. Bin1b appears to be a natural epididymis-specific antimicrobial peptide that plays a role in reproductive tract host defense and male fertility.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Li, P -- Chan, H C -- He, B -- So, S C -- Chung, Y W -- Shang, Q -- Zhang, Y D -- Zhang, Y L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Mar 2;291(5509):1783-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉State Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 320, Yue-Yang Road, Shanghai 200031, China.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11230693" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Vertical self-priming pump has numerous advantages and has been widely used in industrial and agricultural areas. Nevertheless, impeller in single-stage self-priming pump bears large diameter and huge friction loss in the delivery of high-lift fluid, and enhanced requirement for sealing capacity meanwhile generates greater increment of power loss from sealing auxiliary-impeller and sealing ring. Both of these have resulted in low efficiency in operation, to the extent of imposing restriction on the further application of self-priming pump. In this paper, a new design of double-stage vertical self-priming pump with two impellers settled back to back was put forward to cover the shortfalls above. The internal flow field was calculated adopting realizable k-ε turbulence model in commercial CFD software Fluent and performance prediction was conducted. Concurrently, two-phase flow inside this self-priming pump without backflow hole was calculated by gas-liquid two-phase unsteady simu...

Description: The reference crop evapotranspiration ( ET 0 ) is an important parameter for calculating crop water requirement. Based on meteorological data of nearly 50 years from 6 meteorological stations in Hangjiahu area, the reference crop evapotranspiration is calculated by using the Penman-Monteith method recommended by Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO). By using Geographical Information System (GIS) spatial analysis function, the maps of reference crop evapotranspiration with meteorological parameters used in the analysis are obtained by inverse distance weighted interpolation method. The results show that the mean values of ET 0 range from 811.2 to 1039.9 mm, and it decreases from eastern to western of the study area. ET 0 values of the plain area are higher than that of the mountain area, which shows the same pattern as the spatial distribution trend of temperature trend.

Notes: Until now, the origin of hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Nd-Fe-B alloys with lower Nd concentration is not clear. In this paper, the phase compositions of rapidly quenched Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloys annealed under different conditions have been studied by using zero-field spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mössbauer effect (ME) techniques. It is found that there exists a certain amount of Nd2Fe14B phase in the samples annealed at 960 °C and ingot alloy, which have poor hard magnetic properties; while, the sample annealed under optimal condition consists only of bct-Fe3B as the main phase and a small amount of a-Fe. However, the ME result indicates that about 5 at. % Fe atoms in FeIII (8 g) site of bct-Fe3B have been replaced by Nd atoms; the NMR result demonstrates that 11B NMR spectrum is the characteristic peak of bct-Fe3B, but it broadens asymmetrically to the high frequency side, which is due to the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms. The amplitude of radio frequency (rf) excitation field required to get the maximum 11B spin-echo signal from bct-Fe3B in the sample annealed at 839 °C is only about one third as much as that required to excite the 11B in the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms in the sample annealed at 670 °C for a short time, which implies the latter has a larger coercivity field than the former. It is concluded that the origin of hard magnetic properties of Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloy is not related to the 2:14:1 phase, but to the change of bct-Fe3B itself.

Notes: The Fe–B amorphous alloys powders with high boron concentration can be prepared by borohydride reduction (BHR). By adjusting technological factors, the Fe100−xBx amorphous powders with compositions ranging from x=17 to 40 can be easily obtained, but it is difficult to make the amorphous ribbons with such a high B concentration by using rapidly quenched technique, which can usually obtain the amorphous ribbons with the compositions ranging from x=12 to 25. Up to now, there are different points of view about if the short range order (SRO) in the Fe–B amorphous powders prepared by the BHR around room temperature is the same with that in the amorphous ribbons made by rapidly quenched and vapor depositing techniques. In this paper, the SRO in Fe100−xBx amorphous powders with various boron concentration prepared by the BHR have been studied by the zero field spin echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. It was shown that the types of SRO in these samples vary with the B concentration. There exist Fe3B- and Fe2B-like SRO and a small amount of α-Fe in the samples with lower B concentration, while there are Fe3B- and FeB-like SRO in the alloys with higher B concentration. Fe3B-like SRO, however, only exists in the amorphous ribbons obtained by rapidly quenched method. It can be concluded that there are different types of SRO in the amorphous alloys prepared by different methods. This conclusion can explain the reason why the average hyperfine field at Fe sites deceases with the B concentration increasing.

Notes: In order to study the location of hydrogen atoms and the effects of their insertion into R2Fe17, spin–echo NMR experiments have been carried out on the hexagonal Y2Fe17Hx (x=0, 3.0, 4.7), rhombohedral Sm2Fe17Hx (x=0, 1.7, 5.7), and mixed-phase Gd2Fe17Hx (x=0, 2.3, 5.8) compounds. 1H and 89Y spectra obtained from Y2Fe17Hx clearly demonstrate that the hydrogenation process is reversible upon vacuum annealing. For both Y2Fe17Hx and Sm2Fe17Hx, the 1H spectra show two broad peaks; the peaks are tentatively assigned to H atoms in the tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial sites, and a hydrogen filling scheme is proposed. For Gd2Fe17Hx, a single broad 1H peak near 70 MHz is observed; application of an external magnetic field indicates that the hyperfine field has the same direction as the net magnetization. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
