    Description: Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) data obtained from February 1979-November 1981 are analyzed in order to evaluate the spatial extent and frequency occurrence of cirrus clouds. The capabilities of the SAGE measurement system which has a field of view of 100 sq km are discussed. The frequency of occurrence of the cirrus clouds and the frequency penetration of the clouds to fixed altitudes of 5, 7, and 9 km, and to altitudes of 1, 3 and 5 km below the troposphere are examined. It is observed that optically thick cirrus clouds form most frequently in the midlatitudes over the equator, with distinct minima near latitude bands of 20-30 deg north and south; height penetrations to 7 km occur 60 percent of the time in upper latitudes and drop to 30 percent over the tropics. The SAGE data are compared with selective chopper radiometer data and good correlation in shape and seasonal movement is displayed. The seasonal geographical distributions of cirrus clouds in regions of rising moist air associated with low-level convergence zones are described.

    Description: Results are presented from analyses that use SAGE (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment) data to determine the spatial extent and frequency of cirrus clouds over much of the earth's surface. The analyses pertain to a period of 15 months extending from February 1979 to April 1980. The results are compared with those from a climatology of ground-based cirrus cloud observations (Hahn et al., 1982). It is found that optically thick cirrus clouds are most often found in the midlatitudes and over the tropics, with distinct minima near the + or - 20 to 30 deg latitude bands. On the other hand, thin cirrus clouds occur much less often than the optically thick cirrus clouds. The comparison of the SAGE cirrus cloud results made zonally with those obtained from ocean-surface-based observations reveals general agreement. Tropospheric observational opportunities for a limb sounding satellite sensor, as evidenced by successful penetrations to 7 km, were found to occur approximately 60 percent of the time in the higher latitudes, falling to a low of 30 percent over the tropics.

    Description: The effects of atmospheric stability on the dispersion of primary pollutants such as CO, total hydrocarbons (THC), and NO were examined in St. Louis. The pollutant levels were measured at 25 stations, temperature at 12 stations at 5 and 30 m height, and wind speed and direction at the 30 m level at 12 stations. Correlation coefficients were generated for pairs of the vertical temperature differences, the log of the mean wind speed reciprocal, the bulk Richardson number, and specific pollutant concentrations. A high correlation was obtained between the thermal stability and the urban concentration of the primary pollutants in the lowest part of the boundary layer. A restricted nighttime dispersion of the pollutants was observed, indicating near-ground increased concentrations at times when the source emissions actually decrease.

    Description: The time-periodic variations in stratospheric zonal mean ozone number density are examined with emphasis on annual and semi-annual oscillations. The data base for this analysis is the ozone observation from the SAGE II satellite instrument. A multiple linear regression method is adopted for the analysis. The results show that the amplitudes and phases of the time-periodic ozone variations are functions of altitude and latitude.

    Description: A single cell Eulerian photochemical air quality simulation model was developed and validated for selected days of the 1976 St. Louis Regional Air Pollution Study (RAPS) data sets; parameterizations of variables in the model and validation studies using the model are discussed. Good agreement was obtained between measured and modeled concentrations of NO, CO, and NO2 for all days simulated. The maximum concentration of O3 was also predicted well. Predicted species concentrations were relatively insensitive to small variations in CO and NOx emissions and to the concentrations of species which are entrained as the mixed layer rises.

    Description: An investigation was conducted of new techniques used to determine the complete transonic drag characteristics of a series of free-flight drop-test models using principally radar tracking data. The full capabilities of the radar tracking and meteorological measurement systems were utilized. In addition, preflight trajectory design, exact kinematic equations, and visual-analytical filtering procedures were employed. The results of this study were compared with the results obtained from analysis of the onboard, accelerometer and pressure sensor data of the only drop-test model that was instrumented. The accelerometer-pressure drag curve was approximated by the radar-data drag curve. However, a small amplitude oscillation on the latter curve precluded a precise definition of its drag rise.

    Description: A primitive-variable general circulation model of the ocean was formulated in which fast external gravity waves are suppressed with rigid-lid surface constraint pressires which also provide a means for simulating the effects of large-scale free-surface topography. The surface pressure method is simpler to apply than the conventional stream function models, and the resulting model can be applied to both global ocean and limited region situations. Strengths and weaknesses of the model are also presented.
