Environmental Chemistry, 14(7), 425, https://doi.org/10.1071/EN17130
    Publication Date: 2024-03-15
Description: The potential impacts of seawater acidification on the concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), dissolved acrylic acid (AAd) and various volatile halocarbons, including CH3Cl, CHBr3, CH2Br2, CHBr2Cl, CHBrCl2 and CH3I, were examined during a laboratory CO2 perturbation experiment for the microalgae Phaeocystis globosa and Nitzschia closterium. The microalgae were exposed to ambient CO2 conditions (390–540 µatm; 1 µatm = 0.1 Pa) and to projected concentrations for the end of the century (760–1000 µatm, high carbon (HC)). The growth rate of the two species remained unaffected by elevated CO2. Results showed a 48 and 37 % decline in the DMS concentration normalised to cell density in P. globosa and N. closterium cultures in the HC treatment compared with the ambient treatment. No significant difference was observed for DMSPp and DMSPd in the two microalgae cultures between the two CO2 levels. The mean AAd concentrations in the P. globosa culture showed a 28 % decline in the HC treatment. By contrast, the cell-normalised concentrations of AAd in the HC treatment were 45 % lower than in the ambient treatment in N. closterium cultures. No CO2-induced effects were observed for CH3Cl, CHBr3, CHBr2Cl, CHBrCl2 and CH3I, but cell-normalised concentrations of CH2Br2 in N. closterium cultures showed a 32 % decline in the HC treatment relative to the ambient level. These results show that the metabolism processes responsible for the production of climate-active gases in phytoplankton may be affected by high CO2 levels. There may be a potential delay in the responses of trace gas emissions to elevated pCO2.

Notes: In this paper, a colloidal processing route was adopted to disperse multi-walledcarbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into alumina powders homogenously. Alumina matrix compositescontaining 0.1 to 2 weight percent of MWNTs were successfully fabricated by pressureless sintering. Also, 1wt% MWNTs-alumina composites were prepared by hot pressing for comparison. It wasfound that when the sample was sintered at 1450oC, the addition of 1wt% carbon nanotubes led to10% increase in bending strength compared with monolithic alumina. The reinforcementmechanism was discussed based on the microstructure investigation. The broken nanotubes andpullout of MWNTs at interfaces are efficient in transferring the load from the alumina matrix to thenanotubes, leading to the improvement of the mechanical properties

Notes: The tension of warp and weft run through the whole weaving process in knitted carpetweaving equipment. The performance of delivering warp mechanism and guiding weft mechanismin this kind of equipment influences the quality of carpet directly. A self-adjusting delivering warpmechanism is designed in this thesis, which is used in knitted carpet weaving equipment or othertextile equipment that delivers warp by warp-spindle and demands even warp tension. Theself-adjusting delivering warp mechanism consists of the device for setting and detecting warptension, the device for driving warp-spindle in different speed, and the device for transmittingwarp-spindle movement. The device for setting and detecting warp tension can determineinitialization tension of warp, according to the technical requirements, can detect and feed backwarp tension in real time. The device for driving warp-spindle in different speed makes the rotatingspeed of warp-spindle change according to the warp tension. The self-adjusting delivering warpmechanism realizes the function on controlling the rotating speed of warp-spindle in closed loop, and on stabilizing delivering warp tension

Notes: In this paper, ZnO films are deposited on Freestanding Thick Diamond (FTDF) byplasma-assisted Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD). Diethyl zinc, O2, and N2Oare applied as precursors and different substrate temperatures are used to achieve high quality ZnOfilms. The influence of substrate temperature on the properties of ZnO films is systematicallyinvestigated by X-ray diffraction, Hall measurements, and electron probe microanalysis.Experimental results demonstrate that ZnO films deposited at 600°C and 73Pa displays fine electricalquality and Zn/O atomic ratio plays an important role in the electrical property of ZnO films

Notes: SiC/ZTM nanocomposites were prepared, and the influence of nanosized SiC additionon the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. It was found that the additionof nanosized SiC significantly retarded the matrix grain growth, making the microstructure muchfiner and more uniform. This led to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties. Andfurther enhancement in the mechanical property can be achieved through the addition of mulliteseeds in the starting powder and improving the distribution homogeneity of SiC nanoparticles inthe matrix

Notes: The composite materials, 3Y-TZP added with TiN or/and Al2O3 particles, were fabricatedby hot-pressing techniques. The effect of TiN and Al2O3 on the low temperature degradation of3Y-TZP was investigated. It is shown that both TiN and Al2O3 can inhibit t-m transformation of3Y-TZP and prevent the transformation from propagating into the specimen interiors when aged at alow temperature. The inhibition to the low temperature degradation of 3Y-TZP by Al2O3 is moresensitive to the aged temperature than by TiN. Compared with Al2O3, TiN is more available toinhibit t-m transformation on aged surfaces. The degradation resistance of 3Y-TZP codoped by TiNand Al2O3 is stronger than that of 3Y-TZP dispersed only by TiN or Al2O3

Notes: The critical current versus tensile strain characteristics of mono- and multi-filamentBi-2223 tapes with Ag and AgMn and AgMg sheath has been studied. The strain tolerance ε0.9 ofnaked mono- and 37-filament Bi-2223 tapes were 0.13% and 0.20%, respectively. Ag sheathincreased the strain tolerance ε0.9 of critical current by 0.08% and 0.16% for mono-filament and37-filament Bi-2223/Ag tapes. The ε0.9 of Bi-2223 with Ag and AgMn and AgMg sheath increasedwith filament number. AgMn and AgMg sheath, increasing ε0.9 of Bi-2223 tapes by 0.07-0.09%, areeffective to improve strain tolerance of critical current for multifilamentary Bi-2223 tapes
