Notes: Abstract The molecular structure of antigens recognized exclusively by T cells, such as minor histocompatibility antigens and some antigens that provoke autoimmune responses, has proved difficult to determine. Recently, several antigens induced on tumor cells by mutagen treatment have been cloned by transfection of genomic DNA libraries into P1.HTR cells, screening for antigen expression using T-cell clones, and subsequent recovery of the integrated DNA by cosmid rescue. We have modified this techniques and have stably transfected P1. HTR cell lines with polyoma T antigen, which allows episomal replication of the shuttle vector, pCDM8. Using pCDM8-CAT constructs, we have determined the frequency of transfection and plasmid copies taken up per cell under optimal transfection conditions. Using a pCDM8 construct which expresses the tumor-specific antigen, P91A (pCDM8-tum-), that is recognized by a T-cell clone, we have found that cells transfected with this antigen can be recognized by the T-cell clone when they are present at only 1%–3% of a mixed population. Progeny of a single cell transfected with pCDM8-tum-: pCDM8-CAT at proportions of 1:10, 1:25, and 1:50 are recognized by the T-cell clone. Furthermore, Hirt extracted plasmid DNA from transfectants expressing the tum- antigen can be amplified in bacteria, transfected back into P1.HTR recipients, and recognized by the T-cell clone. This approach should enable reasonably rapid screening of cDNA libraries for even relatively low abundance messages encoding, for example, minor histocompatibility and allonatigens, and allow their subsequent cloning.

Notes: The Offset Wenner resistivity sounding system provides for the extrapolation of the Wenner resistivity curve. The extrapolation technique was applied to data measured in the Solomon Islands and it is shown to be unreliable. An accurate method of predicting the reliability of extrapolation using measured resistances could not be found.

Notes: We have studied the Er and ErSi2 contacts on p-Si. A correlation is found between the barrier height and the presence of an interfacial oxide layer. Samples with a thin interfacial oxide (∼ 3 A(ring)) exhibit a barrier height of 0.68 eV. In contrast, samples without any detectable interfacial oxide show a higher barrier height of ∼0.8 eV. The barrier heights were determined by current-voltage measurements and the thicknesses of the interfacial oxide were measured by the 16O(d,α)14 N nuclear reaction technique.

Notes: [Auszug] GRO J1655-40 was first detected on 27 July 1994 with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE)4 on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). The transient source was clearly distinguishable from nearby hard X-ray sources such as OAO 1657 -4152. The source was located ...

Notes: Summary Osteoblast-like and osteoclast-like cells freed from neonatal calvaria by sequential enzymatic digestion after 6–7 days in culture were placed in diffusion chambers and implanted in the peritoneal cavities of CD-1 mice. About half of the chambers also contained a dead calvarium to test for the need of an “inducer.” After 20 days, 11 of 18 chambers containing the osteoblast-like cells formed large foci of mineralized bone that corresponded to alkaline phosphatase activity throughout the chambers. Moreover, only type I (i.e., bone) collagen was formed. Occasional deposits of bone were found in only 3 of 22 chambers containing the osteoclast-like cells. The presence of dead bone did not affect any of the results. These data confirm the osteoblast-like nature of the isolated cell populations and demonstrate that these cells retain their differentiated function in culture.

Notes: Abstract We study the hadronic transverse energy (E T ) accompanyingZ 0 events in $$p\bar p$$ interactions and compare our result with the observedE T distribution in minimum bias events. We expect excess transverse energy to accompanyZ 0's. This effect can also be probed experimentally using Drell-Yan lepton pairs and represents an interesting way to probe the multi-gluon structure of QCD.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the lepton spectrum inpp collisions from the production and semileptonic decay ofΛ c andΛ b , and find limits on their production cross sections. Total cross sections in excess of 1 mb forΛ c and 2 1/2μb forΛ b violate the experimental fact that (μ/π)≲10−4. Abundant production ofΛ c has led to speculations on the existence of a large intrinsic charm sea inside the proton. We discuss alternative ways of probing such a structure inside the proton: jets opposite highp T direct photons and central production of ψ.

Notes: Abstract A detailed study of the critical behaviour of the Ising model in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions is made using an approximate real space renormalization transformation which involves block spins. The critical indices α, β, η, and ν are calculated and compared with previous results, as is the critical couplingy c. The method is shown to respect one of the scaling relations, and in 1+1D some exact results are reproduced (y c=1, ν=1).
