Notes: In a space-time admitting cyclic and nonspacelike Killing symmetries the commutation properties of the Killing vectors are examined. It is shown that cyclic and null Killing vectors can be noncommuting only if a Killing vector of stationarity is also admitted. Two consequences of this commutativity are also discussed.

Notes: It is shown that the proofs of a series of classical singularity theorems of general relativity can be modified such that these theorems also state the maximality of the incomplete nonspacelike geodesics. Since along maximal incomplete nonspacelike geodesics with affine parameter u certain parts of the tidal curvature cannot blow up faster than (u¯−u)−2, where u¯ is the parameter value until which the geodesics cannot be extended, the classical singularity theorems do restrict the behavior of the curvature.

Notes: Abstract For mass isolation of plant metaphase chromosomes, cultured cells of wheat (Triticum monococcum) and parsley (Petroselinum hortense) were synchronized by hydroxyurea and colchicine treatment. This synchronization procedure resulted in high mitotic synchrony, especially in suspension cultures of parsley in which 80% of the cells were found to be at the metaphase stage. Mitotic protoplasts isolated from these synchronized cell cultures served as a source for isolation of chromosomes. The described isolation and purification method yielded relatively pure chromosome suspension. The uptake of the isolated plant chromosomes into recipient wheat, parsley, and maize protoplasts was induced by polyethylene-glycol treatment. Cytological studies provided evidences for uptake of plant chromosomes into plant protoplasts.

Notes: Abstract Protoplasts were isolated from leaf mesophyll and cell suspensions of two accessions of Stylosanthes guianensis (Aubl.), a tropical forage legume. When cultured in VKM liquid culture medium, both types of protoplasts divided at a rate of 4–8%, and subsequently formed cell colonies. Protoplast-derived calluses produced numerous shoots when transferred to regeneration medium. Regenerated shoots could be easily rooted, and plantlets were transferred to soil. The effects of several factors on the efficiency of this protoplast system have been investigated.

Notes: Abstract Secular period changes of one hundred northern Cepheids are investigated with the help of O−C diagrams. With the classical Cepheids the rate of observed period changes is in good agreement with that determined from stellar evolution theory. The period noise cannot mask the evolutionary period changes especially in longer period Cepheids for which the occurrence of parabolic O−C graphs is unusually frequent.

Notes: Abstract A space-time is both a Riemannian manifold and a causal space. These structures give restrictions on one another. In this paper we consider restrictions determined by the causal structure on the manifold's geometry. It is shown in particular that the conformai electric part of the curvature must satisfy interesting nonlocal conditions.

Notes: Abstract We show that the causal structure determines a volume measurability up to sets of zero measure. In space-time manifolds this causal measurability, apart from sets of zero measure, agrees with the a priori four-dimensional Lebesgue measurability, provided the strong causality condition holds.
