Description: Ti6Al4V is known as difficult-to-cut material due to its inherent properties such as high hot hardness, low thermal conductivity and high chemical reactivity. Though, Ti6Al4V is utilized by industrial sectors such as aeronautics, energy generation, petrochemical and bio-medical etc. For the metal cutting community, competent and cost-effective machining of Ti6Al4V is a challenging task. To optimize cost and machining performance for the machining of Ti6Al4V, finite element based cutting simulation can be a very useful tool. The aim of this paper is to develop a finite element machining model for the simulation of Ti6Al4V machining process. The study incorporates material constitutive models namely Power Law (PL) and Johnson – Cook (JC) material models to mimic the mechanical behaviour of Ti6Al4V. The study investigates cutting temperatures, cutting forces, stresses, and plastic strains with respect to different PL and JC material models with associated parameters. In addition, t...

Description: The modified 410-1Mo stainless steel has been developed with higher tensile strength and elongation compared to the standard 410 stainless steel. This paper reports the influence of austenitizing temperature on the microstructure, hardness, impact resistance and corrosion resistance of the modified 410-1Mo steel. The steel samples were prepared by a process sequence of induction melting, hot forging, annealing, hardening, and tempering. The microstructure of the tempered steels revealed additional phase of delta ferrite at pre-austenitizing temperatures of 950 to 1050 °C and disappeared at a temperature of 1100 °C. The steels which underwent pre-austenitizing at 1100 °C showed the largest sized lath martensite and the largest amount of retained austenite. The tempered steels maintained hardness at austenitizing temperatures of 950 °C to 1000 °C and showed an increasing hardness at austenitizing temperatures from 1000 to 1100 °C. At a range of austenitizing temperatures, it was i...

Description: The Fe-13Cr-3Mo-3Ni stainless steels are modified into martensitic stainless steels for steam turbine blades application. The working temperature of steam turbine was around 600 – 700 °C. The improvement properties of turbine blade material is necessary to maintain steam turbine work. The previous research revealed that it has corrosion resistance of Fe-13Cr-3Mo-3Ni which is better than 13Cr stainless steels in the chloride environment. In this work, the effect of heat treatment on microstructure and hardness of Fe-13Cr-3Mo-3Ni stainless steels has been studied. The steel was prepared by induction melting followed by hot forging. The steels were austenitized at 1000, 1050, and 1100 °C for 1 hour and were tempered at 600, 650, and 700 °C for 1 hour. The steels were then subjected to metallographic observation and hardness test of Rockwell C. The optimal heat treatment of Fe-13Cr-3Mo-3Ni was carried out austenitized in 1050 °C and tempered in 600 – 700 °C.

Notes: Summary Ferric tungstate sols were prepared by the dialysis of the reaction products obtained after mixing varying amounts of 0.1 M sodium tungstate and 1.0 M ferric chloride. The sols on further dialysis gave gels. The times of setting of the gels were found to be dependent on the period of dialysis as well as on the ratio Wo4−/Fe+++. The variations in viscosity and conductivity were determined. It was found that the changes in viscosity were more pronounced than the conductance at the sol-gel transformation stage. The plots of the log time of setting against period of dialysis and the plots of log relative variations in viscosity and conductivity gave curves which in the major part were linear pointing towards the thixotropic nature of these gels. The variations in pH under similar condition were found to be small.

Notes: Investigations have been carried out to determine the complex ion formation between cuprous chloride and hydrochloric acid and cuprous chloride and potassium chloride in the aqueous and solid phase. An indirect method to determine the concentration of the components in the solid phase was employed due to the highly oxidisable nature of cuprous ions. Rectangular curves were drawn. In the case of hydrochloric acid, complexes like H2CuCl3 and H3CuCl4 are formed in the liquid phase while H2CuCl3; H3CuCl4 are formed in the solid phase. For potassium chloride, complexes like K3CuCl4 and K2CuCl3 were found to exist in the aqueous phase and KCuCl2 and K2CuCl3 were obtained in the solid phase. The amount of cuprous chloride going into solution with increasing amount of KCl was found to be lesser for HCl under identical conditions.

    Description: The Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) on Spirit has studied the mineralogy and thermophysical properties at Gusev crater. Undisturbed soil spectra show evidence for minor carbonates and bound water. Rocks are olivinerich basalts with varying degrees of dust and other coatings. Dark-toned soils observed on disturbed surfaces may be derived from rocks and have derived mineralogy (+/-5 to 10%) of 45% pyroxene (20% Ca-rich pyroxene and 25% pigeonite), 40% sodic to intermediate plagioclase, and 15% olivine (forsterite 45% +/-5 to 10). Two spectrally distinct coatings are observed on rocks, a possible indicator of the interaction of water, rock, and airfall dust. Diurnal temperature data indicate particle sizes from 40 to 80 microm in hollows to approximately 0.5 to 3 mm in soils.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Christensen, P R -- Ruff, S W -- Fergason, R L -- Knudson, A T -- Anwar, S -- Arvidson, R E -- Bandfield, J L -- Blaney, D L -- Budney, C -- Calvin, W M -- Glotch, T D -- Golombek, M P -- Gorelick, N -- Graff, T G -- Hamilton, V E -- Hayes, A -- Johnson, J R -- McSween, H Y Jr -- Mehall, G L -- Mehall, L K -- Moersch, J E -- Morris, R V -- Rogers, A D -- Smith, M D -- Squyres, S W -- Wolff, M J -- Wyatt, M B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2004 Aug 6;305(5685):837-42.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Geological Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA. phil.christensen@asu.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15297667" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) on Opportunity investigated the mineral abundances and compositions of outcrops, rocks, and soils at Meridiani Planum. Coarse crystalline hematite and olivine-rich basaltic sands were observed as predicted from orbital TES spectroscopy. Outcrops of aqueous origin are composed of 15 to 35% by volume magnesium and calcium sulfates [a high-silica component modeled as a combination of glass, feldspar, and sheet silicates (approximately 20 to 30%)], and hematite; only minor jarosite is identified in Mini-TES spectra. Mini-TES spectra show only a hematite signature in the millimeter-sized spherules. Basaltic materials have more plagioclase than pyroxene, contain olivine, and are similar in inferred mineral composition to basalt mapped from orbit. Bounce rock is dominated by clinopyroxene and is close in inferred mineral composition to the basaltic martian meteorites. Bright wind streak material matches global dust. Waterlain rocks covered by unaltered basaltic sands suggest a change from an aqueous environment to one dominated by physical weathering.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Christensen, P R -- Wyatt, M B -- Glotch, T D -- Rogers, A D -- Anwar, S -- Arvidson, R E -- Bandfield, J L -- Blaney, D L -- Budney, C -- Calvin, W M -- Fallacaro, A -- Fergason, R L -- Gorelick, N -- Graff, T G -- Hamilton, V E -- Hayes, A G -- Johnson, J R -- Knudson, A T -- McSween, H Y Jr -- Mehall, G L -- Mehall, L K -- Moersch, J E -- Morris, R V -- Smith, M D -- Squyres, S W -- Ruff, S W -- Wolff, M J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2004 Dec 3;306(5702):1733-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Geological Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA. phil.christensen@asu.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15576609" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Titanium and its alloys e.g. Ti6Al4V have widespread applications in aerospace, automotive and medical industry. At the same time titanium and its alloys are regarded as difficult to machine materials due to their high strength and low thermal conductivity. Significant efforts have been dispensed to improve the accuracy of the machining processes for Ti6Al4V. The current study present the use of the rotary ultrasonic drilling (RUD) process for machining high quality holes in Ti6Al4V. The study takes into account the effects of the main RUD input parameters including spindle speed, ultrasonic power, feed rate and tool diameter on the key output responses related to the accuracy of the drilled holes including cylindricity and overcut errors. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to study the influence of the input parameters on cylindricity and overcut error. Later, regression models were developed to find the optimal set of input parameters to minimize the cylindricity and ov...
