    Notes: The exoerythrocytic forms of Plasmodium gallinaceum in thin sections of infected tissue cultures have been examined with the electron microscope. It was seen that important changes occur in the fine structure of the parasite during the various phases of the cycle. The cytoplasm of the merozoites at the beginning and at the end of each cycle shows a great electron density due to a fine granulation. Larger granules are found at one pole of the parasite. The merozoites have a large nucleus in the center, and an oval body of great electron density at one pole, the significance of which is unknown. Short canaliculi can also be seen in the cytoplasm, but no mitochondria have been found.The cytoplasm of the schizonts shows a low electron density. It contains small particles scattered irregularly throughout its whole mass. The nuclei are not well defined; the oval body observed in the merozoites apparently has disappeared. Short canaliculi are present everywhere; however, mitochondria could not be identified with certainty.In the final phase of the cycle, in the rosette formations, the cytoplasm assumes again the fine granular structure. The future merozoites are grouped around a cytoplasmic core, with which they are directly connected. The whole segmenter is situated in a vacuole formation. In cross sections of the merozoites an opening in the central pole has been observed.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Merozoites from Plasmodiunz gallinaceum (exoerythrocytic forms) have been observed with the electron microscope in thin sections of infected tissue cultures. When still in segmenter formation, at the end of the intracellular cycle, a small canaliculum can be observed in their proximal part which runs from the nuclear region down into the cytoplasmic core of the segmenter, where, in some sections, it continues directly into the endoplasmic reticulum of the core.Large, vacuole-like empty spaces in the merozoites recall swollen mitochondria. They show short villi at the periphery, instead of the typical cristae; they resemble the mitochondria of starved tissue cells.In the distal pole of the merozoites, one or two oval bodies of great electron density are present, among several smaller granules, both structures still being of unknown significance. The rest of the cytoplasm is of great electron density and shows a fine granulation.In the young trophozoites the oval bodies and the smaller granules disappear. Also, mitochondria are not found just after parasites enter a cell. These, however, reappear soon.The contact of the trophozoites with the cytoplasm of the host is intimate. Both surface membranes of the parasite are visible, mostly intact, but showing also openings which are considered artifacts, since no images have been obtained which indicate a passage of material through them from the host to the parasite. It is believed, however, that the parasite takes up material from the host through the membranes by an osmotic process. The fading of the electron density and the greater distance between the particles of its cytoplasm in the growing parasite seem to prove this. The particles which are responsible for the electron density of the merozoites, and of the young trophozoites, do not differ in their aspect from the RNA particles of the host cells.The nucleus, which in the merozoites and in the very first intracellular stages shows a homogenous fine and dense granulation, develops a darker region later, of irregular shape, which is located eccentrically, and is considered the nucleolus of these forms.

    Description: SUMMARY When remote sensing users are asked to define their requirements for a new sensor, the big question that always arises is: will the technical specifications meet the scientific requirements? Herein, we discuss quantitative relationships between instrumental spectral and radiometric characteristics and data exploitable for lava flow subpixel temperature analysis. This study was funded within the framework of ESA activities for the IR GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) element mission requirements in 2005. Subpixel temperature retrieval from satellite infrared data is a well-established method that is well documented in the remote sensing literature. However there is little attention paid to the error analysis on estimated parameters due to atmospheric correction and radiometric accuracy of the sensor. In this study, we suggest the best spectral bands combination to estimate subpixel temperature parameters. We also demonstrate that poor atmospheric corrections may vanish the effectiveness of the most radiometrically accurate instrument.

    Description: Il presente lavoro costituisce una proposta per la formazione e la certificazione del personale che opera nel campo dei controlli e del monitoraggio dei beni monumentali ubicati in area sismica. Per bene Monumentale si intende qualsiasi manufatto con connotati a valenza storico-artistica, realizzato prevalentemente in muratura, con eventuali elementi in calcestruzzo armato e/o legno. L'articolo scaturisce da una proposta di formazione da sviluppare nell'ambito del Progetto PON denominato MASSIMO, acronimo di "Monitoraggio in Area Sismica Sistemi Monumentali" e dal quale estrarre mirati percorsi di addestramento da inserire in un preciso contesto di certificazione, secondo gli usuali livelli di conoscenza previsti dalla norma UNI EN ISO 9712 "Prove non distruttive - Qualificazione e certificazione del personale addetto alle prove non distruttive". Il contributo espone il percorso formativo relativo al progetto di ricerca e illustra le peculiarità e gli obbiettivi di alcune attività di controllo e monitoraggio basate su tecniche NDT. Per le tecniche maggiormente utilizzate nel processo di controllo, sono elencate le conoscenze minime richieste e le ore di attività necessarie, a giudizio di chi scrive, per poter giungere ad una conoscenza più o meno approfondita del metodo, in base ai diversi livelli di competenza ed al fine di sostenere gli esami di certificazione.

Infatti, gli eventi sismici che hanno interessato dagli inizi del ‘900 il territorio Italiano, hanno sistematicamente messo in risalto l’elevata vulnerabilità sismica del nostro patrimonio edilizio, ivi compresi i beni monumentali, nonché, l’inesistenza di qualsiasi attività di programmazione della manutenzione periodica ordinaria e straordinaria delle strutture sismo-resistenti, che garantiscono nel tempo la conservazione delle loro capacità di risposta alle perturbazioni esterne.Il progetto PON sul Monitoraggio in Area Sismica di SIstemi MOnumentali nasce con la prerogativa di produrre uno strumento dedicato alla tutela di strutture a valenza storico – artistica, attraverso un percorso di catalogazione, di analisi del bene inteso come elemento costituito da elementi resistenti e da materiali, di studio del sito dove la struttura è ubicata e di attività di monitoraggio.

    Description: Abstract This proposal presents two software procedures built in order to apply atmospheric and topographic corrections to spaceborne satellite images and based on radiative transfer models (6S and MODTRAN) and on DTM (Digital Terrain Model). These procedures are meant to be nested into the chain of the project ASI-Sistema Rischio Vulcanico. The first procedure results from a previous version built for atmospheric and topographic corrections for the VNIR (Visible Near Infrared) in the CIRILLO software. While the second one, for the TIR (Thermal InfraRed) spectral region, is in its testing phase. They are both written in the IDL language (ENVI environment) and they can elaborate images of all principal spaceborne sensors or of customized ones.

    Description: In this work the Thermal InfraRed (TIR) measurements of the Spin Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) geosyncronous satellite, have been used to estimate the daily evolution of the SO2 columnar abundance and ash plume optical thickness, particle effective radius and total mass of Mt. Etna volcanic plume. As test case the 24 November 2006 eruption has been considered. SEVIRI is an optical imaging radiometer characterized by 12 spectral channels, a high temporal resolution (one image every 15 minutes) and a 9 km2 footprint. The instrument’s spectral range includes the 8.7 mm band (channel 7) and the10.8 and 12.0 mm split window bands (channels 9 and 10) used respectively for SO2 retrieval and volcanic ash detection and retrievals. The SO2 columnar abundance is estimated by means of a Look-Up Table (LUT) least squares fit procedure applied to channel 7 while the ash detection and retrievals are carried out by using the Brightness Temperature Difference algorithm applied to channels 9 and 10. All the simulations needed for the retrievals have been realized using the WMO Trapani meteo station atmospheric profiles and MODTRAN 4 radiative transfer model. The SEVIRI volcanic plume SO2 and ash retrieval has been compared with the results obtained by processing the data collected during the same eruption by the MODIS sensor on board of Aqua and Terra satellites. Results show the ability of SEVIRI to recognize and estimate the daily trend of SO2 and ash in an eruptive plume; for the 24 November 2006 eruption, the SO2 and ash emissions start at about 4 am and 9 am respectively and terminate simultaneously at about 3 pm. The comparison between SEVIRI and MODIS retrievals indicates a good agreement.
