Notes: Summary Practical efficiency ofP. perniciosi was studied in France in four various orchards situated in three districts selected according to the climate: an orchard of apple-trees at Chézy; an orchard of apple-trees and cherry-trees at Brignais (Lyonnais) and an orchard of peach-trees at Mandelieu in the mediterranean region. Every time, in spite of the chemical treatments realized during the year, the real rate of parasitism increased and consequently San José scale populations has been reduced. If results are confronted with those obtained at the same time in foreign countries, it is possible to see that the climate plays the first part in the determinism ofProspaltella's efficiency, but the chemical treatments interfere also for checking the active increase of parasite.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By application of theBodenheimer's method, in taking 10°C for the threshold of the parasit development, the number of days/degrees necessary for a mean evolution ofProspaltella has been calculated. With this method, the theoretical number of generations is identical with that observed in several orchards of some countries. This method is suggested to facilitate the use ofProspaltella by fixing the time necessary to show the parasite's efficiency.

Notes: Summary An attempt to associate chemical and biological control has been realised in an orchard of apple trees contamined by San Jose Scale. Prospaltella perniciosi has been liberated two years ago in the hope of controling population densities of its host, after some years. In 1961, after one hivernal spray, unapplied in the narrow plot whereP. perniciosi was liberated, a spray program has been planned against plant-diseases: applescab and applemildew and many pests:Carpocapsa pomonella, several species of aphids and mites, Tortricids. Aphelinus mali was liberated to check an outbreak ofEriosoma lanigerum, late in the spring (june). The first experiment resulted in a sufficient control by means of fungicides and a good enough protection against insects, exceptCarpocapsa in the case of the apple variety “Reinette of Canada” (the most readily attacked by this pest). The evolution of population density ofP. perniocisi was not influenced by the control measures, but efficacity of parasitism was not yet sufficient to bring scale population beneath “tolerance-limits”.
