    Description: A grid image refractometer (GIR) has been implemented at the Nike krypton fluoride laser facility of the Naval Research Laboratory. This instrument simultaneously measures propagation angles and transmissions of UV probe rays ( λ = 263 nm, Δ t = 10 ps) refracted through plasma. We report results of the first Nike-GIR measurement on a CH plasma produced by the Nike laser pulse (∼1 ns FWHM) with the intensity of 1.1 × 10 15 W/cm 2 . The measured angles and transmissions were processed to construct spatial profiles of electron density ( n e ) and temperature ( T e ) in the underdense coronal region of the plasma. Using an inversion algorithm developed for the strongly refracted rays, the deployed GIR system probed electron densities up to 4 × 10 21 cm −3 with the density scale length of 120 μm along the plasma symmetry axis. The resulting n e and T e profiles are verified to be self-consistent with the measured quantities of the refracted probe light.

    Description: Extraction of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) to per cent level accuracy is challenging and demands an understanding of many potential systematics to an accuracy well below 1 per cent, in order to ensure that they do not combine significantly when compared to statistical error of the BAO measurement. Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 11 (DR11) reaches a distance measurement with ~1 per cent statistical error and this prompts an extensive search for all possible sub-per cent level systematic errors which could previously be safely ignored. In this paper, we analyse the potential systematics in BAO fitting methodology using mocks and data from BOSS DR10 and DR11. We demonstrate the robustness of the fiducial multipole fitting methodology to be at 0.1–0.2 per cent level with a wide range of tests in mock galaxy catalogues pre- and post-reconstruction. We also find the DR10 and DR11 data from BOSS to be robust against changes in methodology at a similar level. This systematic error budget is incorporated into the BOSS DR10 and DR11 BAO measurements. Of the wide range of changes we have investigated, we find that when fitting post-reconstructed data or mocks, the only change which has an effect 〉0.1 per cent on the best-fitting values of distance measurements is varying the order of the polynomials to describe the broad-band terms (~0.2 per cent). Finally, we compare an alternative methodology denoted as Clustering Wedges with Multipoles, and find that it is consistent with the standard approach.

    Description: Blood gas and tissue pH regulation depend on the ability of the brain to sense CO2 and/or H(+) and alter breathing appropriately, a homeostatic process called central respiratory chemosensitivity. We show that selective expression of the proton-activated receptor GPR4 in chemosensory neurons of the mouse retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) is required for CO2-stimulated breathing. Genetic deletion of GPR4 disrupted acidosis-dependent activation of RTN neurons, increased apnea frequency, and blunted ventilatory responses to CO2. Reintroduction of GPR4 into RTN neurons restored CO2-dependent RTN neuronal activation and rescued the ventilatory phenotype. Additional elimination of TASK-2 (K(2P)5), a pH-sensitive K(+) channel expressed in RTN neurons, essentially abolished the ventilatory response to CO2.     Description: We analyse the anisotropic clustering of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS Data Release 11 (DR11) sample, which consists of 690 827 galaxies in the redshift range 0.43 〈 z  〈 0.7 and has a sky coverage of 8498 deg 2 . We perform our analysis in Fourier space using a power spectrum estimator suggested by Yamamoto et al. We measure the multipole power spectra in a self-consistent manner for the first time in the sense that we provide a proper way to treat the survey window function and the integral constraint, without the commonly used assumption of an isotropic power spectrum and without the need to split the survey into subregions. The main cosmological signals exploited in our analysis are the baryon acoustic oscillations and the signal of redshift space distortions, both of which are distorted by the Alcock–Paczynski effect. Together, these signals allow us to constrain the distance ratio D V ( z eff )/ r s ( z d ) = 13.89 ± 0.18, the Alcock–Paczynski parameter F AP ( z eff ) = 0.679 ± 0.031 and the growth rate of structure f ( z eff ) 8 ( z eff ) = 0.419 ± 0.044 at the effective redshift z eff  = 0.57. We emphasize that our constraints are robust against possible systematic uncertainties. In order to ensure this, we perform a detailed systematics study against CMASS mock galaxy catalogues and N -body simulations. We find that such systematics will lead to 3.1 per cent uncertainty for f 8 if we limit our fitting range to k  = 0.01–0.20 h Mpc –1 , where the statistical uncertainty is expected to be three times larger. We did not find significant systematic uncertainties for D V / r s or F AP . Combining our data set with Planck to test General Relativity (GR) through the simple -parametrization, where the growth rate is given by $f(z) = \Omega ^{\gamma }_{\rm m}(z)$ , reveals a ~2 tension between the data and the prediction by GR. The tension between our result and GR can be traced back to a tension in the clustering amplitude 8 between CMASS and Planck.

    Description: The results of a Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) search for l -C 3 H + , first detected by Pety et al. in observations towards the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR), are presented. A total of 39 sources were observed in the 1 mm window. Evidence of emission from l -C 3 H + is found in only a single source – the Orion Bar PDR region – which shows a rotational temperature of 178(13) K and a column density of 7(2) 10 11  cm –2 . In the remaining sources, upper limits of ~10 11 –10 13  cm –2 are found. These results are discussed in the context of guiding future observational searches for this species.

    Notes: Accurate simulation of pellet implosions for direct drive inertial confinement fusion requires benchmarking the codes with experimental data. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has begun to measure the absolute intensity of radiation from laser irradiated targets to provide critical information for the radiatively preheated pellet designs developed by the Nike laser group. Two main diagnostics for this effort are two spectrometers incorporating three detection systems. While both spectrometers use 2500 lines/mm transmission gratings, one instrument is coupled to a soft x-ray streak camera and the other is coupled to both an absolutely calibrated Si photodiode array and a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. Absolute calibration of spectrometer components has been undertaken at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratories. Currently, the system has been used to measure the spatially integrated soft x-ray flux as a function of target material, laser power, and laser spot size. A comparison between measured and calculated flux for Au and CH targets shows reasonable agreement to one-dimensional modeling for two laser power densities. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spectral line shifts have been observed in the Dα transition of neutral deuterium in the Alcator C-mod [I. H. Hutchinson, Proceedings of the IEEE 13th Symposium on Fusion Engineering (IEEE, Piscataway, 1990), Vol. 1, p. 13] tokamak and interpreted as Doppler shifts due to a neutral flow of approximately 5×103 m/s. The emission originates from plasma at the inner wall, as indicated by the Zeeman patterns of the transition. The direction of the flow changes when the plasma transitions from a limited to a diverted configuration. In all cases, the flows are directed toward the point of contact with the wall or divertor plate. Narrow spectral profiles have been observed for the Dα transition near the midplane and within the divertor. Temperatures not higher than 0.86 eV are indicated for the divertor measurements. A difference in plasma conditions for separate locations along a single line of sight has been observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
