    Description: The El Muerto granitic pegmatite, of Grenville (Neoproterozoic) age, part of the Oaxacan Complex in southern Mexico, contains an exceptional development of HFSE-enriched accessory phases. We report here compositional data and textures involving the exotic minerals of this suite, in particular allanite-(Ce), perrierite-(Ce), monazite-(Ce), thorite, fergusonite-(Y), aeschynite-(Y), yttrium-rich betafite, polycrase-(Y), uranopolycrase, niobian rutile and a variant of thorutite. This pegmatite has the earmarks of a NYF suite, but is devoid of F. El Muerto is a member of an anorogenic anorthosite – mangerite – charnockite – granite (AMCG) suite, understood to be emplaced as a result of gravitational collapse of the lower crust following a collision. In common with other suites of anorogenic affiliation, we attribute the unusual enrichment in HFSE to a stage of metasomatic fertilization of a source in the lower to middle crust prior to its melting.

    Description: Understanding the origins and roles of cardiac progenitor cells is important for elucidating the pathogenesis of congenital and acquired heart diseases. Moreover, manipulation of cardiac myocyte progenitors has potential for cell-based repair strategies for various myocardial disorders. Here we report the identification in mouse of a previously unknown cardiac myocyte lineage that derives from the proepicardial organ. These progenitor cells, which express the T-box transcription factor Tbx18, migrate onto the outer cardiac surface to form the epicardium, and then make a substantial contribution to myocytes in the ventricular septum and the atrial and ventricular walls. Tbx18-expressing cardiac progenitors also give rise to cardiac fibroblasts and coronary smooth muscle cells.     Description: Fluorescence lifetimes of single Rhodamine 6G molecules on silica surfaces were measured with pulsed laser excitation, time-correlated single photon counting, and near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). The fluorescence lifetime varies with the position of a molecule relative to a near-field probe. Qualitative features of lifetime decreases are consistent with molecular excited state quenching effects near metal surfaces.     Description: A modified flow cytometer has been used to detect attogram quantities of aqueous rhodamine 6G by laser-induced fluorescence analysis. A detection limit of 28 attograms (35,000 molecules) was obtained, nearly two orders of magnitude better than earlier measurements. The detection limit in concentration units was 1.4 x 10(-13) mole per liter. During the 1-second measurement period, the total volume sampled was 0.42 microliter.     Description: The teratogenicity of alcohol has been demonstrated in humans through clinical studies, behavioral studies, and epidemiologic studies, and in animals through controlled laboratory experiments. In humans exposed to alcohol during gestation the effects can range from fetal alcohol syndrome in some offspring of chronic alcoholic women to reduced average birth weight in offspring of women reporting an average consumption of two to three drinks or more per day. The behavioral effects of such exposure may range from mental retardation in children with fetal alcohol syndrome to milder developmental and behavioral effects in infants born to social drinkers. In animals, exposure to alcohol in utero may result in death, malformation, and growth deficiency as well as behavioral and developmental abnormalities.     Description: Organic ligands have been designed for the stabilization of specific geometries of compounds of nonmetallic elements. These ligands have made possible the isolation, or direct observation, of large numbers of trigonal bipyramidal organo-nonmetallic species. Many of these species are analogs of transition states for nucleophilic displacement reactions and have been stabilized by the ligands to such a degree that they have become ground-state energy minima. Ideas derived from research on these species have been applied to carbon species to generate a molecule that is an analog of the transition state for the associative nucleophilic displacement reaction.     Description: The measure of time was used as an additional parameter on an existing flow cytometer to study the kinetics of enzyme activities and cell-stain interactions. By correlating all fluorescent signals from single cells with time, the dynamics of a reaction can be followed for several minutes.
