    Notes: Summary The screening effects of the formation of large bipolarons have been studied. It is shown that the dependence of the bipolaron binding energy on the electron density does not change qualitatively by using different dielectric functions for describing electron screening. The same result is found if the electron system is described as a bipolaron gas (charged bosons).

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Le energie di legame di eccitoni di cristalli polari in interazione con i fononi longitudinali ottici sono calcolate usando uno stato coerente di fononi la cui funzione di distribuzione è ottenuta da una soluzione esatta dell'equazione della variazione funzionale. Si trova un rilassamento incompleto del reticolo e un aumento delle energie di legame rispetto a quelle ottenute con schermo dielettrico statico in tutti quei casi in cui il raggio del polarone è confrontatbile con il raggio dell'eccitone. Si discute il caso di masse efficaci anisotrope. Si calcolano le probabilità di transizione al primo ordine per eccitoni diretti senza partecipazione di fononi e con partecipazione di fononi.
    Abstract: Резюме Энергии связи экситонов полярных кристаллов во взаимодействии с оптическими продольными фононами вычисляются при помощи одного когерентного состояния фононов, функция распределения которых получается из точного рещения уравнения функциональной вариации. При этом во всех тех случаях, в которых радиус поларона оказывается сравнимым с радиусом экситона, обнаруживается неполная релаксация решетки и повышение энергий вяязи по сравнению с теми, которые получаются при помощи статистического диэлектрического экрана. Обсуждается случай эффективных анизотропических масс. Вычисляются вероятности перехода первого порядка для прямых экситонов без участия и при участии фононов.
    Notes: Summary The binding energies of exciton states in interaction with longitudinal optical phonons in polar materials are computed by using a phonon coherent state, the distribution function of which is obtained from an exact solution of the functional variational equation. We find an incomplete relaxation of the lattice and an increase of the binding energies with respect to those obtained with static dielectric screening when the polaron radius is comparable to the exciton radius. The case of anisotropic effective masses is also discussed. Transition probabilities are computed in first order for direct excitons with zero phonon and with phonon participation.

    Notes: Summary The existence of pair excitations in a Fermi gas interacting via a short-range attractive potential is investigated. Within the ladder approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the effective two-particle interaction, evidence of pair excitation is found at energies slightly larger than the chemical potential. The link between those excitations and a boson-fermion model of superconductivity (Phys. Lett. A,196 (1995) 359) is discussed. In particular it is shown that the charge carrier density dependence of the pair excitation (boson) energy, assumed phenomenologically in the boson-fermion model, is consistent with the properties of the interacting Fermi gas studied. These results give support to the microscopic origin of the phenomenological boson-fermion model of superconductivity.

La sua forma ha origine dall'ipotesi fondamentale che la funzione d'inviluppo eccitonica può essere descritta da un orbitale 1s e che la funzione d'onda dello stato fondamentale è ben approssimata nella sua parte fononica da una funzione della forma di uno stato coerente, con lo spostamento fononico dipendente dalla distanza relativa elettrone-buca.
    Notes: Summary An accurate analytic expression for the electron-hole effective potential in polar semiconductors is derived, by use of a preceding self-consistent calculation of the author. Its form relies on the main assumption that the excitonic envelope function can be of the 1s-orbital form and that the ground-state wave function is well described in its phonon part by a coherent-state shape with a phonon displacement function depending on the relative electron-hole distance.

Si fornisce un procedimento per calcolare la rinormalizzazione della massa totale dell'eccitone estendendo la teoria dell'eccitone polaronico al caso d'impulso diverso da zero; si ottengono risultati numerici per un gran numero di sostanze polari. L'evidenza sperimentale di questo effetto è trovata mediante un'analisi dettagliata di dati sperimentali sulla dispersione spaziale dei polaritoni.
    Abstract: Резюме В полярных кристаллах взаимодействе злектрона и дыры с продольными оптическими фононами производит значительное изменение значения полной массы экситона. Предлогается метод для вычисления перенормализации полной массы экситона при помощи распространеия теории поляритоного экситона на случай ненулевого импулса. Численные результаты получены для болыщого числа вещества. Экспериментальное выявление этого эффекта получено при помощи детального анализа экспериментальных данных п простраственной дисперсии поляритонов.
    Notes: Summary A significant correction to the value of the total exciton mass in polar materials results from the interaction of the electron and the hole with the longitudinal optical phonons. A procedure is given for computing this mass renormalization by means of the excitonic-polaron theory; numerical results are obtained for many substances. Evidence for this effect is found from a detailed analysis of experimental polariton dispersion data.

    Notes: Summary We calculate the binding energy of a two-dimensional exciton for a set of states labelled by the quantum numberm associated to the angular momentum in the direction perpendicular to the surface. The Fröhlich electron-phonon and hole-phonon interactions are taken into account. The statem=0 is more bound with respect to that obtained by the Wannier exciton theory with the screening given by the static dielectric constant and the reduced mass calculated by the electron and hole polaronic masses. The opposite effect is found for the statem=1,2,... Whenm becomes large, the hydrogenic series is recovered with the screening and reduced mass defined above. Our results are compared with the experimental data concerning exciton luminescence GaAs/Al x Ga1−x As, CuCl/CaF2 and CdTe/Cd1−x Zn x Te quantum wells.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Il modello polaronico dell’eccitone è utilizzato per studiare la risposta dielettrica del mezzo all’eccitazione di un livello profondo, usando il metodo della risoluzione diretta dell’equazione euleriana della variazione funzionale. La risposta dinamica della polarizzazione elettronica influisce sull’attrazione elettrone-buca e sull’energia di legame dell’eccitone, in un modo che dipende dai parametri di base del cristallo (costante dielettrica, massa effettiva, parametro reticolare) attraverso il raggio dell’eccitone di nocciolo e il raggio del polarone. Quando il primo è molto maggiore del secondo, si ottiene un’attrazione schermata dalla costante dielettrica statica. Quando i due raggi sono confrontabili, lo schermo è ridotto e l’energia di legame aumenta. Le energie di legame sono calcolate in vari semiconduttori usando l’approssimazione della massa effettiva. La dispersione spaziale della funzione dielettrica, accompagnata all’interazione tra piú minimi della banda di conduzione, può tuttavia contribuire a ridurre il raggio dell’eccitone e produrre un’instabilità ad uno stato profondo tale da invalidare l’approssimazione della massa effettiva.
    Abstract: Резюме Поляронная модель экситонов используется для исследования диэлектрического отклика среды на возбуждение уровней «остова», применяя метод прямого решения уравнений Эйлера для вариационных производных. Динамический отклик электронной поляризации влияет на электрон-дырочное притяжение и энергию связи экситона таким образом, который зависит от основных параметров кристалла (диэлектрической постоянной, эффективных масс, параметра решетки) через экситонный радиус остова и поляронный радиус. Когда экситонный радиус много больше поляронного, то получается статическое диэлектрическое экранирование. Когда экситонный радиус сравним с поляронным радиусом, то экранирование уменьшается и энергия связи увеличивается. Используя приближение эффективной массы, вычисляются энергии связи для различных полупроводников. Пространственная дисперсия диэлектрической функции, связанная с взаимодействием между минимумами зоны проводимости, может давать вклад и уменьшать экситонный радиус, а также приводить к неустойчивости глубокого состояния, что обусловливает нарушение применимости приближения эффективной массы.
    Notes: Summary The electronic polaron model of the exciton is used to study the dielectric response of a medium to the excitation of a «core» level, by adopting the method of direct solution of the Eulerian functional variational equations. The dynamical response of the electronic polarization affects the electron-hole attraction and the exciton binding energy, in a way which depends on the basic parameters of the crystal (dielectric constant, effective masses, lattice parameter) through the core exciton radius and the polaron radius. When the former is much larger than the latter, static dielectric screening results. When the exciton radius is comparable to the polaron radius, the screening is reduced and the binding energy is increased. Core exciton binding energies are computed in a number of substances using the effective-mass approximation. Space dispersion of the dielectric function coupled to intervalley interaction may, however, contribute in some cases to reducing the excitonic radius and bringing about an instability to a deep state that would invalidate the effective-mass approximation.
