    Description: Displacement response spectra defined up to long periods are needed for the design of large structures and to design structures according to displacement-based methods. The spectra can theoretically be retrieved in the near field of large earthquakes from accelerations recorded by modern strong-motion accelerometers. Difficulties exist due to instrumental limitations: long-period noise that contaminates the acceleration time histories and record of the tilt simultaneously to the translational accelerations. Original in this work, the effect of the instrument’s permanent tilt is investigated, and the improvement of the spectra at long periods, when the residual tilt is removed from accelerations recorded by modern strong-motion seismometers, is checked against 1 Hz Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. Records of five strong-motion accelerometers situated in the near field of the M w  6.8 Japanese 2007 Niigata-ken Chuetsu-Oki earthquake are analyzed in terms of Fourier content and displacement response spectra and are then compared to their closest 1 Hz GPS data. The results show that the uncorrected acceleration time histories, obtained by simply removing the preevent mean from the raw accelerations recorded by modern strong-motion seismometers, provide reliable displacement response spectra at periods over 20 s. Corrected acceleration time histories, obtained by removing the permanent tilt from the uncorrected records using the Javelaud et al. (2011) method, may provide reliable response spectra at very long periods until they reach the theoretical peak ground displacement.

    Description: Oral malodor is caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) such as hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide produced in mouth. VSC induces permeability of mucous membrane and oral malodor formation. Thus, the adsorbent which highly adsorbs VSC should be useful for health in mouth and may prevent teeth from decaying. The microporous material, hydrotalcite, was synthesized by a wet method, and the H 2 S adsorption was studied. The samples, identified by powder X-ray diffraction method, were put into glass flask filled with H 2 S gas. The initial concentration of H 2 S was 30 ppm. The change in concentrations of H 2 S was measured at rt, and the amount of H 2 S absorbed on the hydrotalcite for 24 h was 300 micro L/g.     Description: Regulated transcription controls the diversity, developmental pathways and spatial organization of the hundreds of cell types that make up a mammal. Using single-molecule cDNA sequencing, we mapped transcription start sites (TSSs) and their usage in human and mouse primary cells, cell lines and tissues to produce a comprehensive overview of mammalian gene expression across the human body. We find that few genes are truly 'housekeeping', whereas many mammalian promoters are composite entities composed of several closely separated TSSs, with independent cell-type-specific expression profiles. TSSs specific to different cell types evolve at different rates, whereas promoters of broadly expressed genes are the most conserved. Promoter-based expression analysis reveals key transcription factors defining cell states and links them to binding-site motifs. The functions of identified novel transcripts can be predicted by coexpression and sample ontology enrichment analyses. The functional annotation of the mammalian genome 5 (FANTOM5) project provides comprehensive expression profiles and functional annotation of mammalian cell-type-specific transcriptomes with wide     Description: T cells that mediate autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are difficult to characterize because they are likely to be deleted or inactivated in the thymus if the self antigens they recognize are ubiquitously expressed. One way to obtain and analyze these autoimmune T cells is to alter T cell receptor (TCR) signaling in developing T cells to change their sensitivity to thymic negative selection, thereby allowing their thymic production. From mice thus engineered to generate T cells mediating autoimmune arthritis, we isolated arthritogenic TCRs and characterized the self antigens they recognized. One of them was the ubiquitously expressed 60S ribosomal protein L23a (RPL23A), with which T cells and autoantibodies from RA patients reacted.
