Description: The three-dimensional pattern of elastic moduli (bulk modulus, Young modulus, shear modulus) of the upper crust (0-10 km depth) has been determined in the Friuli area (north-eastern Italy) from the 3D Vp, Vp/Vs and density structures. Firstly, 3D Pwave velocity and P to S velocity ratio were modeled by joint inversion for hypocentres and velocity structure. Then, we apply the tomographic inversion method of Sequential Integrated Inversion (SII) to recover the three dimensional density structure. The pattern of the elastic moduli is characterized by marked lateral and depth variations that reflect the geologic-structural heterogeneity of the area, produced by the superposition of several tectonic phases with different orientations of the principal axes of stress. The bulk (K), Young (E) and shear (G) moduli image a high rigidity body with an irregular shape, at 4-8 km depth. The body is characterized by G ≥ 3.2·1010 N·m-2, K ≥ 6.8·1010 N·m-2 and E ≥ 8.4·1010 N·m-2 and is associated to platform limestones and dolomitic rocks. The seismicity is mainly located along the sharp variations of the moduli pattern, in or adjacent to high rigidity zones. The most severe earthquakes (ML between 4.5 and 6.4), occurred in the study area from 1976 to the present day, are located in a transition zone from high to low rigidity patterns. Our interpretation is that the elastic moduli variations, closely related to variability in rock mechanical properties, influence the occurrence of earthquakes by processes of stress concentrations. The values of the elastic moduli recently obtained from laboratory measurements on the main lithologic units fall in the middlehigh range of the values obtained with the present investigation. Notes: Abstract: An exact expression for the determinant of the splitting matrix is derived for three degrees of freedom systems with three time scales: it allows us to analyze the asymptotic behaviour needed to amend the large angles theorem proposed in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, B-60, 1 (1994). The asymptotic validity of Mel'nikov's integrals is proved for the class of models considered, which are polynomial perturbations. The technique for exhibiting cancellations is inspired by renormalization theory in quantum electrodynamics and uses an analogue of Dyson's equations to prove an infinite family of identities, due to symmetries, that remind us of Ward's identities.

Notes: Abstract The Luttinger model describes a non-local interacting relativistic theory for spinless and massless fermions. Albeit the exact solution is already known, the perturbative approach to the model via the renormalization group is useful on account of the connection to the study of more realistic models' behaviour near the Fermi surface. In this work we show that the effective potential describing the interaction on the physical scalep 0 −1 is analytical in the coupling constants, and has an exponential decay on that scale. Besides the physical motivation of this approach, the problem is also technically interesting, since it is an example of a trivially superrenormalizable theory, as far as the ultraviolet region is concerned; nevertheless the proof is quite delicate, as the convergence of the perturbative series does not follow from the superficial bounds (which would give logarithmic and linear divergences), but is due to accidental compensations furnished by the particular symmetry properties of the model.

Notes: Abstract: Under suitable conditions a flow on a torus C (p) -close, with p large enough, to a quasi periodic diophantine rotation is shown to be “linearizable”, i.e. conjugable to the quasi periodic rotation, by a map that is analytic in the perturbation size. This result is parallel to Moser's theorem stating conjugability in class C (p') for some p'〈p. The extra conditions restrict the class of perturbations that are allowed.

Notes: Abstract: A one-dimensional system of electrons on a lattice, interacting with a periodic potential, with period incommensurate with the lattice spacing and satisfying a Diophantine condition, is considered in the case of strong interaction. The Schwinger functions are computed and their asymptotic behaviour is studied, proving Anderson localization. The decay of the Schwinger functions is shown to depend critically on the value of the chemical potential.

Notes: Abstract We consider the static Holstein model, describing a chain of fermions interacting with a classical phonon field, when the interaction is weak and the density is a rational number p = P/Q, with P, Q relative prime integers. We show that the energy of the system, as a function of the phonon field, has one (if Q is even) or two (if Q is odd) stationary points, defined up to a lattice translation, which are local minima in the space of fields periodic with period equal to the inverse of the density.
