    Notes: Abstract The influence on several hot wire measurements of the diameter d and overheat ratio a of a wire placed near a conducting wall in a turbulent boundary layer is investigated. These measurements include the mean velocity and second, third and fourth order moments of the longitudinal velocity fluctuation u. A decrease in either d or a reduces the departure of the measured mean velocity from the expected linear sublayer value. The measured influence of d and a precludes the use of a universal correction for the mean velocity. There is no influence of a on the rms, skewness and flatness factors of u. Only a small increase is found in the skewness and flatness factors of u when d is decreased.

    Notes: The spectrum of the lateral derivative of temperature has been measured on the center line of a turbulent plane jet and compared with calculations, based on local isotropy, derived from the spectra of either the streamwise derivative or the temporal derivative of temperature. To within the experimental uncertainty, quantitative agreement between measurement and calculation is satisfactory for sufficiently large wavenumbers.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the longitudinal velocity fluctuation and the temperature fluctuation on the centreline of a turbulent plane jet are used to obtain second and third order longitudinal velocity, temperature and velocity-temperature structure functions. Kolmogorov's equation for velocity structure functions is satisfied only for separations that lie well within the viscous range. The analogous equation, obtained by Yaglom, for the temperature field is satisfied for separations which extend up to the beginning of the inertial range. The difference between the measurements and the equations is discussed in the context of local isotropy and its implications on the inertial range constants are considered.

    Notes: Abstract Mean and rms velocity and temperature measurements are made in the near field of a plane jet for two different sets of conditions at the beginning of the interaction region. In the first, the jet has a nearly top-hat velocity profile and laminar boundary layers at the nozzle exit. Schlieren photography and spectral coherence measurements show that the mixing layer structures are strongly organised and symmetric about the centreline. In the second, the jet issues from a two-dimensional duct with a nearly fully developed velocity profile so that, upstream of the interaction region, turbulent structures should be three-dimensional and asymmetric about the jet centreline. The resulting weak interaction obtained in this case contrasts with the strong interaction measured in the first case.

    Notes: Abstract Simultaneous temperature fluctuations have been measured along directions both parallel and orthogonal to the wind direction in the atmospheric surface layer. Ensemble-averaged temperature distributions associated with the ramp-like feature observed in instantaneous temperature traces indicate that the average duration of the ramp is approximately independent of height. Application of Davenport's geometric similarity of coherence of temperature fluctuations yields approximate estimates for the spatial extent of the structure characterized by the ramp. The longitudinal extent is approximately 12 times the vertical extent and 17 times the lateral extent.

    Notes: Abstract Fourth-order mixed moments of velocity and temperature fluctuations, measured within the atmospheric surface layer, are compared with results obtained by assuming the quasi-Gaussian approximation. Standard deviations of the products uw, uθ and wθ(u and w are the longitudinal and vertical velocity fluctuations; θ is the temperature fluctuation) are in good agreement with those obtained using the quasi-Gaussian assumption. Good agreement is also obtained between measured and Gaussian estimates of fourth-order moments including all three fluctuations u, w, θ Schwarz inequalities, commonly used in the clipping approximation in turbulence modelling, are found to provide bounds for third-order moments of w, θ that are too conservative. More reasonable, tighter, bounds for these moments are given by inequalities obtained by Lumley.

    Notes: Abstract Atmospheric surface-layer measurements of terms in the equation for the streamwise heat flux confirm previous results in both laboratory and atmosphere that the temperature-pressure gradient correlation acts as a sink, approximately equal in magnitude to the production term. The measured viscous dissipation term is independent of stability and represents less than 10% of the production term over the range of experimental stability conditions. Models for the temperature-pressure gradient correlation are compared with the measurements.

    Notes: Abstract A pair of parallel cold wires separated in either the vertical or lateral direction was used to obtain the three components θx, θy, θz of the temperature derivative in the streamwise, lateral and vertical directions, respectively. The average absolute skewness values of θx and θz are nonzero and approximately equal, while the skewness of θy is approximately zero. These results appear to be consistent with the presence of a large, three-dimensional organised structure in the surface layer. There is an apparent low-frequency contamination in the spectral density of θy and θz due mainly to small errors in estimating the sensitivity of the cold wires. The temperature derivatives were high-pass filtered, the filter being set to remove possible contributions from the large structure and to minimise low-frequency sensitivity contamination. The filtered rms ratios \~θx/\~θy and \~θx/\~θz were in the range 0.7 to 0.9, a result in qualitative agreement with that obtained in the laboratory boundary layer by Sreenivasan et al. (1977). The skewness of filtered θx or θz is negligible, consistent with local isotropy of small-scale temperature fluctuations and in support of the high wavenumber spectral isotropy discussed in Antonia and Chambers (1978).
