Notes: The 100 ns, 20 MA pinch-driver Z is surrounded by an extensive set of diagnostics. There are nine radial lines of sight set at 12° above horizontal and each of these may be equipped with up to five diagnostic ports. Instruments routinely fielded viewing the pinch from the side with these ports include x-ray diode arrays, photoconducting detector arrays, bolometers, transmission grating spectrometers, time-resolved x-ray pinhole cameras, x-ray crystal spectrometers, calorimeters, silicon photodiodes, and neutron detectors. A diagnostic package fielded on axis for viewing internal pinch radiation consists of nine lines of sight. This package accommodates virtually the same diagnostics as the radial ports. Other diagnostics not fielded on the axial or radial ports include current B-dot monitors, filtered x-ray scintillators coupled by fiber optics to streak cameras, streaked visible spectroscopy, velocity interferometric system for any reflector, bremsstrahlung cameras, and active shock breakout measurement of hohlraum temperature. The data acquisition system is capable of recording up to 500 channels and the data from each shot is available on the Internet. A major new diagnostic presently under construction is the BEAMLET backlighter. We will briefly describe each of these diagnostics and present some of the highest-quality data from them. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the concept of the dynamic hohlraum an imploding Z pinch is optically thick to its own radiation. Radiation may be trapped inside the pinch to give a radiation temperature inside the pinch greater than that outside the pinch. The radiation is typically produced by colliding an outer Z-pinch liner onto an inner liner. The collision generates a strongly radiating shock, and the radiation is trapped by the outer liner. As the implosion continues after the collision, the radiation temperature may continue to increase due to ongoing PdV (pressure times change in volume) work done by the implosion. In principal, the radiation temperature may increase to the point at which the outer liner burns through, becomes optically thin, and no longer traps the radiation. One application of the dynamic hohlraum is to drive an ICF (inertial confinement fusion) pellet with the trapped radiation field. Members of the dynamic hohlraum team at Sandia National Labs have used the pulsed power driver Z (20 MA, 100 ns) to create a dynamic hohlraum with temperature linearly ramping from 100 to 180 eV over 5 ns. On this shot zp214 a nested tungsten wire array of 4 and 2 cm diam with masses of 2 and 1 mg imploded onto a 2.5 mg plastic annulus at 5 mm diam. The current return can on this shot was slotted. It is likely the radiation temperature may be increased to over 200 eV by stabilizing the pinch with a solid current return can. A current return can with nine slots imprints nine filaments onto the imploding pinch. This degrades the optical trapping and the quality of the liner collision. A 1.6 mm diam capsule situated inside this dynamic hohlraum of zp214 would see 15 kJ of radiation impinging on its surface before the pinch itself collapses to a 1.6 mm diam. Dynamic hohlraum shots including pellets were scheduled to take place on Z in September of 1998. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. To study two factors which are predicted as causing changes to community structure in cut-off meanders (colloquially known in Australia as billabongs, a term of aboriginal origin), 16 experimental billabongs were constructed. These were designed to test two hypotheses: (a) that the structure of macrophyte and invertebrate communities within billabongs is altered by changing the pattern of flooding; and (b) that the presence of small planktivorous fish alters invertebrate community structure and diversity within billabongs.2. An increase in the duration of flooding seems to favour animals better adapted to a greater availability of macrophyte habitat. Changing the seasonality of flooding resulted in prolonging of the time water was available over the summer months.3. The presence of a planktivorous fish appears to affect macroinvertebrate communities through competition with other planktivores. Variable top-down pressure may create differing successional patterns and ultimately different communities at lower trophic levels.

Notes: Abstract Latitudinal clines of malate dehydrogenase-1 (MDH-1) allozymes occur within honey bee populations on three continents: Europe, North America and South America. The North and South American populations are introduced and demonstrate that Mdh allelic clines were established within the last 150 years. The frequency of the ‘medium’ electrophoretic allele increases in frequency with increasing latitude while the ‘fast’ allele decreases with latitude on all the three continents. The clines are best explained by the average daily high temperature for July on all continents. These parallel clines provide evidence for selection on Mdh alleles in honey bees.

Notes: Abstract The nematocide DBCP has been an effective chemical for the control of nematodes but, because of contamination of groundwaters and for health reasons, its use has been curtailed. To evaluate the tendency of DBCP to leach, adsorption and transport characteristics were examined on laboratory samples of a field soil through which the chemical was also leached. Adsorption of DBCP on Panoche clay loam was small, and displacement experiments in soil columns demonstrated that loading rate and flux of water were significant for the dissipation of the chemical by microbial degradation and/or volatilization. Dissipation rate constants were estimated by optimizing the fit to experimental BTCs of the convective-dispersion equation with linear adsorption and a first-order degradation rate. Although field measurements did not establish conclusively that leaching to groundwater would occur in a fine-textured soil, evidence was obtained that leaching below the root zone could occur in many soils.

Notes: Summary This study addresses the technology for soil sampling of large agricultural fields which are inherently variable in both space and time. Three several hundred ha fields in southwest Iran initially sampled on an arbitrarily selected grid of 80 m to ascertain soil salinity levels were analyzed using both geostatistical and classical statistical methods. The results from two fields showed that the variance structure of the salinity observations were spatially dependent, and hence, geostatistical techniques allowed best linear unbiased estimates of salinity values interpolated between spatially observed sampling locations to yield contour lines of isosalinity. In the third field, salinity observations were found to be spatially independent, and hence, were analyzed by classical methods to yield the number of soil samples necessary to observe the fiducial limits within which it is expected that the true mean salinity exists for given levels of probability.

Notes: Summary A simple model is given, based on mass conservation of a non-transformed non-absorbed solute or ion (such as the chloride ion), which allows long term trends in the concentration of this solute to be predicted. The method involves solution of an implicit equation for the long term through-drainage flux below the maximum depth of sampling. A knowledge of the initial chloride ion concentration in the soil depth of interest, and its value after a known application via irrigation water provides sufficient information for the model to be applied. The model is applied to data from an irrigated slowly permeable swelling clay soil. A drainage flux of 8 cm yr−1 beneath paddy rice was inferred, and some twenty-five years after commencement of irrigation an equilibrium soil salinity of 22 meq/l at saturation was predicted.

Notes: Abstract In many long-term, intensive experimental and field studies there often arises a need to trade off taxonomic resolution for ecological answers. Compounding this problem is a taxonomic impediment, the lack of experienced taxonomists capable of processing large numbers of samples to species resolution, especially in groups such as the Rotifera. This paper has two aims: (1) To investigate the level of taxonomic resolution required to determine the impact of a disturbance, in the form of a flood event; (2) to compare the impact of different taxonomic resolutions in assessing biodiversity. Results suggest both family and generic resolution can be used to determine the impact of a flood event and that these levels have some applicability to biodiversity studies. Relatively inexperienced taxonomists who can identify the common rotifers to generic level, can be relied upon to detect disturbance to community structure but their data become unreliable when assessing biodiversity.
