    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Planetary cores are composed mainly of Fe with minor elements such as Ni, Si, O, and S. The physical properties of Fe alloys depend on their composition. Changes in 〈span〉c/a〈/span〉 ratio, center shifts, and elastic properties of Fe and Fe–Ni alloys were reported previously. However, such properties of Fe light-element alloys have not yet been extensively studied. Si is a plausible candidate as a light element in planetary cores. Therefore, we studied the electronic properties and compressional behavior of Fe-Si alloys with a hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) structure under high pressure using synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Center shifts (CS) were observed at pressures of 21.4–45.3 GPa for Fe-2.8wt%Si and of 30.9–62.2 GPa for Fe-6.1wt%Si. Some of SMS and XRD measurements were performed under the same conditions using a newly developed system at the BL10XU beamline of SPring-8, which allowed simultaneous characterization of the electron information and crystal structure. Changes in the CS values were observed at 36.9 GPa in Fe-2.8wt%Si and 54.3 GPa in Fe-6.1wt%Si. The ratios of 〈span〉c/a〈/span〉 in the hcp structure were measured at pressures of 21.2–49.6 GPa in Fe-2.8wt%Si and 32.9–61.4 GPa in Fe-6.1wt%Si. The 〈span〉c/a〈/span〉 ratio changed at pressures of 30–45 GPa in Fe-2.8wt%Si and at 50 GPa in Fe-6.1wt%Si. Changes in the CS and 〈span〉c/a〈/span〉 ratio were explained according to the electronic isostructural transition in Fe–Si alloys. In addition, the transition pressure increased with increasing Si content in metallic iron. This finding is significant as changes in seismic wave velocities due to the change in 〈span〉c/a〈/span〉 ratio of Fe–Si alloys with an hcp structure might be observed if Venus has a solid inner core.〈/span〉

    Description: The adhesion and friction of smooth polymer surfaces were studied below the glass transition temperature by use of a surface forces apparatus. The friction force of a crosslinked polymer was orders of magnitude less than that of an uncrosslinked polymer. In contrast, after chain scission of the outermost layers, the adhesion hysteresis and friction forces increase substantially. These results show that polymer-polymer adhesion hysteresis and friction depend on the dynamic rearrangement of the outermost polymer segments at shearing interfaces, and that both increase as a transition is made from crosslinked surfaces to surfaces with long chains to surfaces with quasi-free ends.     Description: Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a ligand for receptors that clear remnants of chylomicrons and very low density lipoproteins. Lack of apoE is, therefore, expected to cause accumulation in plasma of cholesterol-rich remnants whose prolonged circulation should be atherogenic. ApoE-deficient mice generated by gene targeting were used to test this hypothesis and to make a mouse model for spontaneous atherosclerosis. The mutant mice had five times normal plasma cholesterol, and developed foam cell-rich depositions in their proximal aortas by age 3 months. These spontaneous lesions progressed and caused severe occlusion of the coronary artery ostium by 8 months.     Description: This study describes comprehensive polling of transcription start and termination sites and analysis of previously unidentified full-length complementary DNAs derived from the mouse genome. We identify the 5' and 3' boundaries of 181,047 transcripts with extensive variation in transcripts arising from alternative promoter usage, splicing, and polyadenylation. There are 16,247 new mouse protein-coding transcripts, including 5154 encoding previously unidentified proteins. Genomic mapping of the transcriptome reveals transcriptional forests, with overlapping transcription on both strands, separated by deserts in which few transcripts are observed.     Notes: AlGaN/GaN heterostructure devices have recently been attracting much attention because of their potential for high-performance microwave applications. Therefore, the electronic properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures have recently been discussed. We studied the magnetoresistance oscillation of the 2DEG at 0.4 K for various backgate voltages, and observed multiple oscillations resulting from spin splitting. The magnetoresistance shows clear beating due to the superposition of three oscillations. The frequency interval between the first and second largest frequencies is proportional to the total electron concentration and the measured spin-orbit interaction parameter agrees with the theoretical one. Therefore, the first and second largest frequencies are found to correspond to spin splitting by the spin-orbit interaction. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
