Notes: Results of the measurements of the energy distributions of secondary electrons and H− ions produced in low relative energy (1 to 10 eV) collisions of O− with H2 are presented. The electron distribution for the associative detachment reaction is found to be narrow and peaks at almost zero energies, indicating the formation of a highly vibrorotationally excited molecule. The H− energy distributions are structured and indicate the formation of vibrationally excited OH. For low collision energies this excitation is small. The H− energy distributions are found to resemble closely the ones obtained in dissociative attachment in electron–H2O scattering.

Notes: This paper describes the design and tests of an ultrahigh vacuum apparatus built for the study of particle surface interactions, with emphasis on ion scattering experiments. The system was designed to provide facilities for angle resolved electron spectroscopy, ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). It has provisions for photon spectroscopy and fixed angle time-of-flight (TOF) scattering and recoiling spectrometry. Mass selected ion beams in the energy range from a few eV to a few keV can be produced in a continuous or pulsed mode. Two independent, parallel plate tandem electrostatic analyzers, which can rotate around the sample are employed. The angular range spanned is analysis-type dependent and varies from 0° to 135°. One of the analyzers was designed for low energy secondary electron spectroscopy (0–100 eV) and the other one for ISS and AES measurements in the energy range from a few eV to 5 keV. The system disposes of a Czerny–Turner monochromator for optical spectroscopy in the visible. TOF analysis can be performed for 7° and 38° scattering angles and a flight length of 2.2 m. Alternatively, a large area detector set at 20 cm from the collision center allows TOF and charge fraction measurements over an angular range from 0° to 110°. We describe various tests of the different components of the apparatus and some results of experiments on ion scattering. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A 45° parallel-plate electrostatic energy analyzer and associated optics, which were designed for low-energy electron spectroscopy, are described. Results of some computer simulations and some typical electron energy spectra obtained with this system are presented.

Notes: We report a study of the effects of chlorine adsorption on the interaction of positive ions (H+, Ne+, Ar+ with a Ag(111) surface from the submonolayer Cl chemisorption to initial stages of AgCl formation. Cl adsorption on Ag(111) proceeds through different phases and we observed that the neutralization probabilities oscillate in this range, attaining an intermediate minimum at about 2/3 coverage and reach a maximum at full coverage. The subsequent appearance of AgCl phase again leads to a reduction in neutralization. These results are described in terms of changes in Auger neutralization rates due to modifications in the adsorbate density of states. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Conclusions Protection of the stream of metal in the steel-teeming-ladle-intermediate-ladle area of the continuous billet casting machine with the use of isostatically formed refractory graphite-containing tubes has been introduced in the Converter Shop of the Azov Steel Combine. The tube is butt joined to the collector nozzle, and the lower portion of it is submerged below the level of the metal in the intermediate ladle. The processes of wear of the tubes and the factors influencing it were studied. The use of the tubes makes it possible to increase the quality of the metal, to stabilize the teeming process, and to improve the working conditions for the operating personnel of the continuous billet casting machine.

Notes: Abstract This article examines the problem of determining the stress state of a railroad-wheel web as a thin-walled shell of revolution of variable stiffness subjected to axisymmetric and antisymmetric contour loads. A stable numerical method is used to solve the problem. The stress distribution in a disk loaded by vertical and lateral forces is presented.

Notes: Abstract The errors generated in finite-element (FE) digitization are determined by comparison of results obtained by finite-element computation with familiar exact solutions for disks. Optimal digitization of the disk of a railway wheel is determined for calculation on an ES-1045 computer using axisymmetric triangular simplex-elements.

Notes: Abstract A method for the design of railway wheels, which is based on use of the semianalytical finite-element method and which makes it possible to account for both the forces of contact interaction between the wheel and rail and negative production clearance during the press fitting of wheels, is developed.
