    Description: The burst acrsecond imaging and spectroscopy (BASIS) mission concept is reviewed. The scientific objectives of the mission are to accurately locate bursts, determine their distance scale and measure the physical characteristics of the emission region. Arcsecond burst positions would be obtained for approximately 100 bursts/yr in the 10 to 200 keV emission region, allowing deep, unconfused counterpart surveys at other wavelengths. The key enabling technology development is the production of CdZnTe room temperature semiconductor detectors with a spatial resolution of the order of 100 microns. Fine spectroscopy would be obtained between 0.2 and 200 keV. The 0.2 keV threshold would allow measurements of the absorption in our Galaxy and possible host galaxies.

    Description: The abundances of energetic ions accelerated from high-speed solar wind streams by shock waves formed at corotating interaction regions (CIRs) where high-speed streams overtake the lower-speed solar wind are examined. The observed element abundances appear to represent those of the high-speed solar wind, unmodified by the shock acceleration. These abundances, relative to those in the solar photosphere, are organized by the first ionization potential (FIP) of the ions in a way that is different from the FIP effect commonly used to describe differences between abundances in the solar photosphere and those in the solar corona, solar energetic particles (SEPs), and the low-speed solar wind. In contrast, the FIP effect of the ion abundances in the CIR events is characterized by a smaller amplitude of the differences between high-FIP and low-FIP ions and by elevated abundances of He, C, and S.

    Description: The properties of MeV/amu ions in 64 corotating streams at and inside 1 AU associated with corotating high-speed streams from 1978 to 1986 during presolar maximum to near solar minimum conditions are discussed. Around 50 percent of the streams include significant ion intensity enhancements not associated with solar particle events or traveling interplanetary shocks. The ions stream nearly along the E x B drift direction in the spacecraft frame, corresponding to a weak sunward field-aligned streaming in the solar wind frame. The sunward streaming is consistent with particle acceleration in the outer heliosphere followed by diffusion into the inner heliosphere. The ion intensity is not correlated with the stream solar wind speed or with the increase in solar wind speed at the leading edge of the high-speed stream, suggesting that the local shock strength alone may not play a dominant role in determining the intensity.

    Description: The goal of the Orbiting Wide-field Light-collectors (0WL) mission is to study the origin and physics of the highest energy particles known in nature, the ultra- high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The OWL mission consists of telescopes with UV sensitive cameras on two satellites operating in tandem to view in stereo the development of the giant particle showers induced in the Earth s atmosphere by UHECRs. This paper discusses the characteristics of the 0WL mission.

    Description: The ENTICE experiment is one of two instruments that make up the HNX mission. The experimental goal of ENTICE is to measure with high precision the elemental abundances of all nuclei with Z between 10 and 82. This will enable us to determine if the injection mechanism for the cosmic ray accelerator is controlled by FIP or Volatility and to study the mix of nucleosynthetic processes that contribute to the galactic cosmic ray source. The ENTICE experiment utilizes the dE/dx-C method of charge determination and consists of silicon dE/dx detectors, Cherenkov detectors with two different refractive indices, and a fiber hodoscope. We will describe the instrument and its performance based on beam tests of a prototype instrument.

    Description: The ECCO (Extremely-heavy Cosmic-ray Composition Observer) instrument is one of two instruments which comprise the HNX (Heavy Nuclei Explorer) mission. The principal goal of ECCO is to measure the age of galactic cosmic ray nuclei using the actinides (Th, U, Pu, Cm) as clocks. As a bonus, ECCO will search with unprecedented sensitivity for long-lived elements in the superheavy island of stability. ECCO is an enormous array (23 sq. m) of BP-1 glass track-etch detectors, and is based on the successful flight heritage of the Trek detector which was deployed externally on Mir. We present a description of the instrument, estimates of expected performance, and recent calibrations which demonstrate that the actinides can be resolved from each other with good charge resolution.

    Description: The primary scientific objectives of HNX, which was recently selected by NASA for a Small Explorer (SMEX) Mission Concept Study, are to measure the age of the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) since nucleosynthesis, determine the injection mechanism for the GCR accelerator (Volatility or FIP), and study the mix of nucleosynthetic processes that contribute to the source of GCRs. The experimental goal of HNX is to measure the elemental abundances of all individual stable nuclei from neon through the actinides and possibly beyond. HNX is composed of two instruments: ECCO, which measures elemental abundances of nuclei with Z greater than or equal to 72, and ENTICE. which measures elemental abundances of nuclei with Z between 10 and 82. We describe the mission and the science that can be addressed by HNX.

    Description: The ENTICE experiment is one of two instruments which make up the HNX mission. This will enable us to distinguish between possible injection mechanisms for the galactic cosmic ray accelerator such-as those dependent upon volatility or first ionization potential, and to study the mix of nucleosynthetic processes that contribute to the galactic cosmic ray source. The ENTICE experiment utilizes the dE/dx-C method of charge determination and consists of silicon dE/dx detectors, Cherenkov detectors with two different refractive indices, and a scintillating fiber hodoscope. The geometrical factor of the instrument is 8m2.sr. We will present a description of the instrument and its expected performance based on beam tests and a balloon flight of a prototype instrument.

The Beyond Einstein program consists of a series of exploratory missions to investigate the most important and pressing problems in modern-day astrophysics - including searches for Dark Energy and studies of the earliest times in the universe, during the inflationary period after the Big Bang. A variety of new technologies are being developed both in the science instrumentation these missions will use and in the spacecraft that will carry those instruments.

    Description: We have been developing a gas time projection chamber for the imaging of gamma-rays between 0.3 - 50 MeV, the Three-Dimensional Track Imager (3DTI). The detector is being designed for use on satellite experiments for the imaging of astrophysical gamma-ray sources. Electrons produced by pair production or Compton scattering ionize the gas and these ionization electrons are detected by the cross-strip micro-well detector at the bottom of the chamber. Discrete component of front end electronics and time digitization electronics have been developed. We will present results of prototype microwell detector and laboratory set-up in various gas mixtures.
