    Description: 〈p〉Understanding the remarkable excitonic effects and controlling the exciton binding energies in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are crucial in unlocking their full potential for use in future photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we demonstrate large excitonic effects and gate-tunable exciton binding energies in single-layer rhenium diselenide (ReSe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉) on a back-gated graphene device. We used scanning tunneling spectroscopy and differential reflectance spectroscopy to measure the quasiparticle electronic and optical bandgap of single-layer ReSe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, respectively, yielding a large exciton binding energy of 520 meV. Further, we achieved continuous tuning of the electronic bandgap and exciton binding energy of monolayer ReSe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 by hundreds of milli–electron volts through electrostatic gating, attributed to tunable Coulomb interactions arising from the gate-controlled free carriers in graphene. Our findings open a new avenue for controlling the bandgap renormalization and exciton binding energies in 2D semiconductors for a wide range of technological applications.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉The spatial organization of chromatin is pivotal for regulating genome functions. We report an imaging method for tracing chromatin organization with kilobase- and nanometer-scale resolution, unveiling chromatin conformation across topologically associating domains (TADs) in thousands of individual cells. Our imaging data revealed TAD-like structures with globular conformation and sharp domain boundaries in single cells. The boundaries varied from cell to cell, occurring with nonzero probabilities at all genomic positions but preferentially at CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF)- and cohesin-binding sites. Notably, cohesin depletion, which abolished TADs at the population-average level, did not diminish TAD-like structures in single cells but eliminated preferential domain boundary positions. Moreover, we observed widespread, cooperative, multiway chromatin interactions, which remained after cohesin depletion. These results provide critical insight into the mechanisms underlying chromatin domain and hub formation.〈/p〉

    Description: The plasticity of Mg is restricted at low temperatures because: (a) only a small number of deformation mechanisms can be activated, and (b) a preferred crystallographic orientation (texture) develops in wrought alloys, especially in flat-rolled sheets. This causes problems in thin sheet processing as well as component manufacturing from the sheet. In this study, different rolling speeds from 15 to 1000 m/min were employed to warm-roll AZ31B magnesium alloy to different reductions. The results show that AZ31B sheets rolled at 15 m/min and 100 ?C has fractured for reductions of more than 30% per pass. However, by increasing the rolling speed to 1000 m/min the rollability was improved significantly and the material can be rolled to reductions of more than 70% per pass. The results show that with increasing strain rate at 100?C, the splitting of basal poles was observed, indicating the activation of more contraction twins and secondary twins.

    Description: Surface coarse structure is one of key factors affecting the superhydrophobicity, yet it’s not very clear that what kind of structure is the best for hydrophobicity. Herein in order to study the effect of surface coarse structure, eight kinds of spherical SiO 2 (20 nm, 60 nm, 200 nm, 500 nm, 1 μm, 2 μm, 5 μm and 10 μm) were taken as raw material respectively to explore the effect of particle size on the hydrophobic performance. SiO 2 was deposited on the glass substrate layer by layer using the electrostatic assembly method based on the reaction of amino and epoxy groups. The sample’s structure and properties were characterized respectively by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measuring instrument. The relationship between SiO 2 particle size and surface hydrophobicity was explored and the superhydrophobic stability were tested.     Description: The growth factor progranulin (PGRN) has been implicated in embryonic development, tissue repair, tumorigenesis, and inflammation, but its receptors remain unidentified. We report that PGRN bound directly to tumor necrosis factor receptors (TNFRs) and disturbed the TNFalpha-TNFR interaction. PGRN-deficient mice were susceptible to collagen-induced arthritis, and administration of PGRN reversed inflammatory arthritis. Atsttrin, an engineered protein composed of three PGRN fragments, exhibited selective TNFR binding. PGRN and Atsttrin prevented inflammation in multiple arthritis mouse models and inhibited TNFalpha-activated intracellular signaling. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that PGRN is a ligand of TNFR, an antagonist of TNFalpha signaling, and plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory arthritis in mice.     Description: We report a draft sequence for the genome of the domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori), covering 90.9% of all known silkworm genes. Our estimated gene count is 18,510, which exceeds the 13,379 genes reported for Drosophila melanogaster.     Description: Driven by the strong civil aviation strategy for powerful nation, the civil aviation industry has continued to develop rapidly. The pavement of the running and sliding system has also been subjected to a sustained high load, accelerating the destruction of the pavement. In order to ensure the safe and comfortable operation of the aircraft, it is necessary to conduct a quasi-evaluation of the performance of the road surface regularly, which provides routine decision-making for pavement maintenance and repair. In this paper, the ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to evaluate the pavement defects at several selected representative airports in China. GPR is also compared with other detection methods. The result shows that GPR has the advantages of high detection speed, high working efficiency, strong visibility of assessment results and having little impact on the airport’s safe operation, which is suitable for non-stop operation of the airport.

    Description: With an aim to provide guidance for public health swimming in the beach, as well as provide a scientific basis for beach safety management, a continuous 16-day monitoring after the first rainfall and 6-day monitoring after the last rainfall in the swimming season in 2015 was carried out at Fujiazhuang bathing beach in Dalian to evaluate the effects of rainfall on typical fecal sources (enterococci, human specific bacteroides ) and non-fecal bacteria ( staphylococcus aureus ) contamination. The results showed that the concentration of enterococci using culture dependent method and human bacteroides using real-time PCR always fluctuated with six overlap rainfalls, which had a severe impact on fecal bacteria indicators.     Description: Plants regulate photosynthetic light harvesting to maintain balanced energy flux into photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII). Under light conditions favoring PSII excitation, the PSII antenna, light-harvesting complex II (LHCII), is phosphorylated and forms a supercomplex with PSI core and the PSI antenna, light-harvesting complex I (LHCI). Both LHCI and LHCII then transfer excitation energy to the PSI core. We report the structure of maize PSI-LHCI-LHCII solved by cryo–electron microscopy, revealing the recognition site between LHCII and PSI. The PSI subunits PsaN and PsaO are observed at the PSI-LHCI interface and the PSI-LHCII interface, respectively. Each subunit relays excitation to PSI core through a pair of chlorophyll molecules, thus revealing previously unseen paths for energy transfer between the antennas and the PSI core.
