Description: 〈p〉Rho guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) are master regulators of cell signaling, but how they are regulated depending on the cellular context is unclear. We found that the phospholipid phosphatidylserine acts as a developmentally controlled lipid rheostat that tunes Rho GTPase signaling in 〈i〉Arabidopsis〈/i〉. Live superresolution single-molecule imaging revealed that the protein Rho of Plants 6 (ROP6) is stabilized by phosphatidylserine into plasma membrane nanodomains, which are required for auxin signaling. Our experiments also revealed that the plasma membrane phosphatidylserine content varies during plant root development and that the level of phosphatidylserine modulates the quantity of ROP6 nanoclusters induced by auxin and hence downstream signaling, including regulation of endocytosis and gravitropism. Our work shows that variations in phosphatidylserine levels are a physiological process that may be leveraged to regulate small GTPase signaling during development.〈/p〉

Description: Since their origin, human populations have colonized the whole planet, but the demographic processes governing range expansions are mostly unknown. We analyzed the genealogy of more than one million individuals resulting from a range expansion in Quebec between 1686 and 1960 and reconstructed the spatial dynamics of the expansion. We find that a majority of the present Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean population can be traced back to ancestors having lived directly on or close to the wave front. Ancestors located on the front contributed significantly more to the current gene pool than those from the range core, likely due to a 20% larger effective fertility of women on the wave front. This fitness component is heritable on the wave front and not in the core, implying that this life-history trait evolves during range expansions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Moreau, Claudia -- Bherer, Claude -- Vezina, Helene -- Jomphe, Michele -- Labuda, Damian -- Excoffier, Laurent -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Nov 25;334(6059):1148-50. doi: 10.1126/science.1212880. Notes: Linear arrays of 15 nm thick, polycrystalline Co91Fe9 nanoelements have been fabricated using e-beam lithography, collimated sputtering and lift-off. The elements have widths of 0.17 and 0.25 μm, lengths from 0.5 to 4 μm, pointed ends, and center-to-center spacing of 0.5 μm. Characterization by magnetic force microscopy shows that in the virgin state these elements are single-domain and have magnetizations parallel to their long axes. The field at which an element switches its magnetization direction is shown to depend mainly on its width, and only slightly on its length. Fields of about 440 and 680 Oe are needed to switch completely the 0.25 and 0.17 μm structures, respectively. This separation in switching fields is adequate to allow elements of different widths to be switched independently. Also, magnetic force microscopy and SQUID magnetometry analysis show that a capping layer is necessary to protect the films from oxidation. Unprotected films show an altered hysteresis loop and their associated nanostructures are not consistently single-domain. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The diffusion coefficient of lithium in aluminum has been investigated as a function of temperature between 150 and 240 °C by elastic recoil detection analysis. This dependence is found to be well described by the following expression: D =0.37(+1.30−0.28)exp{−[(126.1 ±5.2)kJ/ mol/RT]} cm2/s.

Notes: Abstract The ‘transmissible enteritis’ of Guinea fowl chick, which appears in less than 12 weeks birds, is characterized by a yellowish diarrhea and a general dehydratation, a swelling of caecums, a large mortality. The mycological analysis of food points out that it is not a classical mycotoxicosis. On the other hand, the isolation ofGeotrichum candidum from the intestine of dead animals let presume that this fungus plays a role in the disease. There is no transmission by egg. The dungs, the litters and the drink water can be origin of contamination. Experimental infections with cultures ofGeotrichum are actually unsuccessful.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The mycological examination of nine samples of apples intended for industrial use, shows a predominance of fungal alterations related with postharvest injuries. Among the detected fungi, the possible interferences of Penicillium expansum (patulin producer) and of Fusarium (trichothecenes elaborators) in the etiology of esophageal cancer are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Many contaminated sites contain a variety of toxicants. Risk assessment and the development of water quality criteria therefore require information on the interactive effects among toxicants in such mixtures. Interactions between metals are relatively well studied, but little is known about interactions between metals and hydrocarbons. This study investigated the interaction between phenanthrene and zinc in the sheepshead minnow Cyprinodon variegatus. Interaction studies were performed with 7-day-old minnows in 96-h bioassays with zinc and phenanthrene at a fixed ratio and with varying proportions of zinc and phenanthrene. Mixture toxicity was quantified with the toxic unit, additive index, and excess function methods. All three methods generally indicated an antagonistic interaction between phenanthrene and zinc, though the results also provide some evidence for a synergistic interaction at low toxicant levels or at specific phenanthrene-to-zinc ratios. Short-term uptake experiments were conducted to determine if the strong antagonistic interaction observed when zinc and phenanthrene were present at 50% of their LC50 values was due to effects of zinc and phenanthrene on each other's uptake. Significantly less 65Zn uptake occurred in the presence of phenanthrene than in its absence. In contrast, zinc did not appear to affect the uptake of 14C-phenanthrene.

Notes: Abstract First, it is shown by ESR that the radical CH2=Ċ-CN at low temperature presents an unstable bent structure and at higher temperature a stable linear structure. A theoretical calculation on this radical and on the butatrienyl one is in good agreement with the experimental results.
