Notes: Summary The systemic availability of a new antidepressant, zimelidine, and of its pharmacologically active metabolite, norzimelidine, was studied in six healthy male volunteers. Three single doses of zimelidine (25 mg and 100 mg orally and 25 mg i.v.) and two single doses of norzimelidine (25 mg orally and i. v.) were given to each volunteer allowing at least seven days between administrations. Plasma concentrations of zimelidine and norzimelidine were determined in serial blood samples by HPLC. Following oral zimelidine peak plasma concentrations of the metabolite were attained about 3 h after dosing. Oral administration of norzimelidine itself resulted in a plasma concentration profile for this compound that was similar to that observed after oral zimelidine. Utilising the plasma concentration data following intravenous infusion of each compound, the elimination half-lives for zimelidine and norzimelidine were calculated to be 5.1 h (range 4.3–6.0) and 15.5 h (range 10.6–22.9) respectively. The total body clearances of the 2 compounds were similar at 0.52 l · min−1 (range 0.26–0.70) for zimelidine and 0.56 l · min−1 (range 0.28–0.83) for norzimelidine. The substantially longer elimination half-life of norzimelidine was apparently the result of a larger volume of distribution (9.4 l · kg−1; range 7.8–11.4) for this metabolite, as compared to zimelidine (3.21 · kg−1; range 1.6–4.9). The calculated bioavailability of zimelidine was 26% (range 9.1–39) after the 25 mg oral dose, and 29% (range 14–46) after the 100 mg dose. The bioavailability of norzimelidine was 66% (range 36–91). However, oral administration of zimelidine resulted in as much or more norzimelidine reaching the systemic circulation, as the oral administration of norzimelidine itself. This is important as a large part of the activity of the drug may be due to the metabolite.

Notes: Abstract An I-J-subregion controlled determinant is expressed on Ly-1 inducer and Ly-1,2 acceptor T cells in the feedback suppression circuit. Ly-1 T cells absorb the I-J antibody reactive with the Ly-1,2 acceptor T cell, suggesting that both inducer and acceptor T cells have the same 1-J determinant. Since less than 10 percent of Ly-1 or Ly-1,2 T cells are killed by anti-I-J plus complement treatment, the I-J determinant demarcates functionally distinct subsets of both the Ly-1 and Ly-1,2 T-cell sets. This I-J determinant is not expressed on a detectable number of Ly-1 helper T cells which induce B lymphocytes to produce anti-sheep red cell antibody in tissue culture.

Notes: Abstract A laboratory cadaveric model, developed previously for the study of currently employed external fixation devices used for unstable pelvic fractures was used to evaluate rigidity improvements associated with a number of fixation design innovations. Based on quasistatic shearing displacements measured at the sacro-iliac joint and symphysis pubis disruption sites, otherwise identical anterior frameworks constructed on 5 mm fixation halfpins, rather than upon standard 4 mm halfpins, were able to sustain markedly (58% to 210%) greater loadings. A new and very simple traingular framework was designed and constructed for which the fixation rigidity was found to rival that of much more complex and cumbersome double anterior frames. When used as the posterior component of combined anterior/posterior fixation systems, a new double cobra-type (internal) plate allowed the injury model pelvises to sustain near-physiological load levels. A pair of dynamic compression plates attached across a disrupted symphysis pubis was found to be a biomechanically acceptable substitute for an anterior external fixator.

Notes: Summary This paper uses the concise summary obtained from a two part model of daily rainfall to compare the rainfall climate of eleven places on a north-south transect in West Africa. The number of rainy days is analysed separately from the amounts of rain. Curves are fitted to the probability of rain and these curves are geographically consistent. The mean length of dry spells and of wet spells vary systematically during the year. In the rainy season there is a nearly constant mean interval of about 4 days between the start of successive rainy spells. The amounts of rain are described by gamma distributions. The mean rainfall per rainy day is relatively constant and variation in the probability of rain is therefore the most important component of seasonal variation and of differences between places.

Notes: Summary Male rats were run downhill for 90 minutes (nonexhaustive). Following the exercise, muscle protein degradation was increased, as determined by urinary 3-methylhistidine. However, minimal changes were observed in the relative percentage of the minor myofibrillar proteins and in the protease calcium activated factor in the long head of the triceps brachii muscle (eccentrically exercised) following the exercise bout.

Notes: Summary Mouse liver glutathione S-transferase activity at birth was 1/10 that of adults, and increased steadily with each successive week of age until adult values were reached at 8 weeks. Activity was inducible with phenobarbital; however, the percentage increase in activity was dependent upon substrate. 2 distinct peaks of transferase activity were obtained on CM-cellulose chromatography. The ratios of transferase activity observed for each peak demonstrated that glutathione S-transferase activity in mouse liver is associated with at least 2 distinct proteins with differing substrate specificities.

Notes: Abstract The concentration of PCB, as Aroclor 1254®, accumulated from sandy sediment byNereis virens is directly related to PCB concentration in sediment and to exposure time, and is inversely related to worm size. There was no indication of equilibrium concentrations being attained during 32 days' exposure. Concentration factors at 32 days ranged from 10.8 for 0.6-g worms to 3.8 for 4.7-g worms. There was no obvious excretion of PCB byN. virens during 26 days' post exposure. Accumulation of PCB byCrangon septemspinosa is directly related to PCB concentration in sediment and inversely related to animal size. Concentration factors at 32 days ranged from 3.5 for 0.1-g shrimp to 1.9 for 2.9-g shrimp. Field collectedN. virens ranging in weight from 1.3 to 20.0 g were analyzed for PCB, ΣDDT and dieldrin. Smaller worms had accumulated more per unit weight of each compound than larger worms.
