    Notes: Abstract In a single-blind, randomized, two-way crossover study with 12 healthy male volunteers, 60 μg of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) or placebo was administered by intravenous infusion during a 120-min period. PGE1, 13,14-dihydro-PGE1 (PGE0) and 15-keto-PGE0 plasma concentrations were measured by a highly specific and sensitive GC-MS/MS method. Endogenous PGE1 plasma concentrations ranged between 1.2 and 1.8 pg·ml−1. Endogenous PGE0 and 15-keto-PGE0 plasma concentrations varied from 0.8 to 1.3 pg·ml−1 and from 4.2 to 6.0 pg/ml respectively. During intravenous infusion of PGE1, plasma PGE1 concentrations rose to a level twice as high as during the placebo infusion. In contrast, PGE0 plasma concentrations were 8 times higher during PGE1 infusion than during placebo infusion, and 15-keto-PGE0 plasma concentrations were 20 times higher. The new analytical method has thus been useful to describe the pharmacokinetics of PGE1 and its metabolites PGE0 and 15-keto-PGE0, during and after intravenous infusion of PGE1.

    Notes: Abstract Polyalkylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles were labelled with the fluorescent marker propidium iodide to follow their cellular distribution. Fixation of propidium iodide onto the nanoparticles can be achieved by its addition to the polymerization medium after initiating the polymerization process. However, the charged propidium iodide was found to distort the anionic polymerization process. Therefore, polymerization conditions were optimized with regard to the time of marker addition and marker concentration, loading capacity, and monodispersity of the nanoparticles size distribution.

    Notes: Abstract Copolymer nanoparticles of acrylic acid, acrylic amide, acrylic butylester, and methacrylic methylester with increasing content of acrylic acid were produced and surface-modified by adsorption of nonionic (Poloxamer 407, Poloxamine 908, Antarox CO 990) and ionic (Gafac RE 960) surfactants. The coated particles were characterized with regard to parameters relevant for the in vivo organ distribution: coating layer thickness, charge-reducing effect of the coating layer and surface hydrophobicity. Gafac was found to form highly charged surface layers leading to recognition by the reticuloendothelial system (RES). The hydrophobicity of the coating layers decreased with increasing thickness. The thickest coating layers were found on the most hydrophobic particles possessing least content of acrylic acid (1.9%). These particles coated with the nonionics were regarded as sufficiently hydrophilic to potentially reduce the uptake by the RES in vivo. The properties of coating layers can therefore be optimized by variation of the monomer ratios in copolymers.

    Notes: Deep penetration welding of polymers can be carried out at high speed with relatively low laser power. This results from an efficient coupling CO2 laser radiation to polymers that leads to volume heating. A brief review of energy coupling and heat transfer effects in polymers under CO2 laser welding conditions is given. Some examples of low power (10 to 100 watt) CO2 welding of polypropylene and polyethylene at depths of up to 1.5 cm are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The analytical potential of the combination of solid state NMR and soft ionization mass spectrometry for direct investigations of complex organic matter in soils without chemical pretreatment is demonstrated. The results show that the Oh horizon of a Gleysolic paleosol (±45 Ma) from the Canadian Arctic consists mainly of components of cuticular waxes which include 10-nonacosanol, C15–C36 n-fatty acids, C44–C75 n-alkyl monoesters and C60–C76 diesters. It is likely that these waxes originated from the coniferous and deciduous vegetation which dominated this area when these soils were formed and that the climate was warm and moist.

    Notes: Summary A set of 115 samples with known organic carbon (Corg) concentrations, divided in the sample groups whole soils (n=39), soil particle-size fractions (n=33) and litter materials and humic substances (n=43), was investigated repeatedly (3–6 replicates) by pyrolysis-mass spectrometry using field ionization as a soft ionization mode (Py-FIMS). Statistical evaluation of the results supplied basic information on the reproducibility of Py-FIMS measurements of these complex organic materials, as well as on the influence of Corg concentration on volatilization and total ion intensity (TII). The relative error in measurement for sample weight amounted to 10%, for percentage of residue to 2%, for percentage of volatilized matter to 5% and both for TII/mg sample and TII/mg Corg to 17%. The relative errors in measurement of sample weight, TII/mg sample and TII/mg Corg of the total sample set corresponded with those of each group, however differences were observed for the percentages of residue and volatilized matter. Linear correlation and regression analyses show that larger Corg concentrations result in a significant increase in percentage of volatilized matter and TII/mg sample, whereas percentages of residue were significantly decreased. On the average of all samples, 75.2% of the variation of TII/mg sample was due to Corg concentration and the percentage of volatilized matter. For the total sample set covering a wide range of plant and humus materials, the relative error in measurement of TII/mg sample was independent of Corg concentration, sample weight, percentage of residue and percentage of volatilized matter.

    Notes: Summary A simple and fast determination of trace amounts of commercially used cationic surfactants is described. After extraction from water cationic surfactants are separated by HPLC and detected by conductometry. The detection limit is 3 μg/l for distearyldimethylammonium chloride, 16 μg/l for ditallowimidazolinium methosulphate, and 6 μg/l for dodecylpyridinium chloride.
