    Description: Insulin elicits a spectrum of biological responses by binding to its cell surface receptor. In a screen for small molecules that activate the human insulin receptor tyrosine kinase, a nonpeptidyl fungal metabolite (L-783,281) was identified that acted as an insulin mimetic in several biochemical and cellular assays. The compound was selective for insulin receptor versus insulin-like growth factor I (IGFI) receptor and other receptor tyrosine kinases. Oral administration of L-783,281 to two mouse models of diabetes resulted in significant lowering in blood glucose levels.     Description: Independent domestication of sorghum, rice, and maize involved convergent selection for large seeds, reduced disarticulation of the mature inflorescence, and daylength-insensitive flowering. These similar phenotypes are largely determined by a small number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that correspond closely in the three taxa. The correspondence of these QTLs transcends 65 million years of reproductive isolation.     Description: Patients with human severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) can be divided into those with B lymphocytes (B+ SCID) and those without (B- SCID). Although several genetic causes are known for B+ SCID, the etiology of B- SCID has not been defined. Six of 14 B- SCID patients tested were found to carry a mutation of the recombinase activating gene 1 (RAG-1), RAG-2, or both.     Description: Large-scale synthesis of aligned carbon nanotubes was achieved by using a method based on chemical vapor deposition catalyzed by iron nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous silica. Scanning electron microscope images show that the nanotubes are approximately perpendicular to the surface of the silica and form an aligned array of isolated tubes with spacings between the tubes of about 100 nanometers. The tubes are up to about 50 micrometers long and well graphitized.     Notes: We report the measurement of carrier concentration and mobility of metalorganic chemical vapor deposited GaN thin films on the sapphire substrate by an infrared reflection technique. By fitting with the experimental data we obtain all the parameters of the lattice vibration oscillators and of the plasmon. From the plasmon frequency and the damping constant we have derived the carrier concentration and the electron mobility. The concentration agrees with the Hall data very well while the mobility values are smaller than that of the Hall measurement by a factor of about 0.5. We attribute such mobility lowering to the increase of scattering for the electrons coupling with the incident photons. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous diamond-like carbon (a-DLC:H) films have been prepared by pulsed laser ablation of a polymer target in the presence of hydrogen (H2) gas. The growth rate of these films was found to be highly dependent on the deposition temperature and the amount of H2 gas used during the deposition process. The optical band gap of these a-DLC:H films changed in a wide range (0.25–2.5 eV) with substrate temperature and H2 pressure, and was found to be highly correlated to the ratio of sp3/sp2 in the film. The gap reached a maximum in a temperature range between 100 and 200 °C and had small values at either lower or higher temperatures. With increasing H2 pressure, the band gap increased monotonically and saturated around 0.5 mbar. It was found that the refractive index and the imaginary part of dielectric constant of these a-DLC:H films monotonically increased with decreases in the wavelength of the probing beam. It was also found that these laser derived a-DLC:H films could be made either completely insulating [∼10−11 (Ω cm)−1] or conducting [∼1 (Ω cm)−1] by simply varying the deposition temperature and H2 pressure. Very little photoconduction has been observed in these a-DLC:H films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ball milling of Mo in nitrogen and ammonia gases has been studied. After heating, the formation of an intriguing ternary compound, Fe3Mo3C1−x, was observed as a result of Fe (and C) contamination from the milling apparatus. For a comparison, mechanical alloying of Fe–Mo–C powders with a stoichiometric composition of Fe3Mo3C was also performed and again an Fe–Mo–C alloy was obtained after milling. Thermal analysis shows a single transition peak for the formation of both the Fe3Mo3C phase in the latter case and also for Fe3Mo3C1−x formed as a result of contamination from the mill. The lattice parameter for the Fe3Mo3C1−x phase obtained by Mo-gas reaction is smaller than for the Fe3Mo3C phase obtained by mechanical alloying of stoichiometric Fe–Mo–C powders. It is suggested that, in the Fe3Mo3C1−x phase produced by milling of Mo in gases, a high concentration of C vacancies exists. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
